Fantasy basketball ‘All-Winners' picks, plus Stephon Castle rising, Paul George falling

New York Times12-03-2025

The regular season isn't over yet, but countless fantasy basketball teams have fallen by the wayside already.
Conversely, all fantasy teams currently looking strong and have a good chance to win their leagues are worth closer examination. If we were to examine the strongest fantasy teams across all leagues, we would find many of the same players appearing over and over.

While fantasy player raters can be useful, I find them often overrated. What really matters is which players have the greatest impact on winning.
With that in mind, I've analyzed dozens and dozens of top teams (my own and my competitors) for both Roto and Best Ball scoring formats. For the players who I think have had the greatest impact on winning, I'm giving them 'All-Winners' status.
Similarly, Yahoo has an 'MVPs' section, showing which players appear most often on the Top 500 Public League teams. But some of their data doesn't sit right with me. For example, for both Roto and Head-to-Head leagues, Yahoo's data shows Brook Lopez being a bigger winner than Amen Thompson, Michael Porter Jr. and Ivica Zubac. I'm seeing something different.
So here are my All-Winners teams, with one month left in the regular season.
Remarkably, there are three Knicks (with Jalen Brunson an honorable mention), three Nuggets (with Jamal Murray an honorable mention), two Cavaliers (with Evan Mobley an honorable mention), two Clippers (with Norman Powell an honorable mention), and two Thunder players listed, meaning five NBA teams have accounted for 12 of my 20 All-Winners picks. As far as head coaches go, I suppose Tom Thibodeau and Michael Malone also deserve some serious recognition.
Now, let's take a look at some players who are rising and falling.
After scoring just 14.5 points on 45% FG over his first 20 games of the season, Bane is now averaging a robust 21.0 points on 49% FG, 7.1 rebounds and 6.2 assists over his past 21 games.
Bridges is coming home like a freight train, with 33.0 points and 8.6 boards over his past five games. Let's hope Brandon Miller is taking notes.

Some friends of mine went to Monday's Warriors game and asked me what they should be watching for. I told them to keep an eye on Clingan, and he responded with a beefy 15 points, 9 boards, 6 assists and 4 blocks.
Castle has averaged 17.2 points and 3.7 assists over his past 10 games, and he could have even more upside if De'Aaron Fox has pinky surgery soon.
Is New Orleans starting to let Zion run loose? He's only played 32+ minutes four times all season, but it's happened twice in the past week. He dropped another triple-double on Tuesday, dishing out a season-best 12 assists while making all six of his freebies.
Averaging 25.7 points on 55% FG in March, this is the Grimes Knicks fans were hoping to see after his solid 2022-23 season.
After a long layoff, Clowney has found his shooting stroke this week. In just 40 minutes of action, he has scored a combined 31 points on 6-of-14 shooting from deep over his past two games.
Getting major minutes again with LeBron James and Rui Hachimura out, Knecht scored 19 points on 8-of-18 shooting on Monday.
Now that's more like it! After a poor spot start last Friday, McBride scored 21 points with 7 assists and 4 triples on Monday. He'll continue to be worthy of starting for as long as Jalen Brunson is out.
Getting extra run due to Amen Thompson's injury, Eason is showing he is capable of producing big games too.
A lesser version of Grimes, Walker has averaged 17.7 points, 4.3 assists and 3.3 treys over his past three games.
Adebayo has found his offensive groove ever since Kel'el Ware became a starter. He has averaged 22.9 points on 56% FG since the All-Star break.
Although his scoring is still up and down, George blocked five shots last Monday and has rejected 16 shots over his past eight games.
He hasn't been as prolific as last season, but Hauser exploded for 33 points and 9 treys on Monday, with more spot starts possibly on the horizon.
After 31 straight games in street clothes, he's finally back in action on Thursday!
George was dropped in just one of my leagues last weekend, but when I saw the drop, I didn't even think about wanting to add him. That's not a good sign if you're still holding onto him.
Ball has shot a brutal 33% FG since the All-Star break while also sitting out games. Charlotte, will you please just shut him down already?
Fox has averaged just 16.9 points on 42% FG over his past 10 games, and he's considering having the aforementioned surgery soon.
Green has been averaging just 12.5 ppg over his past four games, and now Fred VanVleet is back to cut into his usage rate.
He's shooting just 34% from deep since the All-Star break, and Cleveland can afford to give him plenty of rest down the stretch.
He's been playing through a finger injury, and it's showing in his poor shooting — 42% FG and 24% 3P over his past nine games. He's questionable for Wednesday's game, and Toronto is starting to tank hard.
Sochan was supposed to step up in Victor Wembanyama's absence, but his minutes have been limited instead. Nursing a calf injury, he may sit out Wednesday's game.
Gordon aggravated his calf injury last Sunday, and Denver will be extra cautious with him as they prepare for a playoff run.
Wagner apparently remembered he's a terrible 3-point shooter, making just 10-of-44 treys since the All-Star break. After two straight terrible seasons from deep, it might be time to adjust his shooting mechanics.
Just 1-of-14 shooting from deep over his past four games — let's hope Holmgren snaps out of his funk soon.
Maxey will miss his fifth game in a row on Wednesday, and his status moving forward looks quite iffy.
He should be thriving with all of Philly's stars injured, but perhaps Yabusele has hit the brick wall.
Porzingis revealed, 'I have been dealing with some viral illness that we haven't been able to fully identify yet.' That's not very encouraging, and Boston will likely ease him back into things.
The Wizards haven't shut Poole down completely, but 24.5 mpg over his past two games suggests they won't be asking him to play heavy minutes the rest of the way.

