Nets summer league grades: Tyrese Samuel drops 19 in loss to 76ers

USA Today19-07-2025
The Brooklyn Nets (1-4) went into Friday's Las Vegas Summer League against the Philadelphia 76ers (3-2) looking to come away from the event with more than one win to hang their hat on. Brooklyn came into the contest with some players dealing with injuries so the team decided to get extended looks at other players, but it did not lead to the result they wanted.
The Nets lost to the 76ers 87-83 despite getting a great game out of center Tyrese Samuel, who finished the contest with 19 points and 12 rebounds while shooting 8-of-10 from the field. Samuel wasn't the only one who showed up to play as guard Quincy Olivari had 18 points and two rebounds prior to his injury and forward Grant Nelson had 11 points and four rebounds.
Brooklyn had control of the game in the first quarter, but once Mark Armstrong (23 points) and Judah Mintz (20) got going for the 76ers, the Nets did not have a way to keep up until the end when they finally started making some shots against Philadelphia's zone. With that being said, here are the Nets player grades following Friday's loss to the 76ers:
Caleb Daniels: C+
Daniels drew another start with the rookies not playing in this one, but he wasn't able to recreate the magic he had earlier in the summer league. Daniels had some good looks over the course of the game, but he wasn't able to find the touch necessary to finish plays. To his credit, Daniels did a great job of rebounding the basketball and he showed some skill as a secondary playmaker within the offense.
Quincy Olivari: B-
Olivari did not shoot the ball well in this one as he couldn't find his touch from the outside, but that didn't stop him from making an impact on the offensive end. Olivari remained aggressive with the ball in his hands and as a result, he was able to generate some free-throws and score some points that way. Despite showing some of his passing chops in previous games, Olivari turned the ball over entirely too much against Philadelphia.
Tosan Evbuomwan: C-
From the beginning of this game, it was clear that Evbuomwan did not have his usual touch on the offensive end as he was missing some shots that he makes in his sleep. Evbuomwan, who can usually get himself going driving to the rim and getting two feet in the paint, just wasn't able to finish against the 76ers' defense. Evbuomwan did a good job of making plays for his teammates and he was a solid presence on the glass as well.
Tyrese Samuel: A+
Samuel was the star of this game for the Nets as he seemingly couldn't miss when the ball got to him as he was making shots from inside the paint and from the perimeter as well. Samuel did not play much in the first few games of the summer league for Brooklyn, but he has been making his minutes count over the past two contests. Samuel was a rebounding machine and he had some nice moments creating for his teammates.
Grant Nelson: B
Nelson had a solid game at center for the Nets as he showed his ability to make an impact on the offensive end on the inside and on the perimeter. Nelson hasn't been too aggressive on the offensive end over the course of the summer league, but this was probably his most complete game. While Nelson did a good job of rebounding the ball, he also fouled too much on the defensive end.
Dre Davis: C-
Davis saw some extra minutes in this one with all of the players that were out for various reasons and he showed the good and bad parts of his game. Davis could not get anything going on the offensive end in terms of his shooting, especially from three-point land. Davis did a great job of hustling to get back on defense to block some shots, but that tenacity also came with some extra fouls as well.
TJ Bamba: B
Bamba didn't have his best game shooting the ball, but it was encouraging to see him continue to be aggressive on the offensive end despite his shooting struggles. Bamba has always shown his willingness to give more effort than the average player and that led to him getting some rebounds and steals thanks to his timing and instincts. Bamba is a solid defender in most matchups thanks to his unique blend of size and athleticism.

Kyrie Irving admits he never wanted Steve Nash as a head coach of the Brooklyn Nets: "There were other candidates out there that had championship experience"

