Australia scientists closer to Hendra virus vaccine thanks to nanobodies from Chilean alpaca names Pedro

An unlikely hero has emerged in the fight against the "absolutely terrifying" Hendra virus, which has again reared its head in Southeast Queensland, killing a horse for the first time in three years.
Hendra — named after the Brisbane suburb that saw its first outbreak in 1994 — is highly lethal to horses and humans.
The hero, 12,000 kilometres away, is Pedro, an eight-year-old Chilean alpaca living in South America.
"His story is quite unique," said Dr Ariel Isaacs, an infectious diseases virologist at the University of Queensland, who used the alpaca in his latest Hendra research breakthrough.
"Pedro was gifted by a travelling Tibetan Buddhist master to the Universidad Austral de Chile when he came to visit their facility a few years ago," he said.
Dr Isaacs' and Pedro's worlds collided as a matter of scientific serendipity.
The researcher first collaborated with the Chilean university during the pandemic, while working on a therapy for COVID-19.
"Nanobodies are very specialised antibodies that can neutralise some viruses with very high potency," Dr Isaacs said.
Camelids, including alpacas and llamas, are some of the only species worldwide that have nanobodies.
"If you introduce a part of the virus into an alpaca, it will produce an immune response — and then it well develop nanobodies against that target. And the Chileans had isolated a nanobody that worked against COVID," he said.
The outcome exceeded expectations.
"We were optimistic that this would work but it was even better than we can have predicted," Professor Daniel Watterson, Dr Isaacs' colleague at the University of Queensland, told 7.30.
Professor Watterson oversees a team including Dr Isaacs which makes vaccines and therapies for emerging deadly viruses with pandemic potential.
Professor Watterson said that once Pedro started making nanobodies "we isolated a particular one that had a really high affinity and ability to protect against the virus in-vitro".
"Then we're able to test that in animal models and prove that protects against infection."
Dr Isaacs described it as a "eureka moment", and the Chilean collaborators named the nanobody 'DS90', with the finer details published in the revered Nature Structural and Molecular Biology journal.
Dr Isaacs said with it, they now have the foundation to produce a powerful therapy.
"What we want to do is turn it into a therapeutic treatment that we could eventually give to a human who might be infected by these viruses," he said.
"And so I'm optimistic and I'm hopeful that funding comes through and we're able to take this into the clinic.
"That would be really amazing for me as an individual, and amazing for the community, and for the lab and our collaborators, and for anybody who's affected by these diseases."
The University of Queenland's infectious disease experts are concerned the Henipaviruses will mutate and spillover.
"Nipah virus, for example, is something that is now emerging across Asia, India and Bangladesh in particular," Professor Watterson told 7.30.
There have been cases of possible human-to-human transmissions and "that's where you're seeing potential for really explosive outbreaks", he warned.
There have been 68 Hendra outbreaks resulting in 110 horse deaths since its discovery in 1994, including one in Southeast Queensland last week — the case of a horse that wasn't vaccinated.
The virus is carried by flying foxes and shed in their excrement, and commonly contracted by horses in contaminated pastures, feed or water.
"It is currently estimated that 70 to 80 per cent of bats are seropositive for Hendra virus, and that means that sometime in their lifetime they've carried the virus," Dr Isaacs told 7.30.
"That's the point of concern for us, because it means that it's still circulating within bat populations, and then that means it can still transmit to horses and the horses can transmit to people — and that can cause severe disease.
Dr Peter Reid was the first veterinarian to treat horses carrying Hendra, before anyone knew what it was, back in September 1994.
He described it as an "absolutely catastrophic, horrifying experience".
"It's always traumatic coming out and doing an interview again," Dr Reid told 7.30.
"But I can understand the interest, and if it has the benefit of reminding people how horrendous it was and the ways to stop it happening, that's what I'm all for."
Dr Reid had been called to Williams Avenue in Hendra to attend Victory Lodge, the Brisbane stables of his client and friend, racehorse trainer Vic Rail.
Several of Mr Rail's horses had fallen ill and they couldn't figure out why.
"There were a lot of sick horses and a lot of dying horses I had to put out of their misery by injecting them, and some of them I couldn't inject because they were thrashing around so badly," Dr Reid recalled.