Retooling The Houston Rockets With Two Blockbuster Trades For Giannis Antetokounmpo And Kevin Durant

Retooling The Houston Rockets With Two Blockbuster Trades For Giannis Antetokounmpo And Kevin Durant originally appeared on Fadeaway World. The Houston Rockets have emerged as a formidable force in the NBA, finishing the 2024–25 regular season with a 52–30 record, securing second place in the Western Conference. Under the guidance of head coach Ime Udoka, who has revitalized the team since his arrival, the Rockets have demonstrated significant progress. Advertisement However, their postseason journey was cut short with a seven-game first-round loss to the Golden State Warriors. This outcome highlighted the need for a true superstar to complement their existing core and elevate the team to championship contention. In pursuit of this goal, the Rockets are reportedly targeting two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and 15-time All-Star Kevin Durant. According to reports, Houston has maintained interest in acquiring Antetokounmpo, while the Phoenix Suns have lowered their asking price for Durant, making a potential trade more feasible. The Rockets aim to build a new "Big Three" by adding these superstars alongside rising star Amen Thompson, who is considered untouchable in trade discussions. Let's dive into how the team can acquire both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant in blockbuster back-to-back deals. Rockets Acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo in Franchise-Defining Move Jan 12, 2025; New York, New York, USA; Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (34) reacts during the first quarter against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-Imagn ImagesMandatory Credit: Brad Penner-Imagn Images Proposed Trade Details Houston Rockets Receive: Giannis Antetokounmpo Milwaukee Bucks Receive: Alperen Sengun, Jalen Green, 2025 No. 10 Overall Pick, 2025 No. 59 Overall Pick Acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo would be a transformative move for the Rockets. The two-time MVP and perennial All-NBA selection would bring elite defense, unparalleled athleticism, and a championship pedigree to Houston. His ability to dominate both ends of the floor would provide the Rockets with the superstar presence needed to compete at the highest level. Advertisement The cost of acquiring Antetokounmpo is significant, involving the departure of promising young talents Alperen Sengun (19.1 PPG, 10.3 RPG) and Jalen Green (21.0 PPG, 4.6 RPG), along with valuable draft picks. However, the opportunity to pair Giannis with Amen Thompson and potentially Kevin Durant could create a championship-caliber core that justifies the investment. Giannis would finally become the franchise star and best Rockets player since Hakeem Olajuwon, dominating both ends of the floor similar to the all-time great center. Udoka will absolutely love making The Greek Freak the offensive and defensive hub, since the two-time MVP posted 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game on a struggling Bucks team. For the Bucks, this trade offers a chance to retool with young, dynamic players and draft assets, providing a foundation for future success. Sengun and Green have shown considerable potential, and the additional picks could facilitate further roster development. Kevin Durant Joins The Rockets In Team-Friendly Deal Mar 24, 2025; Phoenix, Arizona, USA; Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant (35) reacts against the Milwaukee Bucks at Footprint Center. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images© Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images Proposed Trade Details Houston Rockets Receive: Kevin Durant Phoenix Suns Receive: Jabari Smith Jr., Cam Whitmore, Reed Sheppard, 2031 First-Round Pick (HOU), 2031 Second-Round Pick (HOU) Adding Kevin Durant (26.6 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 4.2 APG on 43.0% 3-PT FG) to the roster would infuse the Rockets with veteran leadership and elite scoring ability. Durant's experience and versatility make him an ideal fit alongside Giannis and Thompson, potentially forming one of the most formidable trios in the league. Advertisement Since Giannis dominates inside and Amen Thompson is best on the fast break, Durant would be a perfect perimeter shooter to take this team over the top. Even as he approaches 37 years old, Durant can drop 25 points in his sleep and can be the closer the Rockets desperately need. Of course, the trade would involve parting with promising young players and future draft picks, but the immediate upgrade in talent and experience could propel the Rockets into serious title contention. Durant's presence would also serve as a valuable mentor to Thompson, fostering growth and development. For the Suns, this trade provides an opportunity to acquire young, high-upside players and future draft capital, aligning with a potential rebuilding strategy. The inclusion of Jabari Smith Jr., Cam Whitmore, and Reed Sheppard offers Phoenix a chance to develop a new core for the future. Since the price for Durant has been lowered, they would accept bringing back the young players. Rockets Assemble a Championship-Caliber Starting Lineup New Starting Lineup: Fred VanVleet, Dillon Brooks, Amen Thompson, Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo This lineup combines veteran savvy with youthful exuberance, creating a balanced and dynamic team capable of competing with the NBA's elite. Fred VanVleet (14.1 PPG, 5.6 APG) provides steady leadership at point guard, while Dillon Brooks adds defensive tenacity on the wing (14.0 PPG, 3.7 RPG). Amen Thompson's athleticism and playmaking complement the scoring prowess of Durant and the all-around dominance of Giannis. Advertisement Under the guidance of Coach Ime Udoka, this ensemble has the potential to execute a versatile and potent game plan, adapting to various opponents and situations. The combination of offensive firepower and defensive dominance positions the Rockets as legitimate championship contenders. The Rockets have the assets to go all-in for two of the greatest players of their generation, and there isn't a better time than now. Three Unique Trade Packages The Knicks Can Offer For Kevin Durant

