Sophie Winkleman calls for AI to be kept out of classrooms
Artificial intelligence should be kept out of classrooms, a royal family member and actor has said.
Sophie Winkleman, styled as Lady Frederick Windsor, also suggested schools should bring back blackboards and chalk instead of relying on smartboards as she spoke at a centre-right political gathering in east London.
The actress, known for playing Big Suze in Channel 4 comedy Peep Show, has previously leant to her support to a ban on under-16s from having smartphones, and was a supporter of strengthening the Online Safety Act.
She told the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship (ARC) conference at London's Excel Centre that there is talk of 'AI being pumped into our classrooms with children's data being harvested to better improve the AI'.
'Why?' she asked, adding: 'The fact that AI will soon outperform humans in many areas means schools should be backing away from the neurological junk food of digital learning, alert to the fact that it's counterproductive to learn anyway from an instantly ageing system, and teaching their pupils the deeply human skills, which AI will have a harder time replacing.'
She listed 'empathy, concentration, eloquent and humorous discussion, and creative expression' among the skills AI could not teach.
The actor continued to question the use of AI in schools, adding: 'Why is digitally transporting a child to the Egyptian pyramids better than that child imagining it?
'This kind of jazz-hands immersion as an engagement tool doesn't work.
'It negates the need to imagine, rendering the pupil a passive rather than an active learner.'
Elsewhere, as she criticised the rollout of educational technology, Winkleman said there was 'no consensus' that interactive smartboards, used across in classrooms across the country, are 'safe'.
As she signalled she wanted to see a return to analogue learning, she said smartboards are 'simply not as effective as a teacher writing out what is in that second being explained on the black and whiteboard'.
'Yet we seem to be marching into a world where screens are replacing books,' she added.

Holly Willoughby's plans unveiled as she's left without upcoming TV show
Holly Willoughby has been an ITV staple for the last few decades but it looks like she won't be on our screens in the near future Holly Willoughby's career plans for the future have reportedly been unveiled as she's been left without an upcoming TV show. The star has been a staple on our screens for years but it seems that she hasn't got any upcoming projects for us to look forward to. The 44-year-old is now at a point in her career where she hasn't got a programme lined-up for the first time in 21 years. This comes as her usual presenting gig on Dancing On Ice has come to an end as the show has been axed. Holly's other job hosting Bear Hunt with Bear Grylls also won't be happening again as that's been axed as well. She has also chosen to leave You Bet! which means Stephen Mulhern will be hosting the show alone. It has been reported that Holly's husband Dan Baldwin is working on a reboot of Record Breakers which means Holly could be in with a chance of a presenting job. The Sun reported that a source said it would make "perfect sense" for Holly to be up for the role. They said: "Record Breakers is likely to be a prime time hit and it would make perfect sense for Holly to take the reins. She has worked alongside Dan before and the pair know what it takes to make great telly." Holly has also been in amongst a few names that could be hosting the reboot of Cilla Black's Blind Date. Other celebs that could be up include Claudia Winkleman and Davina McCall. Another show Holly is being looked at for is a new Channel 4 programme where new undiscovered singers are found. Holly first returned back to TV last year after taking an 18 month break. It has also been reported that ITV are keen to keep Holly as she recently met with Katie Rawcliffe, director of entertainment and daytime about future opportunities. An insider revealed: "Holly always intended to lock in new presenting roles for ITV, which has been her home for so long. She didn't have anything confirmed earlier this year just due to the way the cards had fallen, but there are a string of exciting projects on the table and 2025 is looking good for Holly. "Holly is looking to the future and this week's meeting was a big part of that. It won't be a return to daytime programming but new entertainment formats." The meeting coincided with a documentary about Holly's kidnapping airing. Holly declined to participate in Channel 5's documentary, The Plot To Kill Holly Willoughby, which told the story of the plot by obsessed security guard Gavin Plumb to kidnap, rape and murder her. The traumatic experience is what led her to step down from her role on ITV1's This Morning and take a break from television altogether.

On Friday's episode, Exeter-based teenage sweethearts Lauren and Tom were the newest additions to the group, wanting to feel more confident in having an open relationship. After getting engaged three months ago, it was Tom who was struggling most with the idea, admitting he has found himself struggling to perform in a multiple-person sexual scenario. He's also suffering from self-esteem issues after being diagnosed with Sudden Death Syndrome, a heart condition that has meant he can no longer go to the gym, putting on weight as a result. Advertisement The bisexual bride-to-be admitted to Effy that she didn't 'feel complete' with either men or women, and had a hard time accepting being with just one person for the rest of her life. Setting up a barn dance mixer, the couple were told to invite others into their room for foreplay, with Tom taking the lead in a situation that doesn't necessarily lead to sex or his need to perform. However, when three couples say yes, Tom admits he 'felt petrified and sick' as he's tied and blindfolded to a bed. With Lauren watching on excitedly from the sidelines with a glass of wine, Tom lets the women take control as they start caressing, kissing and touching him. Advertisement One purred to him: 'You're getting worshipped, you're getting all the attention.' Sharing his fears, Tom said: 'I definitely want to make Lauren happy, I will try anything. To jump this hurdle this early, in my head, I can't perform. I just freeze. Overwhelmed husband wipes away tears after partner romps with another woman in Open House 'Once I'm in that rut, I can't get out of the rut.' As the episode came to an end, it seems the events of the night take a toll on Tom, who is heard vomiting in the bathroom.
