12k flowering saplings to be planted at central Ridge
New Delhi: Delhi Forest and Wildlife Department plans to beautify the forest stretch along Sardar Patel Marg by planting 12,000 flowering trees and shrubs. Around the Central Ridge near the Sardar Patel Marg boundary, 1,200 each of Amaltas, Queen's Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstroemia speciosa), and Rosy Trumpet Tree (Tabebuia rosea) will be planted, along with approximately 8,400 bougainvillea shrubs.
Saplings, 10–12 feet tall, will be planted during the upcoming monsoon, with flowers expected from next year.
A senior forest official said, "We aim to enhance the forest area along Sardar Patel Marg with native flowering species to improve its visual appeal. A tender has been floated, and plantation will begin in the monsoon."
Earlier attempts to grow Chinar and Cherry blossom trees here failed. These were planted near SP Marg ahead of the G20 summit, anticipating the route would be used by delegates and VIPs, but both species did not survive.
Delhi's ridges include northern, central, south-central, and southern ridge, spanning a total of around 7,777 hectares. The southern ridge is the largest at 6,200 hectares, followed by central ridge (864 ha), south-central ridge (626 ha), and northern ridge (87 ha). TNN

Cracks appear on NH's retaining wall at Valiyaparamba
Kozhikode: Cracks have appeared on the retaining wall of the national highway stretch at Valiyaparamba near Thalappara in Malappuram district. The cracks were formed in the concrete block walls constructed through the paddy field. Locals said a portion of the retaining wall showed slight subsidence. Mastermind behind police attack yet to be nabbed
Ranchi: The mastermind behind the attack on the policemen at Koinara village under the Lapung police station area, some 40 km away from the Ranchi district headquarters, is still absconding. A mob attacked the policemen with sticks and sharp weapons on Tuesday, when they arrived in the village to oversee the law and order situation which was disrupted over a land dispute between two groups. No arrests were made in connection with the incident till filing of this report. Two policemen, including the in-charge of the Lapung police station, Santosh Kumar Yadav are undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Ranchi. Two other personnel were discharged from the hospital on Wednesday. Ranchi (rural) SP Praveen Pushkar said that the mastermind who has Naxalite link and incited the violence is currently on the run. "Police have been trying to trace him," SP said. The situation is under control now, he added. TNN

More rain unlikely, mercury set to rise
New Delhi: Brace for sultry days as the mercury is expected to rise and rain is unlikely from Thursday onwards. The maximum temperature is likely to touch 38-40 degrees Celsius by Friday, and it may rise to around 40-42 degrees Celsius by June 10. The day temperature may cross 40 degrees Celsius by the weekend," an IMD official said. The Met department has predicted that the maximum temperature is expected to stay between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius on Thursday and between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius on Friday. The minimum is also expected to rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius by Friday, according to the forecast. According to the India Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature was recorded at 34.6 degrees Celsius, five degrees below normal. The minimum settled at 24.7 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal. Though IMD has placed a yellow alert for light showers and gusty winds of up to 50 kmph on Wednesday, no rain or strong winds were seen in the city from 8.30am to 5.30pm. TNN