Three Unique Trade Packages The Knicks Can Offer For Kevin Durant originally appeared on Fadeaway World. The NBA offseason has already begun for 28 of the NBA's 30 teams, and things are expected to get busy when the Finals conclude later this month. For the Knicks, this summer offers a chance to build on their 2025 Finals run and make improvements that will maximize their title odds. Advertisement While the free agent market is limited, the Knicks (like many teams) will likely consider their trade options to add another star next to Jalen Brunson. Their resources are somewhat limited, but they have enough to get involved in negotiations for several big-name players, like Kevin Durant of the Phoenix Suns. A recent report reveals the Knicks tried to trade for the 2x champion at February's deadline. "There's going to be some level of change for this Knicks roster," said Shams Charania. "On Kevin Durant, I will say this: There was mutual interest between Kevin Durant and the Knicks at the deadline. The Knicks made an offer for Durant, but there was no trade." Following a disappointing season, the Suns are on the verge of a major overhaul, and Durant's place on the team is no longer guaranteed. At 36 years old, his timeline doesn't line up with Devin Booker's, and franchise owner Mat Ishbia is more inclined to trade him than run it back with the team that finished 36 games in the West. As a big market team that's looking for a star, the Knicks would be an ideal landing spot for Durant, and it's no surprise that he has an interest in joining one of the NBA's most popular and notorious franchises. The question is, what would a potential trade look like? Here are three potential packages that could work for Durant. Trade Package No. 1 Proposed Trade Details Knicks Receive: Kevin Durant, 2026 second-round pick, 2031 second-round pick (via Rockets) Suns Receive: Karl-Anthony Towns With this deal, the Suns and Knicks would do a straight one-to-one swap between Durant and Towns (besides a few second-round picks to sweeten the deal). Since their contracts are similar in structure, the trade could happen without any extra steps, simplifying the process for both teams. Advertisement On New York's end, losing Towns would be tough, especially given all that they gave up (Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, a future first-round pick) to acquire him last summer. With averages of 24.4 points, 12.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game this season, he fulfilled his role, but critics are split on whether he's the right fit for this particular group. If the Knicks lose faith in Towns, what better way to unload his contract than in a deal for a proven winner and champion like Kevin Durant? Meanwhile, the Suns would get to pair Devin Booker with his fellow Kentucky star, Karl-Anthony Towns, to form an effective two-man tandem. Trade Package No. 2 Proposed Trade Details Knicks Receive: Kevin Durant Suns Receive: Mikal Bridges, Mitchell Robinson, Miles McBride For any other rebuilding team, they'd want young players and draft picks to build up their future. With Devin Booker on the team, however, the Suns intend to stay competitive, and that means finding a trade that will help them win now. Advertisement The Knicks will not give up Jalen Brunson in a deal, but they could offer a package of players that will help the Suns replenish some of their depth. For Kevin, a deal that includes Mikal Bridges, Mitchell Robinson, and Miles McBride could get the job done, and it's one of the few Durant trades that match up financially. As a premier two-way swingman, the Suns would be ecstatic to have Bridges back, and he might help them regain their status and prestige in the West. Along with defensive bug man Mitchell Robinson and Miles McBride, the Suns would have a much deeper rotation with greater defensive versatility than they ever had with Durant. Trade Package No. 3 Proposed Trade Details Knicks Receive: Kevin Durant Suns Receive: OG Anunoby, Miles McBride, 2026 first-round pick (via Wizards) The Knicks only have one first-round pick to trade, but they won't be needing it anytime soon as a team devoted to winning now. If they use the pick and package it in a deal with OG Anunoby and Miles McBride, it might just be enticing enough for the Suns to accept. Advertisement More than anything, Phoenix wants to find a younger player who can make life easier for Devin Booker. As a defensive-minded forward with shooting and rebounding abilities, Anunoby can certainly fill that role for the Suns, and he fits their timeline at 27 years old. The best part of this deal for the Knicks is that they get to add Durant without giving up Bridges or Karl-Anthony Towns. While they'd lose some depth and draft capital in the deal, it might be worth the sacrifice if they build a borderline superteam next season with three All-Star-level players on the roster. With so many variables, it's impossible to say for sure how things will play out this summer, but the Knicks are sure to do something after an encouraging playoff run. With Jalen Brunson, they have a point guard they can trust and a closer to secure wins in tight games. But to reach another level of greatness, the Knicks will need a bucket-getter like Kevin Durant to carry them where they haven't been in over 50 years. NBA Insider Says Kevin Durant To Knicks Trade Will Be "Complicated" Amid Major Giannis Antetokounmpo Update

