What to know about online age verification laws

The Supreme Court has upheld a Texas law aimed at blocking children under 18 from seeing online pornography by requiring websites to verify the ages of all visitors. Many states have passed similar age verification laws in an attempt to restrict access to adult material from minors, but digital rights groups have raised questions about such laws' effects on free speech and whether verifying ages by accessing sensitive data could violate people's privacy.
What is the Texas law?
The law requires websites hosting pornographic material to verify the ages of users in hopes of stopping those under 18 from visiting. Adults would need to supply websites with a government-issued ID or use third-party age-verification services. The law carries fines of up to $10,000 per violation — fined against the website — that could be raised to up to $250,000 per violation by a minor.
Texas has argued that technology has improved significantly in the last 20 years, allowing online platforms to easily check users' ages with a quick picture. Those requirements are more like ID checks at brick-and-mortar adult stores that were upheld by the Supreme Court in the 1960s, the state said.
However, internet service providers, search engines and news sites are exempt from the law.
How do sites verify ages?
It's already illegal to show children pornography under federal law, however it's rarely enforced. But various measures already exist to verify a person's age online. Someone could upload a government ID or consent to the use facial recognition software to prove they are the age they say they are.
Websites and social media companies such as Instagram parent company Meta have argued that age verification should be done by the companies that run app stores, such as Apple and Google, and not individual apps or websites.
Can people get around verification?
Critics, such as Pornhub have argued that age-verification laws can be easily circumvented with well-known tools such as virtual private networks (VPNs) that reroute requests to visit websites across various public networks.
Questions have also been raised about enforcement, with Pornhub claiming those efforts would drive traffic to less-known sites that don't comply with the law and have fewer safety protocols.
Who opposes such laws?
Though heralded by social conservatives, age verification laws have been condemned by adult websites who argue they're part of a larger anti-sex political movement.
They've also garnered opposition from groups that advocate for digital privacy and free speech, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation. The group has argued that it is impossible to ensure websites don't retain user data, regardless of whether age verification laws require they delete it.
Samir Jain, vice president of policy at the nonprofit Center for Democracy & Technology, said the court's decision on age verification "does far more than uphold an incidental burden on adults' speech. It overturns decades of precedent and has the potential to upend access to First Amendment-protected speech on the internet for everyone, children and adults alike.'
'Age verification requirements still raise serious privacy and free expression concerns,' Jain added. 'If states are to go forward with these burdensome laws, age verification tools must be accurate and limit collection, sharing, and retention of personal information, particularly sensitive information like birthdate and biometric data.'

TNB Tech Minute: Trump Halts Canada Trade Talks Over New Tax on American Tech Companies - Tech News Briefing

Full Transcript This transcript was prepared by a transcription service. This version may not be in its final form and may be updated. Victoria Craig: Here's your TNB Tech Minute for Friday, June 27th. I'm Victoria Craig for the Wall Street Journal. President Trump today terminated all trade talks with Canada, partly over a new digital services tax on American tech companies. The president said the US's northern neighbor has been, quote, a very difficult country to trade with. Trade negotiations have been taking place between the two sides for months. Meanwhile, the Trump administration is also considering executive orders aimed at increasing power generation to meet AI demand, according to people familiar with the matter. That could include giving federal land to tech companies to build data centers and expediting grid connections and permitting for advanced power generation projects. Elsewhere, in a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court upheld a Texas law requiring certain websites that host sexual content to verify viewers' ages. The Texas law requires websites that contain more than one-third sexual material harmful to minors to use what it calls reasonable age verification methods to determine those visitors are at least 18 years old. Violations are punished with a monetary fine. Search engines and major social media networks are exempt from the state's law. And finally, New York's governor Kathy Hochul signed into law legislation requiring local governments in the state to report cyber attacks on their networks within 72 hours. It also compels organizations to report any ransom payments made to hackers within 24 hours, and mandates security awareness training for New York government employees. The state's new law is in line with pending federal regulations being hammered out by the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. How Long Will It Take Your iPhone to Fully Charge? iOS 26 Will Tell You

PCMag editors select and review products independently. If you buy through affiliate links, we may earn commissions, which help support our testing. We got a first look at iOS 26 on Monday. And since all the attention has been on the Liquid Glass UI, some interesting updates to Battery Settings went largely unnoticed. As MacRumors reports, Apple redesigned the Battery Settings page in iOS 26 to offer improved battery usage statistics and a new feature to extend battery life. Now, when you enter Battery Settings, you are no longer greeted with options to enable Battery Percentage and Low Power Mode. You'll instead see your current battery percentage at the top. If you have plugged in your iPhone to charge, the same menu will show the time required to charge your battery to full. Based on the images shared by MacRumors, the screen auto-lock feature has also shifted from Display & Brightness to Battery. Next are battery usage statistics. In a move away from iOS 18, Apple will now display weekly numbers instead of 24-hour and 10-day numbers. At first glance, the chart looks similar to what you see on Instagram. You can also tap on each of the previous seven days to see how much battery was consumed each day, MacRumors says. The daily stat will show when you charged your iPhone and for how long. Apple has retained the Battery Health section, which displays information about your charge cycles, maximum battery capacity, and optimized charging limit. However, it has introduced a 'Power Mode' section, which houses the Low Power Mode setting previously located on the front page and a new Adaptive Power Mode. When enabled, Adaptive Power Mode will let your iPhone make subtle performance adjustments to extend battery life, such as reducing screen brightness or slowing down some activities. Android's Adaptive Battery feature pretty much does the same thing. All of iOS 26's features will be made available to developers this week. If you are eager to check out the features, you can install a public beta next month or wait for a stable release this fall.
