Ebisu Bloomin' Jazz Garden
It's getting warmer, which means outdoor music festival season is in full swing. Ebisu's Yebisu Garden Place is hosting its second annual outdoor jazz festival for three consecutive days this May, featuring a host of live performances by renowned artists from Japan and abroad.
While many of the scheduled performances are paid, expect to see free shows by domestic artists such as Bossa Nova specialist Lisa Ono and jazz pianist Tadataka Unno, bassist and singer Tendre, as well as the Grace Aimi, Yancy & Zack Auslander trio. Highlights from the list of paid performances include R&B artists Kona Rose with David Bryant, alternative rock band Luby Spark, and experimental soul band Wonk at the Blue Note Place, managed by legendary jazz club Blue Note.
Coinciding with the 130th anniversary of the start of diplomatic relations between Japan and Brazil, the event will also feature a traditional pagode samba party hosted by celebrated former soccer player Ruy Ramos and his daughter Fabiana. The father-daughter duo will be performing on stage as a percussionist and singer, respectively. Standing tickets (¥3,900) are now available to purchase online via Eplus.

Musician Cosmic Crooner to perform at Glasgow's Hug and Pint
Cosmic Crooner has released his new album European Vacation and announced a UK tour for October 2025. Fans can see him perform in The Hug & Pint in Glasgow on October 9. The musician has previously toured with Temples, Timber Timbre, Tempesst and most recently Mattiel, helping him to build a following across Europe. Described as "enigmatic", the artist has also shared a new video for his single In Love. The album is said to be inspired by David Axelrod, Serge Gainsbourg, Marvin Gaye, and the golden age of Bossa Nova. Cosmic Crooner said: "I wanted to make a timeless album. "I love Brazilian music, progressive soul from the '70s and jazz. "I've tried to incorporate my inspirations into this world." The foundation of the album was completed in just four days and recorded live, without a click track. It was produced by Pieter Vonk, with strings arranged by Trey Pollard and Jesse Kotansky. Cosmic Crooner said: "I love the sound of a big orchestra, and Trey was amazing at bringing my dream arrangements to life. "The songs Jesse worked on have less 'big' arrangements, but they're perfect for those songs and I love how Jesse played it all himself." The musician also spoke about his vocals on the album. He said: "I knew that if I called myself Cosmic Crooner I'd have to up my singing game. "I don't take the term 'crooner' too seriously, but the singers I like are usually referred to as crooners: Scott Walker, Frank Sinatra, Roy Orbison." Cosmic Crooner has also directed the videos for European Vacation, a series of 16mm films with interlinked stories. The video for the first single, Never Wear Your Own Merch, was shot in the south of Spain. He said: "I lived there for a year when I was 19. "As soon as I visited the area, it was so beautiful that I thought: One day, I want to shoot a music video here. "I was there listening to David Axelrod and, if I think of a holiday moment, that's where I think about. "I wanted to write music suitable to film there." Pixies: The Night the Zombies Came review – an echo of an echo of past glories
Is there an act that has had a second coming as underwhelming, yet at the same time as long-lasting as that of the Pixies? The astonishing run of albums from 1987's Come On Pilgrim to 1990's Bossanova still stand as one of the cornerstones of modern-day indie rock. Yet the records released over the past decade – of which this is the fifth – have been noteworthy mainly for the homeopathic quantities of excitement contained therein. The Night the Zombies Came doesn't buck the trend. Much of the record recalls the more laidback moments on Bossanova: the odd surf-guitar inflection from Joey Santiago here, more restrained vocals from Black Francis there. None of it is especially awful, but there's such a paucity of memorable songs that it's like an echo of an echo of former glories. Even when some energy is injected, as on You're So Impatient and Oyster Beds, it's more huff-and-puff than blowing anybody's house down. Still, at least humanity's lengthy wait for a song that starts from the perspective of a decapitated chicken has finally been addressed (on Chicken), so there is that at least.
