Kerala becomes first state to mandate robotics education for all Class 10 students
The integration of robotics into the 10th-grade ICT textbook, specifically the sixth chapter titled 'The World of Robots' in the first volume, will empower students to explore fundamental robotics concepts through engaging activities, an official statement said on Sunday.
These include circuit construction, utilising sensors and actuators, and controlling electronic devices using computer programming, K Anvar Sadath, CEO of KITE and Chairman of the ICT Textbook Committee, said in a statement.
KITE is the technical arm of the General Education Department of the Kerala government.
It has already distributed 29,000 robotic kits to high schools across the state to ensure the effective implementation of this curriculum.
'This ambitious initiative builds upon Kerala's prior success in making Artificial Intelligence (AI) learning accessible to all seventh-grade students, another national first achieved in the previous academic year,' Sadath said.
Demonstrating a continued commitment to future-ready skills, AI learning has now been incorporated into the ICT textbooks for grades 8, 9, and 10 as well.
The practical experience gained from the robotics curriculum piloted for Little KITEs (Kerala's IT club for students) has been instrumental in shaping this comprehensive rollout for all class 10 students, the statement further said.
The initial hands-on activity in the textbook challenges students to utilise components from the provided robotic kits – such as Arduino breadboards, IR sensors, servo motors, and jumper wires – to construct an automated sanitiser dispenser that activates upon detecting a hand, it said.
Progressing further, students will also delve into creating AI-powered smart home automation systems, including face-recognition-enabled smart doors.
To facilitate this, they will utilize the 'Face Detection Built-in Model' within the Pictoblocks software's programming IDE, leveraging webcams on laptops and Arduino kits supplied by KITE to program door-opening mechanisms.
KITE's innovative robotics learning approach is designed to equip students with the skills to address a wide range of practical problems through cutting-edge technologies.
KITE has already conducted the first phase of training on the new tenth-grade ICT textbook for 9,924 teachers.
Sadath said dedicated robotics training for teachers will be organised in July.
Furthermore, KITE will ensure the availability of additional robotic kits, extending support to unaided schools following the state syllabus that may require them.
The ICT textbook is being provided to all students in Malayalam, English, Tamil, and Kannada mediums, the official added in the statement.

Zerodha Unveils WhatsApp-Based Kite Backup For Emergency Trading: How To Use It
Zerodha launched Kite Backup, a WhatsApp-based system for traders to manage positions if Kite's main platforms fail. Zerodha WhatsApp-Based Kite Backup: India's largest stockbroker Zerodha has launched Kite Backup, a WhatsApp-based emergency system that allows traders to square off open positions and cancel pending orders if its primary platforms – Kite web and mobile – ever go down during market hours. Trading platforms are highly complex, with multiple systems linked to exchanges, data centres, and cloud providers. Despite several layers of redundancy, a rare technical glitch at any point can disrupt trading. To provide an additional safety net, Zerodha has created this fully independent backup channel. Unlike the regular Kite systems that run on Amazon AWS and are protected by Cloudflare, the new WhatsApp-based setup is hosted on Microsoft Azure and connects directly to multiple order management systems (OMS) in physical data centres. It does not rely on Kite's primary infrastructure, ensuring that even if AWS or Cloudflare face outages, users can still exit positions. Limitations The Kite Backup system over WhatsApp is designed to be a last resort in case all primary trading platforms become unavailable. It is NOT designed to be a trading or investment platform. The WhatsApp Flow offers only a rudimentary interface that permits very few interactions. You can view holdings, margins, open orders and positions. Open orders and positions can be squared off. New orders or any other advanced features are not available. The backup system offers redundancy over Kite's trading systems and infrastructure, such as Amazon AWS and Cloudflare, which Kite depends on. However, it does not offer redundancy over the core OMS (Order Management Systems) located in physical data centres. OMS systems have different redundancy measures. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Zerodha's Nithin Kamath launches Kite Backup for trading: What it is, how to use the service — 10 things to know
Zerodha founder and CEO Nithin Kamath on August 14 announced a new emergency trading model for the company's trading platform Kite. The billionaire start-up founder noted that this move comes as 'trading platforms are ridiculously complex'. 'One hiccup anywhere from exchange connections to cloud servers can create an issue. Over the years, we've built tons of safeguards and redundancies, but we're still paranoid,' he noted. The new model uses WhatsApp and in case of a disaster scenario, where the Kite web and app both become inaccessible during market hours, aims to allow customers to cancel orders and exit positions. Kamath shared a video, outlining the same. In the video shared by Nithin Kamath, the company announced the features of Kite Backup, which it has called 'an additional safeguard' for clients. Kite Backup is completely independent infrastructure that customers can use to manage existing orders through WhatsApp. According to Nithin Kamath, 'We've built a new emergency trading mode using WhatsApp. In case of a disaster scenario, which we hope never happens, and the Kite web and mobile both become inaccessible during market hours, this backup mode will allow you to cancel orders and exit positions. It runs on a completely separate infrastructure and is designed to be independent of Kite.' How does the existing Kite infrastructure (app and website) function? According to the company, you can you place an order on Kite web or app and go through the Cloudflare security screening, then to Kite's AWS cloud servers, and then to the physical backend servers that connect directly to the stock exchange. The system has three availability zones, backup regions and multiple connection paths to maintain high availability. For one, its built on Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure, with no shared components, no shared AWS, and no shared Cloudflare with Kite. It also uses WhatsApp as the interface, which has its own infrastructure completely independent of Zerodha's trading systems. There is an important limitation, the company warned. If the backed servers are down this WhatsApp option won't work, as Kite backup only replaces Kite's front-end. Both systems ultimately connect to the same physical backend infra that communicate with the exchange.

Generative AI set to improve banking operations in India by 46%: RBI Report
New Delhi [India], August 14 (ANI): Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to improve banking operations in India by up to 46 per cent, according to a report by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The central bank noted that AI can help financial institutions better understand customer behaviour, improve efficiency, and offer more personalised services at scale. It stated, "GenAI is poised to improve banking operations in India by up to 46 per cent". The report said AI is increasingly being adopted across the financial services sector. This adoption is being driven by multiple needs, including enhancing customer experience, improving employee productivity, increasing revenue, reducing operational costs, ensuring regulatory compliance, and enabling the creation of new and innovative products. As per report, Generative AI, in particular, is playing a major role by using advanced analytics to help institutions understand customer behaviour, manage risks more effectively, and control costs. AI-powered alternative credit scoring models are also helping expand credit access to people who are underserved by the traditional banking system. RBI also stated that in India, where millions of people still do not have access to formal banking, AI can help assess the creditworthiness of potential borrowers using non-traditional data sources. These may include information such as utility bill payments, mobile usage patterns, GST filings, or e-commerce transactions. Such technology can help bring "thin-file" or "new-to-credit" customers into the formal financial system. The report also pointed out that AI chatbots are transforming customer service by handling routine queries around the clock, providing faster resolutions, and freeing up human staff for more complex tasks. Globally, the adoption of AI in financial services has been growing rapidly. The RBI report said that AI is expected to directly contribute to revenue growth for the industry in the coming years. The generative AI segment alone is projected to exceed ₹ 1.02 lakh crore (about USD 12 billion) by 2033, growing at an annual rate of 28-34 per cent. The findings highlighted that with proper use, AI can make banking in India more efficient, inclusive, and customer-friendly while driving strong growth for the sector. (ANI)