"In the space of 36 hours, I think there were nine horses that died or I had to put down ... it was just catastrophic because I didn't know what was killing them.
"Hendra virus attacks all organs in the body and particularly has focus on the lungs and the brain — so the horses are actually dying because they can't breathe because their lungs are filling up full of fluid.
"We thought it could have been a poison or a toxin — certainly there's been no virus that had ever been known to medical or veterinary science that could do this."
While detectives, health authorities, and scientists scrambled to figure out what had caused the animals' deaths, Mr Rail himself was struck down, showing symptoms similar to the horses.
He's one of four people to have died from the disease since it was discovered — the human mortality rate stands at almost 60 per cent.
"We know the best way to prevent people being infected to stop the transmission from fruit bats and horses to people, and that is by vaccinating the horses.
"It's safe and effective, it breaks the cycle of transmission.
"Don't think that it can't happen to you, because it can."

A rare neurological form of a common horse virus that can cause pregnant mares to abort foals has been detected in Queensland. Biosecurity Queensland confirmed equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) was found in Townsville and Toowoomba. Exact locations have not been disclosed, but authorities said one horse in the Townsville area showed neurological symptoms, while "a small number" of horses around Toowoomba had aborted foals. There is no risk to human health. Australian Veterinary Association president Gemma Chuck said EHV-1 was highly contagious and endemic across Australia, but the northern case was significant. "The neurological form is seen much more rarely [and] overseas, there have been deaths in horses." The virus usually causes mild respiratory illness or abortion in pregnant mares, but the neurological symptoms can include incoordination, hind-leg weakness, and difficulty standing, urinating or defecating. Dr Chuck said symptoms could resemble signs of Hendra virus, which could be fatal to horses and humans. "Just by looking at a horse with neurological signs, you're not going to know which one it is," she said. "This really shows the critical role that veterinarians have in protecting public health." A Queensland Department of Primary Industries spokesperson said tracing and risk assessments were complete and "the risk of this incident becoming a widespread outbreak remains low." Unlike Hendra virus, EHV-1 poses no risk to humans and spreads only between horses and donkeys. It is transmitted through direct contact, inhalation of respiratory droplets, or contaminated equipment. Horse owners are being urged to review their biosecurity protocols, limit horse movements, isolate sick animals, disinfect gear, and speak with veterinarians about vaccination. With the winter racing season, campdrafting, and major rodeos underway, Dr Chuck warned against moving unwell horses. "[In] overseas scenarios … there's been a lot of event cancellation when these things have got out of control," she said. "If your horse isn't well, then absolutely 100 per cent, it needs to stay at home." Horse owners are required by law to report suspected cases to Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23 or the Emergency Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Inclusive honey business opens beekeeping to students and community

It's not your average school day at Flagstone State Community College in south-east Queensland. Instead of sitting in classrooms, a group of secondary students is suited up in protective gear, carefully lifting frames from beehives under the guidance of local beekeepers Jason and Natasha Roebig. "We're just going to gently lever the frames. We're going to do one side at a time, until we can get that frame safely removed out of the hive, trying really hard not to squish any bees," Ms Roebig explains, as students peer into the hive. For year 7 student Amelia Hughes, the experience is initially nerve-racking. "I was a little bit scared they were going to sting me, but once I got comfortable around them, they didn't sting me at all," she says. Her classmate Oliver Thompson is more direct. "It's been a super fun day and I'd much rather be doing this than maths." Agriculture teacher Sarah Clarke says the impact of these hands-on experiences is immediate. "You just can't replicate this in a classroom," Ms Clarke says. "Their whole attitude changes, they're engaged, they're listening." Jason and Natasha Roebig run Bee All Natural, a boutique honey business based in Jimboomba. They produce traditional and creamed honey, as well as bath, body and beauty products. Their journey into beekeeping wasn't planned. It began with a personal mission to help their daughter, Miranda. "She was born with eczema," Ms Roebig says. "We tried everything, all the creams, all the natural creams and all the steroid creams. With nothing to lose, they gave it a shot and were shocked by the results. Encouraged by the improvement in Miranda's skin, they began experimenting with homemade balms, and soon friends and family began asking for samples. "So we decided that we'd make some for them too," Ms Roebig says. "And then we thought, if we