Kedah sees RM20.38b in realised investments

The Sun3 days ago

ALOR SETAR: The Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER), through collaboration with the Kedah state government and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), has realised investments totalling RM20.38 billion in 2024, up from RM11.6 billion recorded the previous year.
NCER chief executive Datuk Mohamad Haris Kader Sultan said this positive momentum has continued into this year, with RM9.11 billion in realised investments recorded as of May 31, creating nearly 2,000 jobs.
'This strong performance reflects investors' and industry players' confidence in Kedah's long-term prospects, and in the northern region as a whole.
'NCER will continue to play a key role while strengthening its cooperation with the state government and relevant agencies to ensure that the realisation of investments in Kedah is enhanced further and meets the standards expected by investors,' he said at the NCER Aidiladha Get-Together event here today.
Prior to the event, the NCER presented its investment performance to Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor during the Kedah State Steering Committee Meeting.
He was also given updates on strategic projects such as the Kedah Rubber City and the Kedah Science and Technology Park, as well as plans to boost Kedah's tourism sector.
These include the implementation of the Integrated Economic and Community Centre (iCON), upgrades to tourism facilities in Mong Gajah and Tasik Pedu, and the development of Dataran Bukit Kayu Hitam.
'The iCON project is a continuation of NCER's entrepreneurship development programme, empowerNCER.
'Previously, entrepreneurs received training and support to start their businesses — now they are being provided with physical business premises to help accelerate their growth,' said Mohamad Haris.
He added that the iCON Yan development is fully completed and will begin operations soon, while iCON Baling has reached 90 per cent completion.
'Demand for business space at both locations has been very encouraging due to rental rates being significantly lower than market value,' he said.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Sanusi said the state government is grateful and fully supports NCER's efforts to develop the iCON projects in Kedah, calling it a meaningful initiative to bridge the urban–rural development gap by unlocking the potential of less-developed areas.
'I hope NCER will continue to play its role in supporting the Kedah state government's socio-economic development efforts.
'I am confident there is still considerable potential in Kedah to be tapped, particularly in the investment, tourism, and agriculture sectors,' he said.

Sabah records RM10.9 billion in investments in Q1 2025, ranks third nationally

Phoong speaking at the press conference. KOTA KINABALU (June 13): Sabah recorded a total of RM10.9 billion in approved investments in the first quarter of this year, surpassing the state's total investment figure for the entire year of 2024. According to the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), the investment performance from January to March places Sabah third nationally, behind Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. State Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe said Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) was the main contributor, accounting for RM6.6 billion or 61 percent of the total, while Domestic Direct Investment (DDI) amounted to RM4.29 billion or 39 percent. The manufacturing sector was the top performer, recording RM7.3 billion in investments — the highest among all states for this quarter. Of this, RM6.59 billion or 91.3 percent came from foreign investors, with the remaining RM711 million or 9.7 percent from domestic sources. The services sector followed with RM2.83 billion, while the primary sector attracted RM757.1 million. Phoong said the figures reflected continued investor confidence in Sabah's economic growth potential and its conducive business ecosystem. 'Despite global economic uncertainties and geopolitical pressures, Sabah remains a competitive investment destination trusted by both foreign and domestic investors,' he said at a press conference at Wisma Kewangan today. He added that the success was due to investor-friendly policies and the state government's strong commitment to stimulating industrial development. 'The state government is committed to strengthening the investment ecosystem and welcoming more investors to achieve sustainable and inclusive economic development for Sabah,' he said.

Malaysia remains attractive investment destination

MALAYSIA continues to draw strong investor interest despite global headwinds. The Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) said that the country has secured RM89.8 billion in approved investments for the first quarter of 2025. This marks a steady 3.7 per cent year-on-year increase, and is set to generate over 33,300 new employment opportunities for Malaysians. Last year, Malaysia recorded RM378.5 billion in approved investments, the highest in the nation's history. According to MIDA, foreign investments dominated the investment landscape for Q1 of 2025, contributing RM60.4 billion or 67.3 per cent of total investments, highlighting Malaysia's position as a top-tier investment destination. REMAINING RESILIENT Although Malaysia cannot escape shifts in the global economy, the country can prepare and remain resilient. Economist Dr Geoffrey Williams said national stability — reflected in stable prices, consistent growth and predictable policies — is key to maintaining business and household confidence. He added that such stability, supported by social cohesion and clear policies, underpins Malaysia's economic resilience and competitiveness. Universiti Sains Malaysia political analyst Professor Datuk Dr Sivamurugan Pandian said that stability builds trust and confidence, especially among investors and in terms of attracting foreign direct investment. "Without stability, it sends various signals to investors, as though the environment is uncertain and trust in the government is eroding, even if much of it is sentiment or perception," the analyst added. He said that the end result always becomes a benchmark or indicator of the government's strength. "Political rhetoric, when backed by implementation, delivery systems, structures or trusted institutions that produce solid results, will attract investors, even more so if the policy is investor-friendly, with a flexible approach and mechanism," he explained.

M'sia secures RM90bil approved investments in 1Q

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has secured RM89.8bil in approved investments for the first quarter of financial year 2025 (1Q25), a steady 3.7% year-on-year increase despite a challenging global economic backdrop. In a statement yesterday, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) said these investments, spread across 1,556 projects in manufacturing, services, and primary sectors, are set to generate over 33,300 new employment opportunities for Malaysians. 'The results reflect continued investor confidence in the country's clear policies and long-term fundamentals, bucking the trend of cautious international capital flows due to geopolitical and macroeconomic volatility, and the intensifying global competition for fresh investments. 'Foreign investments dominated the investment landscape, contributing RM60.4bil or 67.3% of total investments, while domestic investments accounted for RM29.4bil or 32.7%,' it said. Besides job creation, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz said the increase in the Managerial, Technical, and Supervisory index to 46.3% from 44.2% in the same quarter last year reflects the country's success in creating higher-skilled, better-paying jobs. 'With a better integrated Asean economy, which we are working hard on as Asean chair, we are also paving the way for Malaysia's continued positioning as a manufacturing and services hub to this fast-growing 680-million strong region,' he said. He said the investment environment in 2025 is expected to remain challenging due to continued geopolitical and macroeconomic headwinds from the US-China trade war. 'Nonetheless, although major markets' protectionist policies and supply chain frictions continue to weigh in on companies' investment decisions, Malaysia's clear policies should be able to attract more investments from Asia's growing economy, which is expected to expand to about 42% of global gross domestic product by 2040,' he said. Besides bringing in good jobs and business opportunities, Mida chief executive officer Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid said the projects secured by Mida for 1Q25 supported the national effort to build a more diversified and resilient economy. 'To remain a choice location for high-performing companies, we will strengthen our local ecosystem as enablers and prepare our workforce to seize new job and leadership opportunities.' — Bernama