Kyrie Irving admits he never wanted Steve Nash as a head coach of the Brooklyn Nets: "There were other candidates out there that had championship experience" originally appeared on Basketball Network. When James Harden joined the Brooklyn Nets in January 2021, a Hall of Fame-caliber lineup formed on paper, featuring Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and Steve Nash as head coach — and it looked terrifying. Three superstars came together to form a big three, with one of the greatest basketball minds in history leading them from the bench. Though he had no head coaching experience, Nash was part of the Golden State Warriors' staff during their championship runs. Kyrie didn't think Nash was the right fit for the Nets On paper, Nash seemed like a perfect fit for this group. He came up under Steve Kerr, his basketball IQ was unquestionable, and he was once a superstar himself — he understood how superstars operate. However, the project quickly fell apart, and from the start, it felt like it may have been too much for the former two-time MVP to handle in his first coaching job. "I already had my own thoughts on how the coaching situation was gonna go. I felt like there were other candidates out there that could have definitely been our head coach that had championship experience," Irving said on Twitch. "I think Steve had championship experience in his own way in his role that he played at Golden State, but as far as being head coach, I had my own thoughts." "He even admitted to me that he had his own reserves on coaching me and I had my reserves on being coached by him. We had already hashed that out, but I'm not gonna sit here and pretend like yeah, it was all easy around everything in Brooklyn." There was never real chemistry in their relationship This is just the latest development in the tension between Irving and Nash. Rumors had circulated that Irving would often oppose the plays Nash drew up during timeouts, completely ignoring his coach's instructions. He also stirred things up with comments like not seeing how the Nets even had a head coach, claiming that both he and KD could take on that role. And while Irving is now choosing his words more carefully and not directly calling Nash out, it was clear there was never real chemistry in their relationship. An anonymous scout told the New York Post that during the one game where the Nets lost to the Indiana Pacers, he watched Irving ignore Nash's play calls and do something else instead, numerous times. "I couldn't believe what I was seeing," the scout said. "Nash would call something, and he'd run the opposite. I've never seen anything like that." Irving may have been a major burden on that team The real reason why Irving, who isn't typically known as a disruptive player, behaved this way toward his coach, who also happens to be a legend of the game, still isn't known. But from today's perspective, it's not hard to conclude that Irving may have been a significant burden on that team despite his talent. At the time, he was constantly in the spotlight for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine and frequently made headlines for off-court topics, including his belief that the Earth is flat. It seemed like his focus during that career stretch was largely elsewhere. And while his opinion that the Nets, given their star-studded roster, needed a proven and experienced head coach instead of a rookie may hold water, he could've looked to the example of his rival Stephen Curry, who also got Steve Kerr as a rookie coach and went on to win four rings together. Either way, Nash hasn't returned to coaching since, while Irving has somewhat calmed down as his career has story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Jul 26, 2025, where it first appeared.

What are the reasons for the Nets to pay Cam Thomas what he wants?

Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas has been getting his first taste of NBA free-agency and based on all of the reports, the experience isn't going well for him. Given that Thomas is a restricted free-agent, Brooklyn has the leverage when it comes to signing him, but there appears to be disagreements over how much Thomas should be paid this summer. Brian Lewis of the New York Post recently reported that the Nets and Thomas are at a standstill within their contract negotiations and it seems that the issue could come down to how much money Brooklyn pays Thomas per season. Lewis made a point to note that Thomas views himself in the same tier with players like Toronto Raptors guard Immanuel Quickley and Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro, two players that are making around $30 million per year. The question at this point of the offseason is whether or not the Nets should pay Thomas what he's asking for, especially at a point in the summer where no other team can currently offer him anything close to what he's asking for. NBA insider Jake Fischer reported recently on a Bleacher Report livestream that Brooklyn has offered Thomas as many as two years on a new contract for the Mid-Level Non-Taxpayer exception or $14.1 million per season. Assuming that the Nets indeed proposed that deal to Thomas, it seems that the reason he remains unsigned is because he either wants more years, more money, or both. During the 2024-25 season, there were a few reports projecting Thomas to get somewhere between $20 million per year and $30 million per year due to how well he played when he was available and what the market could have dictated for him. The Nets and the Utah Jazz are the only teams with cap space, otherwise known as positive cap space for the purpose of this article, but there are plenty of other teams with access to the NTMLE. With Brooklyn able to match any offer sheet that Thomas gets from other teams, it seems that the former LSU Tiger is most likely playing next season with the Nets, but time will tell if it will be on a new contract or on the $5.99 million qualifying offer.

Indiana Fever update Caitlin Clark injury status, availability vs New York Liberty

With the 2025 WNBA All-Star break concluded, the Indiana Fever provided an injury status update to star Caitlin Clark ahead of their Tuesday night game against the New York Liberty from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Clark, who suffered a right groin injury late in the Fever's July 15 victory over the Connecticut Sun, missed Indiana's blowout loss against the Liberty last Wednesday and opted out of All-Star weekend to focus on her recovery. According to coach Stephanie White, the Fever do not anticipate Clark being available when they take the floor in Brooklyn on Tuesday. "I haven't seen C (Clark) since the game last night, but I think she's progressing. I think that we're continuing to address everything that needs to be addressed. She's going to see some doctors and get some more tests done early in the week. "I don't expect her to be available on Tuesday, so we're just going to continue to take it one day at a time and let her get her evaluation early this week. Once we've done that, hopefully we'll have more of a clear mind of what it looks like," White said of Clark's status. With Clark most likely unavailable for Indiana, the team will need to rely heavily on Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston to bear the load on offense and get contributions off the bench. Indiana's Tuesday night clash with New York will tip off at 7 p.m. CT and will be carried on ESPN.
