
UAE ministers hail election of Shaikha Al Nowais as UN Tourism Secretary-General as a historic milestone in global tourism leadership
Several UAE ministers hailed the election of Emirati H.E. Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais as Secretary-General of UN Tourism as a historic and commendable achievement for the country on both the regional and global stage. This accomplishment reflects the UAE's leading position in tourism and the success of its strategic vision to support international efforts in developing a sustainable and responsible tourism sector that drives economic and social development for communities around the world.
H.E. Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the UAE Tourism Council, said: 'Thanks to the guidance of our wise leadership, the UAE today celebrates a new historic milestone in its tourism sector: the election of the UAE's candidate, H.E. Shaikha Al Nowais, as Secretary-General of UN Tourism for the 2026–2029 term. This achievement reflects the UAE's pioneering and influential role in leading global efforts toward sustainable tourism development, in close cooperation with international decision-makers and organizations across the global tourism landscape. It also reaffirms the success of the UAE's strategic vision in strengthening openness to the world and building robust international partnerships that support its aspirations as a premier tourism destination, both regionally and globally.'
H.E. Bin Touq added: 'We are proud to have earned the trust of the international community in our national capabilities, as reflected in the election of Shaikha Al Nowais – the first Emirati and Arab young woman – to the position of UN Tourism Secretary-General. This milestone highlights the competence of our young national talent and their ability to gain international confidence in leading high-level roles within specialized sectors such as tourism. It also reaffirms the prominent status that Arab women have achieved on both regional and global stages.'
H.E. also commended her extensive experience and capabilities in representing the UAE at the highest international levels, as well as her comprehensive vision for strengthening global cooperation to achieve sustainable and responsible tourism development. Her leadership is expected to elevate the tourism sector to new heights of progress and prosperity while contributing meaningfully to the implementation of UN Tourism projects and initiatives.
H.E. pointed out that the UAE's tourism sector achieved exceptional growth in 2024, driven by the launch of several key national initiatives designed to promote tourism within the country and attract international visitors. Notable developments included the fifth season of the 'World's Coolest Winter' campaign, the inauguration of the National Tourism Charter, and the adoption of the International Code for the Protection of Tourists—implemented in collaboration with UN Tourism as a guiding framework. These initiatives collectively support the objectives of the National Tourism Strategy 2031, which aims to position the UAE as the world's leading tourism brand by the next decade.
Her Excellency Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, emphasized that the election of Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais as Secretary-General of UN Tourism represents a significant milestone for the UAE and a proud achievement for Emirati women. Her Excellency added: 'Her appointment as the first woman to assume this position demonstrates the international community's confidence in her capabilities and highlights the UAE's leading role in advancing sustainable development globally.'
Her Excellency noted that Shaikha's distinguished career in the private sector will bring a fresh perspective to UN Tourism, with a focus on delivering tangible results and enhancing the organization's operational efficiency for the benefit of the global tourism industry.

His Excellency added: 'The election of H.E. Shaikha Al Nowais to this prestigious international position reflects not only her competence and professional excellence but also the international community's confidence in the UAE and its standing as a trusted partner in advancing sustainable development globally. It further reaffirms the esteemed position our nation has earned both regionally and internationally.'
Underscoring the significance of the historic milestone, H.E. Omar Obaid Al Hassan Al Shamsi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted that the election of the first Emirati woman by the UN World Tourism Organization demonstrates the continuous support and empowerment provided to Emirati women by the UAE's wise leadership. His Excellency further affirmed that the UAE's continued collaboration with the Organization and its member states has yielded tangible results.
The Undersecretary expressed his confidence that Shaikha Al Nowais, with her robust expertise in tourism and hospitality, would redefine the future path of the industry's development.