can help Miranda with topical treatment, then we might be able to help other families too." The couple decided to invest in their own hives, and from there, things snowballed. Two hives became four, then 10, then 50. Today, they manage 450 hives across south-east Queensland's hinterland. "It's addictive," Mr Roebig laughs. Their daughter Miranda, now 12 and in year 7, is a key part of the family business. "Miranda is neurodiverse," Mr Roebig explains. "She was diagnosed with ASD [autism spectrum disorder] and ADD [attention deficit disorder] about five years ago, and later developed Tourette's. "But, we noticed that when she was actually working the bees with us, it all just disappeared. "She was so focused and so invested on what she was doing, it just melted away, and it was just amazing to stand back and just watch that." Miranda has embraced her role, even earning the nickname "Chief Smoker", using cool smoke to help calm the bees. "People kind of mistake me as a smoker," she jokes. "Don't get the wrong idea." Miranda enjoys working the bees with her parents and passing on some of the tricks of the trade she's already picked up. "I don't know that much about bees, but I know just enough to give a little education," she says. Inspired by Miranda's experience, the Roebigs began offering workshops, incursions and resources for schools, including beekeeping courses for beginners. They host tours and workshops at their home apiary. "They come by the busload sometimes — we have nursing homes, community centres, other groups, homeschooling," Ms Roebig says. Because of their interest in this space, they've become registered NDIS service providers, offering tailored beekeeping experiences to individuals with physical or cognitive challenges. "I guess having a daughter that is somewhat challenged in some aspects, we understand," Mr Roebig says. "Regardless of background or ability, we find a way to get people into a hive," Ms Roebig says. "Even if someone can't carry the weight of a hive, we locate equipment to help. We want everyone to be able to follow their passion into beekeeping." The workshops have proven successful, particularly with school students. "Teachers often point out kids who might be disruptive," Mr Roebig says. "But once they're working with the bees, the same as what Miranda was, they focused on what they were doing. "They were invested, and again, we could see that they were actually really calm." Sarah Clarke has seen the positive effect the beekeeping workshops have had on her class of secondary students. "They're so excited. Their whole attitude shifts. They're listening, really listening." For students like Oliver Thompson, the experience has sparked interest in pursuing beekeeping. "I reckon when I'm older, I'd love to have a property and have a section dedicated to bees. Have bees on it and have fresh honey." And for Ms Clarke, opening students' minds to consider agriculture as a possible career is the ultimate goal. "If just one of them decides this is a career they want to pursue, then I feel I've succeeded." For the Roebigs, success means more than business growth; it's about sharing their love of bees and building a sustainable legacy. "We would just love to see that we're making an impact," Ms Roebig says. "With all the work that we've done and all of the people that we've met through this journey, that we can work together to create this sustainable legacy for children, to then grow into that beekeeping space and keep our beekeeping industry alive for generations to come." Dehydration determined as cause of death for dementia patient missing from Qld hospital

Not a day goes by that Rod Roach does not think about his older brother Peter who walked out of a Queensland hospital never to be seen again. Peter Roach was a patient on an unsecured ward at the Rockhampton Hospital in central Queensland when he walked out while staff were responding to a nearby emergency in May 2023. The 80-year-old — who was deaf, non-verbal, and suffered from dementia — was not reported missing for at least two hours. Despite a days-long extensive land, air and water search, Peter was never found. "[It's] unbelievable. They knew that he was a bit of a wanderer, and he was still able to get out," Mr Roach said. After Peter's disappearance, another two elderly patients — both with Alzheimer's disease — walked out of central Queensland hospitals. Not being able to properly farewell his brother has left Mr Roach feeling empty and searching for answers. "There's no closure, not at all," he said. Australia's peak body for dementia advocacy said it was a national issue that families were increasingly raising. With an aging population it is a complex, multi-pronged problem that has prompted calls for change. A report from the Central Region's Coroner's Court of Queensland, issued in May this year, said Peter was last seen walking along Bowlin Bridge Road in east Rockhampton around 5:15pm on the day he went missing. Coroner David O'Connell confirmed he died from dehydration, likely due to exposure to the environment. "[It's] very likely he would have succumbed within a short period of time after he was last seen alive," the report read. It was not the first time Peter had wandered from hospital. Right to Information documents, obtained by the ABC, showed during his 55-day stay