PDRM's elite UTK in high demand

The Sun12-06-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police's (PDRM) elite Special Actions Unit (UTK) remains one of the most sought-after tactical forces in the country, particularly for VIP escort and protection duties, as well as counter-terrorism operations.
According to Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department deputy director (Operations), DCP M.V. Sri Kumar, UTK has not only retained its combat readiness but continues to evolve in line with current security challenges.
'UTK operatives are high-value assets due to their involvement in covert and high-risk missions.
'The vacancies in the unit are never fully filled because the demand for UTK services remains exceptionally high due to their expertise and training, with requests coming from corporate agencies and prominent individuals both locally and internationally,' he told a press conference after the UTK Beret Award Ceremony and the closing of the Basic Close Protection Security Course Series 1/2025 at Bukit Aman today.
Sri Kumar said that despite the unit currently having 365 operatives, there are still around 40 vacancies, and new recruitment takes place once or twice a year, with only 15 to 18 per cent of candidates successfully completing the rigorous selection process.
In the latest intake, only 36 out of 250 candidates managed to complete the final phase - the Basic Close Protection Security Course Series 1/2025, which ran from May 13 to May 31.
'This proves that only the best of the best are selected. However, completing basic training doesn't mark the end of their journey. They must still undergo advanced modules such as explosives training, sniper operations, airborne training and other mission-specific specialisations,' Sri Kumar said.
He said that UTK training covers a wide range of disciplines, including martial arts, combat medicine, fieldcraft, firearms proficiency, methods of entry, close-quarter battle, fighting in built-up areas, and final operational simulations, all of which are designed to push recruits to their physical and mental limits.
Sri Kumar, who personally served in UTK from 1992 to 2019, expressed pride in the unit's progress over the years.
He also announced that UTK is expected to relocate to its new headquarters in Semenyih next year, with construction currently 70 per cent completed.
'Once it's ready, the unit will have its own dedicated facility for training and operations, instead of relying on police facilities nationwide,' he said.

Anwar Announces Initial RM100,000 Allocation For RXZ Members 7.0 Programme

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- The MADANI government will allocate an initial RM100,000 to support the RXZ Members 7.0 2025 Programme, which will be held on Aug 23 at the Gong Badak Motor Circuit in Terengganu. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said further discussions on additional support will be held with the organisers next week. He said the MADANI government recognises the role and contributions of the motorcycling community as a catalyst for unity, a builder of camaraderie, and a key contributor to local economic development through various high-impact activities. 'I express my full support for the organisation of the RXZ Members 7.0 2025 Programme. This programme serves as a key platform to bring together motorcycle enthusiasts and the motorcycling community from across the country, while elevating the potential of the motorcycling industry to greater heights,' he said in a statement today. To ensure smooth operations and safety throughout the programme, he said the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has been instructed to provide the necessary assistance and security control. Anwar also reminded participants and organisers to observe traffic rules, act responsibly, and fully cooperate with the authorities to ensure smooth operations and safety throughout the event. 'In the spirit of National Month, I also call on all participants to fly the Jalur Gemilang as a symbol of pride and love for the country. 'May this programme not only serve as a positive motorcycling platform but also as a medium to strengthen national unity and the spirit of patriotism among Malaysians,' he said. The Prime Minister added that the government will continue to support community initiatives that deliver shared benefits, strengthen unity, and foster a positive, safe and progressive motorcycling culture for the nation's prosperity.

Police hunt for RM2.3m fraud suspect as national anti-scam hotline goes 24/7

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is actively tracking down a man believed to be the mastermind behind a preference shares investment scam, which has resulted in losses amounting to RM2,319,300. Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the suspect, identified as Mohd Ezman Zamani, 39, was last seen in Rawang, Selangor. Efforts are underway to locate him to assist in investigations under Section 420 of the Penal Code for fraud. He said a total of 279 police reports related to the case have been lodged with the department since 2023. Initial investigations found that the suspect had no prior criminal record, which allowed him to travel abroad freely before he was believed to have returned to Malaysia. 'Based on our investigation, victims were lured into the investment scheme after attending webinars organised by the company involved. They were promised dividend returns of up to 18 per cent per annum, or 1.5 per cent monthly, for each investment,' he said. 'At the beginning, investors did receive the promised returns. However, over time, various excuses were given, and the payments eventually stopped,' he told reporters during a press conference at Menara KPJ here today. He urged members of the public who have information about the suspect or his whereabouts to contact the investigating officers – ASP Mohd Fikri Najib Ismail at 013-983 9854 or Insp Noor Azamin Noor Azahari at 011-6558 0848. Commenting on the role of the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC), Rusdi said the 997 hotline now operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, an upgrade from its previous operating hours of 8am to 8pm. 'Since switching to 24-hour operations up to August 3, the NSRC has received 10,038 calls – 7,254 during the day and 2,514 at night – averaging 358 calls per day. Of these, 51 per cent were fraud-related reports, while the rest were general inquiries or other types of complaints,' he said. Rusdi added that total financial losses reported from January to July this year amounted to RM193 million. Of that amount, only RM12 million was successfully frozen, thanks to cooperation between the police and financial institutions through Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM). 'The remainder is believed to have been laundered through the layering process and transferred elsewhere. The frozen funds will be seized under legal provisions such as Section 116D of the Penal Code and returned to the victims, subject to investigation outcomes and regulations,' he explained. He added that the Semak Mule portal, which allows the public to verify bank accounts, phone numbers, and companies linked to scams, has recorded 35,828,901 searches since its launch on Jan 1, 2015. So far, 272,250 bank accounts, 216,242 phone numbers, and 14,160 companies have been blacklisted. 'We also encourage the public to practise a 'cooling-off period' – taking a few days before committing to large payments or follow-up investments. The CCID has also recommended that BNM consider extending this cooling-off period in appropriate cases to protect consumers better,' he said. — Bernama