Philippines, a top wellness haven for Mideast travellers
Medical and wellness tourism, anchored on the provision and delivery of holistic approaches against chronic diseases, have improved in the Philippines, according to a Florida-based non-profit research organisation. According to the Philippines' Department of Tourism (DoT), in a consequent email interview, initiatives such as overseas presence of the tropical country as a prime medical and wellness tourism destination shall continue. For the first time, it was in April 2024, when the DoT led a public-private delegation, consisting of hospital-dental-wellness facilities and health tourism facilitator for the 'health sales mission' to the UAE (Abu Dhabi and Dubai) and Saudi Arabia (Riyadh). DoT-Office of Product and Market Development director Dr Paulo Benito Tugbang, physician/nurse/midwife, who used to be responsible for the Department of Health-Medical Travel and Wellness Tourism Programme as well as former Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases member, then said that the purpose was to encourage Middle East travel trade professionals consider the medical and wellness offerings of the Philippines, inasmuch as Filipino healthcare workers have been admired for their dedication and commitment. Again, with the purpose of capturing the Arab Market, known for their 'culture of medical travel,' DoT partnered with the Dubai-based Agora Group management firm for the Philippine participation at the June 2023 '1st International Health and Wellness Tourism Congress in Dusseldorf, Germany. This was followed by the October 2024 Philippine-hosting of the second edition of the international event in Taguig City, Metro Manila. Moreover, DoT signed a five-year deal with Thailand, internationally recognised for its medical tourism portfolio in January 2025, covering the areas of tourism cooperation, exchange of best practices, and human resources development. It participated in the May 2024 International Wellness Tourism Expo in Tokyo, Japan. It also had embarked on other 'strategic activities' in Singapore and Malaysia 'with potential industry partners' so that the Philippines would be in 'the radar of regional and international community.' These, as encapsulated in the National Tourism Development Plan 2022-2028 of the Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Administration, shall be the continuous enhancement of healthcare accessibility, promotion of sustainable tourism practices, and delivery of world-class experiences, for the locals and foreign visitors alike. It was a fortnight back when Gulf Today received a press release concerning 'The Global Wellness Economy: The Philippines.' The assessment revealed that 'the country's wellness market' with 11 sectors responsible for the delivery of products and services for one's health and wellness had expanded 21 per cent from $35.8 billion to $43.3 billion between 2019 and 2023. The press release quoted chairperson and chief executive officer Susie Ellis, of the Global Wellness Institute (GWI), into the awareness and education campaign for the necessary lifestyle changes against non-communicable diseases prevalent worldwide: 'The Philippines has a thriving wellness economy, and we are thrilled that its DoT has continued their partnership with us for this deep dive into the data that really showcase where the growth and potential lies.' 'Blessed with natural wonders, the Philippines is an ideal destination for nature-based wellness and relaxation, and the authentic Filipino wellness offerings mean that the country has something truly unique to share with the world,' Ellis also said. In the country assessment and compared with 217 countries and territories, GWI had quantified, that from 2022 to 2023 alone, six of 11 health and wellness economy sectors in the Philippines posted double digit annual growth rates relative to the global market size served. From 10.2 % in the mental wellness: services, therapies, resources to 61.4 % in wellness tourism: enriching travel for personal well-being. In between were the sectors of public health, prevention and preventive medicine (13.3 %), wellness real estate/health and wellness living spaces (14.0 %), thermal/mineral springs (15.3 %) and spas (19.2 %). Overall, GWI concluded that in terms of health and wellness tourism in 2023, the Philippines ranked eighth among 45 in the Asia-Pacific Region, and 23rd of 218 worldwide: 'The wellness industry is a major contributor to the Philippines' overall economy contributing 9.9 % to the gross domestic product in 2023; 12th worldwide.'

Sharjah and China strengthen cooperation and partnership
Sharjah Asset Management, the investment arm of the Government of Sharjah, has concluded a strategic visit to the People's Republic of China. The visit aimed to strengthen international cooperation and expand partnership opportunities between the two countries in the areas of research and development, knowledge exchange, and the exploration of promising opportunities in new sectors. This initiative is part of the broader efforts to enhance bilateral relations between the UAE and China and contribute to driving sustainable development in the Emirate of Sharjah. During the visit, Sharjah Asset Management signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with (CICC), in the presence of Sheikh Saud Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Deputy Chairman of Sharjah Asset Management; Omar Al Mulla, CEO Ossol Investment; Saeed Sharar, CEO Ossol investments; along with a group of CEOs and directors from Sharjah Asset Management, and a delegation representing the Bank of China. Sheikh Saud Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, stated:'This agreement marks a new starting point for a fruitful collaboration with CICC. This partnership will open new horizons for research, investment, innovation, and the exchange of expertise and knowledge between both parties. It will also pave the way for meaningful achievements across key sectors such as finance, technology, and sustainable development, ultimately contributing to long-term economic progress.' A spokesperson from (CICC) affirmed that the partnership with Sharjah Asset Management reflects the company's commitment to strengthening Acooperation between China and the UAE, and to exploring new opportunities that this partnership offers—particularly in the fields of research and development. 'By leveraging our mutual strengths, we can address challenges and seize opportunities within our respective markets, while expanding our reach across regional and international markets,' the spokesperson stated. The Memorandum of Understanding outlines a joint commitment to collaborate on innovative research projects aimed at delivering practical and sustainable solutions that benefit both the Emirati and Chinese economies. It further seeks to enhance growth opportunities in vital sectors such as technology, financial services, environmental sustainability, and sustainable investment strategies. The MoU establishes a solid framework for joint research initiatives designed to foster innovative solutions and drive long-term, sustainable growth. The Memorandum of Understanding is expected to result in a series of joint initiatives, including the organization of specialized workshops and seminars, as well as the implementation of applied research projects that align with the strategic priorities of both parties. The focus will be on sustainable investment practices and innovative solutions that generate long-term economic benefits. This partnership reflects the shared vision of both sides to enhance international cooperation, achieve sustainable economic growth, and build strong strategic relationships.