Peter had left the hospital multiple times and was known to sit by the exit on the ward. Action Review Meeting (ARM) and Human Error and Patient Safety (HEAPS) reports in the months after he disappeared included detailed reviews of the incident. Subsequent changes were put in place on all wards at Rockhampton Hospital with patients at risk of wandering, including: Central Queensland Health and Hospital Service (CQHHS) chief executive Lisa Blackler said the "deepest condolences" went out to Peter's family. "[It] deeply impacts not only his family but us as a healthcare provider, and we're doing everything we can to support great care to central Queenslanders and leaning in where we can for these types of patients," Ms Blacker said. She conceded striking a balance between keeping patients safe, while also respecting their freedoms, was a challenge. While the CQHHS said it had learnt lessons from Peter's disappearance, he would not be the last cognitively-impaired patient to walk out of a central Queensland public health facility. About 14 months after Peter left the Rockhampton Hospital, for what would be the last time, 80-year-old Margaret Carvell went missing from the same facility's emergency department. She was found hours later, in the evening, about 3 kilometres away. On a morning in March 2025 patient Edward Camille, 65, wandered from a surgical ward in the Gladstone Hospital, a facility about 100km south of Rockhampton that is also run by the CQHHS. He was also found several hours later. Ms Blackler said these two cases were different circumstances to Peter as they were not long-stay patients. According to the most up-to-date data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare hospitalisations due to dementia rose to 26,300 in the 2022-23 financial year. It does not have data on the instances of those patients wandering from hospital. Dementia Australia said part of the problem was a shortage of beds in aged care facilities gridlocking hospitals. Executive director Kaele Stokes said hospitals were not designed for patients with a cognitive impairment to stay long-term. "What we hear increasingly is that for people who are living with a cognitive impairment … it's often not a very supportive environment for them," Ms Stokes said. "It can add to their symptoms of cognitive impairment … [by] not feeling secure and choosing to leave that environment, which then adds additional stress for both the family and hospital staff. "That can [also] result in adverse medical outcomes and people needing to stay in hospital longer." But for some, like Peter , staying in hospital until an aged care bed becomes available was a necessity as it was not safe to return home. Queensland Health data from May this year showed there were more than 800 public hospital elderly long-stay patients across the state, of which 630 were awaiting a place in residential aged care. That was up from 539 in May 2023 when Peter went missing. Aged and Disability Advocacy Australia [ADA] said it also found it was more difficult for people with chronic health conditions or high support needs to access aged care. ADA chief executive Geoff Rowe said more investment was needed, not just in residential care but also at-home care. He said recent reform in the sector, prompted by the royal commission, was welcome but did not go far enough. Federal Minister for Aged Care and Seniors Sam Rae said the government was spending almost $1 billion on helping providers build, maintain and expand aged care homes. But in some communities services are taking matters into their own hands. In November last year CQHHS teamed up with an aged-care provider to roll out 30 extra interim-care beds in Emu Park on the Capricorn Coast for elderly hospital patients waiting for aged care beds. As for reducing the risk of patients wandering, Dementia Australia stressed the need for quiet patient spaces and more staff training. "Introducing yourself when you walk into a room, explaining why you were there, explaining why the person living with dementia is there, and what you're there to do can make a difference to helping to orient that person," Ms Stokes said. She said even simple observations of a patient's food and drink consumption could prevent flow-on medical effects. "Often we hear that someone with a form of dementia might not know to pull the top off the cup … so they don't drink anything and somebody comes in and takes the tray away," Ms Stokes said. CQHHS's Ms Blackler said staff did their best to ensure basic daily living schedules were adhered to but it was not always possible, "particularly in the shared room or a very busy patient ward". Both Dementia Australia and CQHHS also stressed the importance of family being involved in medical care plans and raising concerns. In addressing Rod Roach's concerns that information was not forthcoming from the hospital after his brother's disappearance, Ms Blackler apologised and said that the service always strove for transparency. For Mr Roach, the changes in hospital protocol have come too late, but he hopes no other family will have to go through what he has endured. "I just hope they will change their attitude towards dementia patients," he said. "I don't want any anyone to go through a loved one walking out of a hospital and never be seen again. It's not a good feeling."
