Body of Chinese climber killed during K2 summit descent retrieved by rescue team
Faizullah Faraq, spokesman for the Gilgit-Baltistan government, said the body of Guan Jing was airlifted by an army helicopter from K2's base camp after a team of mountaineers brought it down.
Jing died Tuesday after being struck by falling rocks during her descent, a day after she had reached the summit with a group of fellow climbers.
Faraq said her body was taken to a hospital in Skardu city and would be sent to Islamabad after coordination with her family and Chinese officials
Karrar Haidri, vice president of the Pakistan Alpine Club, said the body was retrieved after days-long efforts, during which one of the rescuers was injured and airlifted by a helicopter.
K2, which rises 8,611 meters (28,251 feet) above sea level, is considered one of the world's most difficult and dangerous peaks to climb.
Jing's death comes more than two weeks after German mountaineer and Olympic gold medalist Laura Dahlmeier died while attempting another peak in the region.

Pakistan will not restrict mountaineering despite recent deaths of climbers
Pakistan has issued no warnings or restrictions on mountaineering expeditions, an official said Sunday, despite a spate of climbers' deaths. Faizullah Faraq, a spokesman for the government of Gilgit-Baltistan, the northern region home to some of the world's highest mountains, said all climbers were well-aware of the harsh weather and other risks and challenges before their expeditions. "Despite that, they willingly accept these challenges and come here to attempt these summits," he said. Faraq's remarks come after Chinese climber Guan Jing, 37, died last Tuesday after being hit by falling rocks on K2, the world's second-highest peak known for its treacherous slopes and extreme weather conditions. Her body was recovered by rescue teams on Saturday. Jing's death occurred several weeks after German mountaineer and two-time Olympic gold medalist Laura Dahlmeir died while attempting to summit Laila Peak in the Karakoram mountain range. Efforts to retrieve her body were abandoned when Dahlmeier's family informed authorities that she had stated that no one should risk their life to recover her body if she died in any accident. Bodies of foreign climbers who die attempting to summit mountains in Pakistan are typically recovered at the request of their families. But if the family declines a rescue, the remains are left at the spot where the climber died. Faraq said authorities were trying to provide climbers with better infrastructure, rescue facilities, security and a friendly environment. Mountaineering expeditions are the backbone of the local economy, bringing in millions of dollars in direct revenue. A large number of people work on these expeditions from May to September, feeding their families for the whole year with these earnings, he added. Hundreds of climbers try to scale mountains in northern Pakistan every year. Accidents are common because of avalanches and sudden weather changes.

Pakistan leaves out Babar and Rizwan from T20 squad
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan left out Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan for an upcoming triangular series and the Asia Cup as it named a 17-member squad on Sunday for the two T20 tournaments in the United Arab Emirates. Neither batter has featured in a T20 international since playing against South Africa in December 2024 with Pakistan instead giving chances to batters Saim Ayub, Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman, who can score quickly. Head coach Mike Hesson told reporters that Babar was asked to improve 'in some areas' that included his vulnerability against spinners and his strike rate. Babar is due to play for Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League later this year and Hesson said the batter was working hard to be in contention for next year's T20 World Cup. Since Hesson took over as the white-ball coach, Pakistan won two bilateral T20 series against Bangladesh and West Indies, but also lost another to Bangladesh 2-1 in Bangladesh. West Indies also recorded its first bilateral ODI series win against Pakistan in 34 years when it won 2-1, with Babar scoring 47, 0 and 9. 'At the moment, the players that we have, (they) have performed exceptionally well,' Hesson said in reference to Farhan, Ayub and Zaman. 'But certainly a player like Barbar has an opportunity to play in the BBL and start to show that he's improving in those areas in T20s. He's too good a player for us not to consider.' Pakistan, Afghanistan and UAE will compete in the triangular series at Sharjah in between Aug. 29 and Sept. 7 before Dubai and Abu Dhabi host the Asia Cup from Sept. 9 to Sept. 28. Hesson was happy with Pakistan's preparations for the two tournaments by winning six of the nine T20 games under him and was also impressed with the performance of new fast bowler Salman Mirza in Bangladesh — especially in the death overs. Mirza and fellow pace bowler Mohammad Wasim have been included in the squad for both tournaments. 'From a T20 perspective, this side is traveling quite nicely,' Hesson said. 'We've also been able to provide some different opportunities for different players during those tours and that's the only way we're going to create depth. 'Whereas, if we continued to play the same team, all the time, we wouldn't be able to create depth.
