German Energy Firms Urge Berlin to Cut Gas Storage Goal to 80%

Bloomberg25-02-2025

German utilities are pushing authorities to lower the country's gas storage target for next winter to 80%, a move that could help ease Europe's market tensions after inventories were depleted faster than usual this season.
Energy lobby group BDEW spoke to economy ministry officials 'in favor of reducing this storage target from 90% to 80%,' said Carsten Poppinga, chief commercial officer of the utility Uniper SE, at a press conference in Essen Tuesday. 'We support it as Uniper and as a member of the BDEW.'

Trump 'very disappointed' by Musk as row explodes into public

US President Donald Trump says he was "very surprised" and "disappointed" with former ally Elon Musk's criticisms of his centrepiece budget bill. "Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will anymore," Trump told reporters in the White House on Thursday. It was the president's most direct criticism yet of Musk's lobbying efforts against the proposals to cut taxes and slash government spending - a plan that has drawn criticism from Musk and some Republicans. In response, Musk doubled down on X and accused the president of "Such ingratitude", adding: "Without me, Trump would have lost the election". Musk left his post at the Department of Government Efficiency last week after 129 days on the job, and Trump presented him with a with a golden key during a congratulatory news conference on 30 May. But in the days since, he has repeatedly criticised Trump's budget bill currently working its way through Congress, calling it a "disgusting abomination" and posting "Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong." The bill passed the House with the backing of most Republicans, with a handful of representatives from Trump's party and all Democrats opposed. Speaking to reporters during a news conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Thursday, Trump said: "We are doing things in that bill that are unbelievable. "I'm very disappointed because Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than almost anybody sitting here," he said. "All of a sudden he had a problem." "He hasn't said bad about my personally, but I'm sure that will be next." Put in charge of radically slashing government spending, Musk initiated mass sackings and wholesale elimination of departments such as the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Doge claims to have saved $180bn, although that number has been disputed, and is well short of Musk's initial aim to cut spending by up to $2 trillion.

Musk says Trump would have lost election without him

Tech billionaire Elon Musk on Thursday said President Trump would have lost the 2024 presidential race if it were not for him, escalating a feud that erupted earlier that day between the two former allies. 'Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate,' Musk said on X. 'Such ingratitude,' he added. Musk spent millions of dollars backing Trump's election in 2024 and appeared alongside the president on the campaign trail during its final weeks. He then led the Department of Government Efficiency with the goal of cost-cutting efforts and overhauling the federal government; his last day in the administration was on Friday. Musk's comments came amid an influx of posts on his social media platform X, in which he called for the Trump-backed 'big, beautiful bill' to be killed in Congress. The Tesla CEO, who was a near-constant presence at the side of the president until last week, continued to share old posts on X from Trump talking about the debt and the need for a balanced budget. The president had moments before said in the Oval Office that he was 'very surprised' and 'disappointed' by Musk's harsh criticism of the legislation and said he was uncertain about the future of their relationship. 'I've always liked Elon. And so I was very surprised. You saw the words he had for me, and he hasn't said anything about me that's bad. I'd rather have him criticize me than the bill. Because the bill is incredible,' Trump said during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. 'Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will any more,' Trump added. Musk responded on X after Trump's remarks, repeating his assertion that a bill cannot be 'both big and beautiful.' Musk first railed against the 'big, beautiful bill' earlier this week, calling it 'an abomination' and 'pork-filled' due to its effects on federal deficits. 'In November next year, we fire all politicians who betrayed the American people,' he wrote in a separate post, while sharing another that highlighted criticisms of Republican lawmakers.

Trump Says He's ‘Very Disappointed' With Musk Over Criticism of GOP Megabill

President Donald Trump said on June 5 he is 'very disappointed' with Elon Musk and is not sure if he will continue to have a great relationship with the Tesla head. 'He was upset because we took the EV mandate, which was a lot of money for electric vehicles ... and they want us to pay billions of dollars in subsidy,' Trump said in the Oval Office during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
