Mobile Animal Services takes in 34 abused dogs, now far over capacity
MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — City of Mobile Animal Services recently took in 34 abused dogs, while the facility is already over capacity.
FBI joins investigation of deadly Clarke County crash that killed 2, injured 4
Mobile Animal Services started taking in the dogs on Tuesday after the City of Mobile's Public Safety Department received a complaint about an animal welfare concern in the Trinity Gardens community last week.
'All of the dogs are currently here at the shelter or at the vet's office being evaluated,' Mobile Animal Services Director Robert Bryant said.
This week, Mobile Animal Services conducted a site inspection in the Trinity Gardens community and found the dogs living in 'unacceptable conditions.'
'Several of the animals were being kept inside of what we call whelping pens, which is kind of a box cage that breeders use to raise puppies in, and several of the dogs were also tethered around the property,' Bryant said.
Bryant said four dogs were taken Monday for medical care. That was followed up with a search warrant, and the rest of the dogs were removed on Tuesday from the property.
'On face value, it looks like a very, very large breeding operation, a backyard breeding operation,' Bryant said.
No one is in custody, but Bryant said they plan to file charges by the end of this week or early next week.
The shelter is still, however, left with another problem.
They are now far over their capacity of around 100, and need to find homes for dogs that were already at the shelter to accommodate the abused animals.
Some are already answering that call, and adopting.
'We knew the story, and we figured we'd come down here and see if he had a connection,' pet adopter Patrick Ziebe said. 'We have a half German shepherd, half bullmastiff. She's about seven years old. And we felt like she needed a companion.'

To help the cause, adoption fees are being waived, and the shelter is open for walk-ins from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. including this weekend.

3 killed and scores injured as Russia targets Ukraine with new attacks
KYIV, Ukraine -- Russian forces have pummeled Ukraine with drones and other weapons, killing three people and injuring scores of others despite international pressure to accept a ceasefire, officials said Thursday. According to the Ukrainian air force, Russia launched a barrage of 63 drones and decoys at Ukraine overnight. It said that air defenses destroyed 28 drones while another 21 were jammed. Ukraine's police said two people were killed and six were injured over the past 24 hours in the eastern Donetsk region, the focus of the Russian offensive. One person was killed and 14 others were also injured in the southern Kherson region, which is partly occupied by Russian forces, police said. The head of the Kharkiv region, Oleh Syniehubov, said that 15 people, including four children, were injured by Russian drone attacks overnight. Kharkiv city mayor Ihor Terekhov said Russian drones targeted residential districts, educational facilities, kindergartens and other civilian infrastructure. 'Kharkiv is holding on. People are alive. And that is the most important thing,' Terekhov said. The Russian military has launched waves of drones and missiles in recent days, with a record bombardment of almost 500 drones on Monday and a wave of 315 drones and seven missiles overnight on Tuesday. The recent escalation in aerial attacks has come alongside a renewed Russian battlefield push along eastern and northeastern parts of the more than 1,000-kilometer (over 600-mile) front line. While Russian missile and drone barrage have struck regions all across Ukraine, regions along the front line have faced daily Russian attacks with short-range exploding drones and glide bombs. Ukraine hit back with drone raids. Russia's Defense Ministry said that air defenses downed 52 Ukrainian drones early Thursday, including 41 over the Belgorod region that borders Ukraine. Regional Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov said three people were injured by Ukrainian attacks Thursday. The attacks have continued despite discussions of a potential ceasefire in the war. During their June 2 talks in Istanbul, Russian and Ukrainian negotiators traded memorandums containing sharply divergent conditions that both sides see as nonstarters, making any quick deal unlikely. Speaking at a meeting of leaders of southeast European countries in Odesa, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged the European Union to toughen its latest package of sanctions against Russia. He argued that lowering the cap on the price of Russian oil from $60 to $45 as the bloc has proposed isn't enough. 'Real peace comes with a $30 cap -– that's the level that will truly change thinking in Moscow,' Zelenskyy said. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius arrived in Kyiv Thursday on an unannounced visit, noting that the stepped-up Russian attacks on Ukraine send a message from Moscow that it has 'no interest in a peaceful solution at present,' according to German news agency dpa. Pistorius said his visit underlines that the new German government continues to stand by Ukraine. 'Of course this will also be about how the support of Germany and other Europeans will look in future – what we can do, for example, in the area of industrial cooperation, but also other support,' he said.

Baldwin County's first Safe Haven baby box blessed in Daphne
DAPHNE, Ala., (WKRG) — On the corner of the newest fire station in Daphne, a first for Baldwin County. A Safe Haven Baby Box. Hundreds run across iconic Mobile bridge to help Africatown 'You would simply walk up to the box, you open that door, you place the baby in the medical grade safe bassinet, close the door and walk away,' said Caitlin Kelly with Safe Haven Baby Boxes. She calls the boxes an extension of the Safe Haven law, a law that allows the surrender of infants up to 45 days old in Alabama. An option that wouldn't be possible without Alabama State Representative Donna Givens. 'My heart was touched. I knew I had to do it for the state of Alabama,' Givens said. The Daphne location is the 18th baby box in Alabama. More are planned, including at fire stations in Foley and in Spanish Fort. The goal is to save lives with no name, no shame and no blame, according to Kelly. 'The bravest and hardest decision. As a mother, I cannot understand it. As an adoptive mother, I am so grateful for it.' The box has three alarms; once the door is opened, first responders are notified within seconds. 'If someone chooses to use this box, we will see to it that that baby gets to their next phase and there's hope,' said Daphne Fire Chief LeAnn Tacon. So far this year, more than 60 infants have been surrendered across the nation. Son kills mother before being killed by brother: Mobile police Kelly says it is not a matter of 'if' the newest baby box will be used, but when. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
