Protea Glen learners explore career expos
For the past 24 years, the Rocking Future Career Expos (RFCE) has been the beacon of hope for matriculants, guiding them through the maze of career options and job opportunities.
Since its inception in 2001 by Kay Cheytanov, this project has evolved into a mighty platform that motivates and empowers students to seize the reins of their futures.
The expo has grown to encompass more than 240 schools annually, inspiring more than 35 000 matric students.

The expos provide learners with a wide choice of choices from private tertiary institutions, eliminating access barriers and offering courses in skills development, work readiness, and practical studies.
Some of the schools which have been lucky enough to participate in this project include Curro Protea Glen, Acudeo College Protea Glen, St Barnabas and many more.
Students like Liane Nieuwenhuizen and Zander Van Rooyen discovered their place in performance and sound engineering at the expo.
It caters to students with diverse backgrounds, interests, skills, and aspirations.
According to Cheytanov, The Future Guide Magazine is a valuable publication for students, packed with facts on university life and education beyond school.
The Rocking Future expos have also created an online virtual career expo named Swiwel, available to every learner from Grade 8 up to 12, in all provinces.
She said they had visited 55 schools and inspired 6 246 students in Johannesburg alone and 152 schools and 19 186 students across our major cities by the end of March this year.
Cheytanov further noted that they have launched a new initiative named Success Starters to all the high schools who have decided to join the Rocking Future team this year.
She added students have been invited to join them on this motivational quest as they look for an outstanding student who is worthy of being awarded as the 2025 Success Starter Star.
'We are on a mission to spotlight extraordinary students in our schools who exemplify passion and dedication.
'We are looking for young entrepreneurs, talented performers, culinary creators, creative artists, sports champions and tech innovators. We believe these young minds are the future,' she continued.
'We will be sharing a link to our website where schools can nominate one outstanding Grade 11 student from their school. The top 20 nominees from across South Africa will be in for a treat. They will get bursaries from top private tertiary colleges along with other great prizes.'

MMC for Corporate Services, Mokete Motsamai highlighted that as part of the mayoral commitment to creating a forward-thinking, responsive local government, the municipality strives to push the boundaries of innovation. 'By integrating cutting-edge digital technologies,the municipality aims to enhance service delivery across Midvaal, ensuring that no community is left behind. This commitment includes a focus on equitable access to services.' The first day of the event included engaging presentations and a dynamic panel discussion with leading digital industry experts, who discussed the latest trends in technology, innovation, and inclusive service delivery. On May 23 and 24, the Expo featured a hackathon, where graduates from the Midvaal area collaborated to develop innovative, inclusive solutions for real municipal challenges. The hackathon is a unique opportunity for local talent to actively contribute to the future of their community, with a strong focus on designing accessible and equitable digital solutions. The event provided a platform for thought leaders, industry experts, and innovators to explore how digital advancements can enhance governance, particularly by ensuring the benefits of technology are accessible to all residents. Ramaphosa appoints Mantashe as acting president of South Africa
President Cyril Ramaphosa is in the US and his deputy Paul Mashatile is visiting France. With President Cyril Ramaphosa and Deputy President Paul Mashatile both out of the country, Minister of Energy Gwede Mantashe has been tasked with running South Africa. Ramaphosa's spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, said the president has, in terms of Section 90(1)(b) of the constitution, designated Mantashe as the acting president of the Republic of South Africa from 18 to 22 May 2025. 'This designation flows from the simultaneous Working Visits by President Ramaphosa and Deputy President Paul Mashatile to the United States of America and the Republic of France, respectively.' Acting President Mantashe Mantashe was first thrust into the role during Freedom Day last month. He delivered the keynote address at the national Freedom Day celebration at the AJ Swanepoel Stadium in Ermelo, Mpumalanga. Ramaphosa was expected to deliver the address, but he was booked off with the flu. But he did wish South Africans well as the country celebrated 31 years of democracy. The deputy president's visit follows a recent visit by Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola on May 16, 2025, to co-chair the 9th Session of the Forum for Political Dialogue (FPD), during which the status of bilateral political relations between the two countries was discussed, including matters of mutual interest relating to international developments.
