'Pitbull type' dog leaves mum's face 'pouring with blood' in attack on night out

A mum has revealed the terrifying moment a dog latched onto her face and left her needing 20 stitches after what began as a seemingly innocent gesture on a night out. Cody Davies had been out with a friend when she stopped to stroke a dog, which she described as a "pitbull type".
Within seconds, it jumped up and bit her in the face. The 31-year-old says she was left with "blood pouring" from the wound and that she was lucky not to lose her lip following the attack on Mathew Street in Liverpool at 1am on Sunday. Cody, from Port Sunlight, was taken to Aintree Hospital from the city centre where she received 20 stitches to her face before leaving at around 10am yesterday.
The mum is now urging others to not approach dogs unless they're certain they are safe. "I feel terrible and I feel so sad. I love my dogs and this dog was just playing with its owner in the street so I went over to stroke it," Cody told the Liverpool Echo.
"When I went over, the woman didn't say anything about not approaching them but when I did, it jumped up and bit my face. I was running around with my hands covering my face and blood pouring from my face. No taxis would take me because I was covered in blood and thankfully someone rang an ambulance for me."
Cody has since filed a police report and is hoping officers can track down the woman, so that no one else is attacked by the dog. The mum-of-two, who has two French bulldogs herself, said the incident has made her wary around dogs and has struggled explaining the attack to her daughter. She is also concerned her injuries will affect her job as a brand ambassador on social media.
Merseyside Police confirmed the force is investigating the incident, including speaking to potential witnesses and exploring possible CCTV footage. Chief Inspector Nathaniel Stockley said: "This attack left a woman requiring hospital treatment for injuries to her face. We have identified the dog and its owner and our enquiries into the incident are ongoing.
"We are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident who may have information to come forward as soon as possible. This case highlights in stark terms the potential dangers of dogs, and I would appeal to anyone with information about dangerous dogs in their area to contact us so that we can take proactive action."

Nine people smugglers jailed in France over fatal Channel small boat crossing
Seven Afghan nationals and two Iraqis were sentenced to a total of 64 years in prison after being found guilty of offences including involuntary manslaughter, endangering lives and facilitating illegal entry at a trial in Lille on Monday, the NCA said. The Afghan ringleader was handed an eight-year jail term, while the other members of the network received seven-year sentences. Drones were used during a large overnight search and rescue operation off the Kent coast to scan the water for anyone unaccounted for, with ships also asked to post lookouts. Four people were confirmed to have died in the incident while another four were never found, with the survivors rescued and brought to shore in Dover. Then-prime minister Rishi Sunak described the incident as a 'tragic loss of human life'. Interviews were conducted with the survivors as part of the NCA's investigation, which was aided by Kent Police. The boat's pilot, 20-year-old Senegalese national Ibrahima Bah, was jailed for nine-and-a-half years for the manslaughter of the four victims following a trial at Canterbury Crown Court in February last year. Jurors were told during the trial that the home-built, low-quality inflatable should not have had more than 20 people on board, while many of the passengers did not have life-jackets. Nine members of a people smuggling network have been sentenced over a small boat crossing which left four people dead and another four missing. Seven Afghan nationals and two Iraqis were convicted of offences including involuntary manslaughter, endangering lives and facilitating illegal entry following a trial in Lille, northern France. One of the men was tried in his absence after fleeing France before trial. The judge handed the Afghan ringleader of the gang an eight-year jail term. The others were sentenced to seven years each. It followed a criminal investigation, supported by the National Crime Agency (NCA), into an incident on 14 December 2022, when a boat carrying 47 people got into trouble in the English Channel. Four people were confirmed to have died and another four were never found. The survivors were rescued by a British fishing vessel and brought to shore in Dover. The NCA and Kent Police worked with the French authorities to identify those responsible for putting the boat in the water. They provided crucial intelligence and evidence to French investigators including interviews with the survivors. Senegalese national Ibrahima Bah, 20, was later convicted in the UK of piloting the boat. His trial, at Canterbury Crown Court, heard how the 'death trap' dinghy was heavily overloaded, and only had space for around 20 people. Many of those on board did not have life-jackets.
