Mobile Animal Services takes in 34 abused dogs, now far over capacity
MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — City of Mobile Animal Services recently took in 34 abused dogs, while the facility is already over capacity.

Mobile Animal Services started taking in the dogs on Tuesday after the City of Mobile's Public Safety Department received a complaint about an animal welfare concern in the Trinity Gardens community last week.
'All of the dogs are currently here at the shelter or at the vet's office being evaluated,' Mobile Animal Services Director Robert Bryant said.
This week, Mobile Animal Services conducted a site inspection in the Trinity Gardens community and found the dogs living in 'unacceptable conditions.'
'Several of the animals were being kept inside of what we call whelping pens, which is kind of a box cage that breeders use to raise puppies in, and several of the dogs were also tethered around the property,' Bryant said.
Bryant said four dogs were taken Monday for medical care. That was followed up with a search warrant, and the rest of the dogs were removed on Tuesday from the property.
'On face value, it looks like a very, very large breeding operation, a backyard breeding operation,' Bryant said.
No one is in custody, but Bryant said they plan to file charges by the end of this week or early next week.
The shelter is still, however, left with another problem.
They are now far over their capacity of around 100, and need to find homes for dogs that were already at the shelter to accommodate the abused animals.
Some are already answering that call, and adopting.
'We knew the story, and we figured we'd come down here and see if he had a connection,' pet adopter Patrick Ziebe said. 'We have a half German shepherd, half bullmastiff. She's about seven years old. And we felt like she needed a companion.'

To help the cause, adoption fees are being waived, and the shelter is open for walk-ins from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. including this weekend.

Baldwin County's first Safe Haven baby box blessed in Daphne
DAPHNE, Ala., (WKRG) — On the corner of the newest fire station in Daphne, a first for Baldwin County. A Safe Haven Baby Box. Hundreds run across iconic Mobile bridge to help Africatown 'You would simply walk up to the box, you open that door, you place the baby in the medical grade safe bassinet, close the door and walk away,' said Caitlin Kelly with Safe Haven Baby Boxes. She calls the boxes an extension of the Safe Haven law, a law that allows the surrender of infants up to 45 days old in Alabama. An option that wouldn't be possible without Alabama State Representative Donna Givens. 'My heart was touched. I knew I had to do it for the state of Alabama,' Givens said. The Daphne location is the 18th baby box in Alabama. More are planned, including at fire stations in Foley and in Spanish Fort. The goal is to save lives with no name, no shame and no blame, according to Kelly. 'The bravest and hardest decision. As a mother, I cannot understand it. As an adoptive mother, I am so grateful for it.' The box has three alarms; once the door is opened, first responders are notified within seconds. 'If someone chooses to use this box, we will see to it that that baby gets to their next phase and there's hope,' said Daphne Fire Chief LeAnn Tacon. So far this year, more than 60 infants have been surrendered across the nation. Mobile mayoral candidate Spiro Cheriogotis takes a sizeable lead in campaign contributions
MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Spiro Cheriogotis extended his financial advantage over Mobile's five other mayoral candidates last month, according to campaign finance filings with the Alabama Secretary of State. Orange Beach Billfish Classic ends with record purse Cheriogotis, a former Mobile County District Judge, received cash contributions of $231,000 in May, three times more than the next candidate was able to raise, and more than the other five candidates combined. County Commissioner Connie Hudson received cash contributions of $75,200. Former Mobile Police Chief Paul Prine raised $40,900. State Representative Barbara Drummond received $29,300 in cash donations. Former City Councilman Jermaine Burrell raised $22,300. Former Police Chief Lawrence Battiste received $1,750 in cash donations. With the election 11 weeks out, Cheriogotis has almost more cash on hand than his five opponents combined. His campaign balance at the end of May was $676,400. Hudson had $397,600 on hand, Drummond $129,200, Burrell $75,700, Prine $69,100 and Battiste $5,700. Hudson carried over $158,000 from her last campaign for County Commissioner. Drummond brought $30,000 from her State Representative campaign balance. Baldwin County's first Safe Haven baby box blessed in Daphne Cheriogotis has been endorsed by outgoing Mayor Sandy Stimpson who is not running for a fourth four-year term.