NBA Insider Says Kevin Durant To Knicks Trade Will Be "Complicated" Amid Major Giannis Antetokounmpo Update originally appeared on Fadeaway World. After the NBA Playoffs ended for the Bucks, an ESPN report sparked multiple rumors that Giannis Antetokounmpo is expected to be open to considering a trade from the Bucks. Now, another ESPN employee, Brian Windhorst, who is also an NBA insider, puts an end to all the rumors revolving around the Greek superstar in Milwaukee. Advertisement Windhorst appeared on the most recent segment of the 'Get Up' show, where he dropped a massive update on the Bucks superstar's near future. The cast of the 'Get Up' show on ESPN deliberated upon the influence of a Giannis Antetokounmpo or a Kevin Durant trade on the Knicks if they choose to move for either of these players. Windhorst jumped in to quickly drop a massive update on the potential Knicks trade for both superstars. 'There's not going to be a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade in the short-term future. The league has come to terms with the realization that the Bucks are going to keep him and Giannis is not going to ask for a trade. I can't speak to what might happen in August. They can't pin any coaching decision on Giannis Antetokounmpo and they probably shouldn't plan to do it on Kevin Durant either, because I don't think they're in the best position to trade for him. I think you should remove those two options, remove those two as any indications on how they might approach their [head coach hiring].' 'I am saying Giannis Antetokounmpo is not getting traded before the Knicks are hiring a coach. So you can't pin the coach to what you may do when a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade [happens] and I think a Kevin Durant trade is going to be very complicated for the Knicks. I do not think that you can make your decision based on the acquisition of one of these star players,' Windhorst further added. ' What Does This Mean For Giannis Antetokounmpo And Kevin Durant? While the Knicks were rumored to be among the mix to trade for Kevin Durant or Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, Windhorst believes that either of those trades could be messy for New York, and one of them will likely not happen at all [Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Knicks]. While the Knicks can trade for Kevin Durant, Windhorst discourages it as he feels they may have to give up too much to get him. Advertisement The Antetokounmpo update makes it clear that one of the biggest pieces of news we will hear first after the end of this season is where Kevin Durant will land next. Multiple reports have suggested that Durant is essentially standing on top of a sinking ship in the Suns and will look to jump ship as soon as he gets the green light. Some sources even claimed that a trade for him may have already been agreed in principle. With Antetokounmpo now presumably locked into the Bucks for the near future, Durant will likely be the biggest name in the trade market this season. But for the Knicks, bringing Durant on board could be a complicated task. They first need to resolve their head coaching role vacancy before entering the trade market for a superstar.
