Poland completes negotiations to buy South Korean K2 tanks: Reports

Al Arabiya03-07-2025
Poland has completed negotiations with South Korea's Hyundai Rotem to receive a second batch of K2 tanks and plans to sign a contract, South Korea's defense procurement agency said on Wednesday.
The specific size of the contract will be disclosed later, South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration said in a statement.
On Thursday, Hyundai Rotem said in a regulatory filing the Polish arms procurement agency has confirmed the contract was worth $6.5 billion. It said further details of the deal would be announced in a later filing.
The Yonhap News Agency has said the deal was to supply 180 tanks.
In 2022, Poland and Hyundai Rotem agreed to a supply deal for the first batch, or 180 K2 tanks.
While the first contract focused on Korean-made vehicles that could be quickly supplied as Poland moved swiftly to boost its military amid Russia's war in neighboring Ukraine, the second batch is expected to grant the Korean arms maker a more permanent foothold in Europe.
DAPA said a production facility in Poland would be established, with a large number of K2 tanks to be assembled locally through cooperation between Hyundai Rotem and Polish defense companies.

Mercedes-Benz May Soon Be Powered by BMW Engines

Who would've thought we'd see the day when Mercedes-Benz, the symbol of German luxury, might rely on BMW to keep its cars moving? Yet here we are. Reports suggest that starting in 2027, Mercedes could be fitting its new models with BMW's four-cylinder engines — a move that would have sounded unthinkable just a few years ago. Why Mercedes Needs the Help Mercedes hasn't had the smoothest ride lately. In the second quarter of 2025, its profit margin sank to just 3.2%, and global sales in the first half of the year slid to 900,000 cars — the lowest since 2020. On top of that, the idea of relying on Chinese suppliers for combustion engines has turned into a political headache in key markets like the United States. That's where BMW comes in — yes, the arch-rival. Sometimes even competitors make the most convenient partners. What's on the Table According to Autocar, talks between the two companies are already well advanced. The centerpiece is BMW's 2.0-liter turbocharged B48 engine, a power unit built in Austria and known for its versatility. It can be fitted in different layouts, which gives Mercedes plenty of options for everything from compact cars to mid-size SUVs. There's even discussion about building these engines together in the U.S., which would sidestep any potential tariffs if they were shipped from Europe. A Win-Win Situation For Mercedes, the deal is like hitting two birds with one stone: it gets quick access to Euro 7-compliant engines without burning billions on new ICE development, and it keeps its hybrid and combustion lineups alive well beyond 2027. For BMW, it's an easy revenue boost. Supplying engines to Mercedes not only keeps its Austrian plant humming but also reinforces its reputation as a maker of some of the world's most reliable engines. And let's not forget — BMW has already played this role before, powering brands like Land Rover and Toyota. A Shift in Strategy This engine deal also signals something bigger: Mercedes quietly easing off the full-EV promise. Just a couple of years ago, the company was talking about going 100% electric by 2030. Now, it's looking at 50% by the end of the decade. That's why Mercedes is still pouring €14 billion into developing new combustion and hybrid tech — it's a safety net for the years ahead. What Drivers Can Expect If everything goes through, we might soon see BMW engines inside cars like the Mercedes C-Class, E-Class, GLC, GLB, GLA, CLA, and even the rumored 'baby G-Class.' That means quicker rollout of advanced hybrid options and, hopefully, no compromise on the premium driving feel Mercedes fans expect. But perhaps the most fascinating part is the bigger picture: this collaboration could redefine the legendary Mercedes vs. BMW rivalry. Instead of being just about who builds the better car, it could become a story of two giants knowing when to fight — and when to team up.

UK Targets Iranian Oil Magnate, Four Companies with Asset Freeze

Britain imposed sanctions on one individual and four entities on Thursday under its Iran sanctions regime, saying they are part of a network that supports Tehran's overseas activities, including "destabilization" in Ukraine and Israel. The sanctions include an asset freeze on Iranian oil magnate Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, and on four companies operating in the shipping, petrochemical and financial sectors, the foreign office said in a statement Britain said Tehran relies on revenues from such trading networks to fund its "destabilising activities", including support for proxy groups and threats on UK soil, Reuters reported. "Today, the UK is announcing sanctions against those who operate on behalf of Iran, fuelling its attempts to undermine stability in the Middle East and global security," Minister for the Middle East, Hamish Falconer, said. The United States, which sanctioned Shamkhani last month, said he controls a vast network of container ships and tankers through a complex web of intermediaries that sell Iranian and Russian oil and other goods throughout the world. Some of the companies sanctioned by Britain on Wednesday were cited for acting on behalf of or at the direction of Shamkhani, who is accused of aiding Iran's overseas operations. Shamkhani was also sanctioned by the European Union in July. British lawmakers warned last month that Iran posed a growing and multifaceted threat to Britain, and while it does not yet rival the scale of challenges posed by Russia or China, they said the government was ill prepared to confront it. They said the Iranian threat spanned physical attacks and potential assassinations targeting dissidents and Jewish communities, as well as espionage, offensive cyber operations, and efforts to develop nuclear weapons. Iran has rejected these claims, calling them "unfounded, politically motivated and hostile allegations".

Pakistan gets offers in 200,000 tons sugar tender, traders say

HAMBURG: The lowest price offered in an international tender from Pakistan to buy 200,000 metric tons of sugar on Thursday was believed to be $560 a metric ton cost and freight included (c&f), European traders said in initial assessments. Offers in the tender from the state trading agency Trading Corporation of Pakistan are still being considered and no purchase has yet been reported, they said. The TCP can negotiate for several days in tenders before deciding whether to purchase. The lowest offer was said to have been submitted by trading house Bare for small grade sugar. Bare also offered $580 for medium grade sugar, with a total 187,000 tons offered. Three tender participants all offered 25,000 tons of small grade sugar: Sucden at $579, Dreyfus at $581.50 and Cofco at $592 all per ton c&f. ED&F Man offered 32,000 tons of small grade at $579 a ton c&f and also 27,400 tons of small grade at $569 a ton c&f. Al Khaleej Sugar was believed to have offered 60,000 tons of small grade at $572.30 and 30,000 tons of medium grade at $582.30 a ton c&f. The TCP's tender seeks price offers for fine, small and medium grade sugar, all for arrival in Pakistan by October 31. Pakistan's government has approved plans to import 500,000 tons of sugar to help to maintain price stability after retail sugar prices in the country rose sharply. The TCP bought a total of 105,000 tons in its previous sugar tender reported on August 14. Reports reflect assessments from traders and further estimates of prices and volumes are still possible later.
