Union minister predicts a cotton revolution initiated from Coimbatore

Chouhan, along with Union minister of textiles Giriraj Singh, took part in a Stakeholder Consultation on Improving Cotton Production programme at the Sugarcane Breeding Institute in Coimbatore on Friday. The Central Institute for Cotton Research (CICR), Coimbatore region centre, organized the programme.
The Union ministers inspected the functioning of equipment used for cotton farming and the process of spraying pesticides using a drone.
Later, they held discussions with cotton farmers and govt officials. Cotton farmers from various states, including Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, participated and shared their views on the challenges they face in cotton cultivation and cultivation methods. The Union ministers assured that steps would be taken to fulfil all the farmers' demands.
In the afternoon, farmers from Coimbatore, Sulur, Tirupur and Palladam areas, led by BJP state agriculture unit president G K Nagaraj, held a face-to-face discussion with the Union ministers and submitted their demands.
Modakkurichi MLA C. Saraswathi and representatives of the farmers' association participated in this event.
Chouhan told reporters that measures to improve production and yields had been discussed. More specifics on pest control and types of diseases were discussed in the presence of the farmers.
"We are aiming to help farmers achieve better yields and encourage them to produce cotton types depending on the industry's needs. The ICAR scientists will study and research cotton infections. AI is also being integrated into farming for advanced solutions; as a result, AI smart traps are being deployed to identify and locate insects in the fields, especially the pink bollworm."
ICAR faculty highlighted that cotton exports had reached up to $10 billion and the income of six million cotton farmers increased 2-3 fold.

Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill aims to end country's democratic era, says Mamata
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday (August 20, 2025) condemned the introduction of the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025 in Parliament, calling it 'something that is more than a super-Emergency, a step to end the democratic era of India forever'. In a social media post, Ms. Banerjee said the Bill trampled upon the basic structure of the Constitution and sought to empower the 'Union to intrude upon the mandate of the people, handing sweeping powers to unelected authorities (ED, CBI — whom the Supreme Court has described as 'caged parrots') to interfere in the functioning of elected State governments'. She added that the Bill was a step to empower the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister 'in a sinister manner at the expense of the basic principles of our Constitution'. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday (August 20, 2025) introduced three Bills in the Lok Sabha, including the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, which has provisions for the removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers and Ministers if jailed or detained for 30 days for crimes punishable by five years or more. The Bills were sent to the joint committee of the Lok Sabha for examination. Pointing out that the intent of the Bill was to consolidate a system of 'one man, one party, one government', the Trinamool Congress chairperson said the Bill must be resisted at any cost and democracy must be saved at this moment. 'The Bill strikes at the basic structure of the Constitution — federalism, separation of powers, and judicial review — principles that even Parliament cannot override. If allowed to pass, it will be a death warrant for constitutional governance in India. We must resist this dangerous overreach. Our Constitution is not the property of those in temporary seats of power. It belongs to the people of India,' Ms. Banerjee said. She said the Bill was not aimed at any reform but a regression towards a system where the law no longer rests with independent courts but was placed in the hands of vested interests and an attempt to establish a rule where judicial scrutiny was silenced, constitutional safeguards were dismantled and the people's rights were trampled. 'This is how authoritarian regimes, even fascist ones in history, consolidated power. It reeks of the very mindset that the world once condemned in the darkest chapters of the 20th century,' she added. Later in the day, Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025 would never pass as it required the support of two-third MPs of the House. Mr. Banerjee, who is the leader of the party in the Lok Sabha, told journalists that the Bill was aimed to divert the attention of the people from SIR (Special Intensive Revision) in Bihar. The Trinamool leader said if the BJP leadership could introduce such a Bill with 240 seats then the apprehensions that they want to change the Constitution was correct. 'Having failed in its attempt to misuse the EC to implement special intensive revision (SIR), the government has now activated another 'E' — ED — to bring in laws that target opposition leaders, crush democracy and manipulate the people's mandate by toppling State governments,' the Diamond Harbour MP said on social media. Speaking to media persons, Ms. Banerjee said 'we will strongly take up the matter of women MPs of Trinamool Congress being assaulted during the proceedings of the Parliament with the Speaker of Lok Sabha.'

Cotton farmers condemn removal of import duty, call it a disastrous setback
The Andhra Pradesh Tenant Farmers Association slammed the Union government's decision to remove the 11% import duty on cotton, calling it a 'severe blow' to India's cotton growers. In a press release on Wednesday (August 20), association State general secretary P. Jamalayya and president E. Katamayyah said the Union government scrapped the import duty on cotton, effective from August 19, and it will remain in force until September 30. The government claimed the decision was taken in the interest of the public and agricultural infrastructure development. Farmers' unions, however, dismissed this reasoning as 'false and misleading.' They feared that scrapping import duties would depress domestic cotton prices, allowing importers and traders to stockpile cheap foreign cotton and manipulate markets when the Indian harvest begins in October. 'This will directly hurt small and marginal tenant farmers, pushing them into deeper debt and triggering more farmer suicides,' they felt. They pointed out that the MSP announced for cotton this year is ₹7,710 a quintal, far below the ₹10,075 a quintal recommended under the C2+50% formula. In Andhra Pradesh alone, cotton is grown on nearly 15 lakh acres, meaning lakhs of agricultural families would be severely affected, they said and urged the Centre to restore import duties, guarantee MSP at C2+50%, and ensure that the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) purchases cotton to protect domestic farmers.

Radhakrishnan filed his nomination in the presence of about 20 proposers and 20 supporters. Earlier today, he paid floral tribute to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the Parliament premises. He also paid tribute to the statues of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, Rani Lakshmibai, BR Ambedkar and Bhagwan Birsa Munda at the Parliament. CP Radhakrishnan was accompanied by Union Ministers Pralhad Joshi, Kiren Rijiju, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Dharmendra Pradhan, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, L Murugan and BJP leader Vinod Tawade. Earlier on Tuesday, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge announced Sudershan Reddy as the INDIA bloc's candidate for the VP elections. Kharge, in an X post, said, "This Vice Presidential contest is an ideological battle. All Opposition parties have nominated Shri B. Sudershan Reddy garu as their joint candidate for the position of the Vice President of India." Rahul Gandhi also said that the Opposition is united in this "ideological battle". "I warmly congratulate B Sudershan Reddy Garu on being nominated as the joint opposition candidate for the Vice President of India. A distinguished jurist and champion of justice, he represents the spirit of our Constitution - safeguarding people's rights, equality and our Democracy. We stand united in this ideological battle and wish him all the very best," Gandhi posted on X. Kharge said Reddy would file his nomination on August 21.
