Advanced genetic blueprint could unlock precision medicine
Traditional genetic research has mainly relied on linear reference genomes, which is like having a single, standard version of human DNA that scientists compare everyone's genetic information against. This works well for studying individual genetics but does not capture all the complexities and differences found in diverse populations.
The Arab Pangenome Reference (APR) takes a different approach. Instead of relying on just one "standard" genome, it includes a collection of many different genetic versions specific to the Arab population. This helps scientists see the full picture of genetic diversity, including variations and unique traits that might be missed using the old method.
The international group of researchers led by the Center for Applied and Translational Genomics (CATG) at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, in partnership with the University of Birmingham, Dubai published their findings today (4 Mar) in Nature Medicine. Authors included Nasna Nassir, Mohamed A. Almarri, Hosneara Akter, Hamda Hassan Khansaheb, K. M. Furkan Uddin, Ahmad Abou Tayoun, Stefan Du Plessis, Marc Haber, Alawi Alsheikh-Ali and Mohammed Uddin. Nature Medicine is recognized for its rigorous peer-review process and its commitment to disseminating high-quality studies and opinion pieces that advance our understanding of human health.
Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Deputy CEO and Chief Academic Officer of Dubai Health and Provost of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, commented: 'This publication provides a comprehensive and inclusive perspective on human genetic diversity, ensuring that the unique genetic landscapes of the Middle East and South Asia are represented. Dr. Mohammed Uddin Director of the Center for Applied and Translational Genomics (CATG) at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, commented: 'The APR is the first reference genome constructed to capture the genetic diversity among Arabs. This landmark resource aims to enhance early diagnosis and personalized treatments for genetic diseases that are prevalent in the region. This research uncovered millions of base pairs of novel human DNA sequences, which will contribute to a deeper understanding of the genetic origins of diseases and traits. Our goal is to construct graph pangenomes encompassing the entire Middle East and South Asia, aiming to accelerate the adoption of precision medicine in these regions.'
Co-author Marc Haber, from the University of Birmingham Dubai, commented: 'The precision offered by pangenomic approaches is particularly beneficial for studying rare and previously undetected disease-causing variants which paves the way for better understanding and treatment of these conditions, leading to new discoveries in population genetics, disease susceptibility and drug response.'

Al Jalila Foundation supports 60 organ transplant patients through 'Your Donation Saves Lives' campaign
Dr. Amer Al Zarooni: Your Donation Saves Lives campaign has now evolved into a permanent initiative under the Foundation's A'awen program. Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Al Jalila Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dubai Health, announced that it has contributed to saving the lives of 60 patients by supporting organ transplant surgeries as part of the first and second editions of the Your Donation Saves Lives campaign. The announcement coincides with World Organ Donation Day, observed annually on 13 August, and reflects the Foundation's long-term commitment to supporting patients with organ failure and fostering a culture of organ donation as a humanitarian value. Since its launch in April 2021, the campaign has supported 60 transplant procedures, including 53 kidney transplants and 7 liver transplants. Among these are 24 children with kidney failure and 5 children with liver failure. As part of this program, the Foundation continues to support more than 65 patients with life-saving transplants, who are unable to access or afford specialized care. These efforts are aligned with the goals of HAYAT, the National Program for Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation and are carried out in partnership with Dubai Health's integrated academic health system. From Campaign to Permanent Program Dr. Amer Al Zarooni, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation, announced that the Your Donation Saves Lives campaign has now evolved into a permanent initiative under the Foundation's A'awen program, which provides financial assistance to patients in need of critical medical treatment across the UAE, a step that aligns with Dubai Health's commitment, 'Patient First'. 'On World Organ Donation Day, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting patients with organ failure and extend our heartfelt thanks to the generous donors, individuals and institutions alike, who contributed to both the first and second editions of the Your Donation Saves Lives campaign. Their support represents a powerful model of human solidarity, with the first edition alone helping to fund nearly 30% of all organ transplants performed in Dubai,' said Dr. Al Zarooni. He also extended his appreciation to living organ donors and to the families of deceased donors, saying: 'Your compassion has given others a second chance at life. We thank you for your extraordinary generosity.' Ensuring Safe, Successful Transplants Dr. Ashraf Al Hinnawi, Consultant Transplant Surgeon at Dubai Health, explained that the medical team works collaboratively to thoroughly evaluate both the donor and the recipient before transplantation, ensuring the highest possible long-term success rates. 'We conduct comprehensive assessments of kidney function and immune compatibility between the donor and recipient, along with detailed medical and surgical evaluations that include lab tests and imaging studies to ensure the success of the transplant. We also follow up with patients regularly after the procedure to ensure adherence to the treatment plan and to closely monitor kidney function.' Regarding living donors, Dr. Al Hinnawi noted that they undergo meticulous evaluations, including assessment of the kidneys, functional testing, and screening for any infectious or cancerous conditions, in addition to psychological and social assessments. He added that all cases are reviewed by a multidisciplinary medical committee to determine donor eligibility, ensuring the highest levels of safety for both donor and recipient. A Lifeline for Patients in Need Al Jalila Foundation continues to welcome donations through A'awen, offering individuals and organizations the opportunity to fund life-changing programs that enhance well-being and provide essential medical care. The first edition of the campaign was launched in April 2021 in collaboration with Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department, and Emarat Al Youm newspaper. The second edition took place in September 2024 and concluded in December of the same year, as part of a collaboration between the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department, Al Jalila Foundation, and Emarat Al Youm newspaper. Transplant surgeries were conducted in partnership with Dubai Health's Dubai Hospital and Al Jalila Children's Hospital, alongside Mediclinic City Hospital and King's College Hospital London in Dubai. Stories of Hope Yousef's New Beginning Among the beneficiaries of the campaign, is the child Yousef Jashim, who underwent a kidney transplant with the support of Al Jalila Foundation. Yousef suffered from constant fatigue and recurring pain and was undergoing regular dialysis sessions that significantly affected his daily life and imposed strict dietary restrictions. When he turned fourteen, the doctors informed his family of the necessity of a kidney transplant as an essential step in his treatment journey. Al Jalila Foundation's support was instrumental, helping the family cover the cost of the surgery. Following the transplant, Yousef's life transformed. He regained his energy and no longer required dialysis. His mother expressed deep gratitude to Al Jalila Foundation, the medical teams involved in his care, and the wider community whose support helped save her son's life. Roula's Healing Journey Roula Tabba'a is also among the beneficiaries of the campaign, following a long journey with kidney failure. She underwent dialysis three times a week, which caused severe physical and emotional exhaustion. Her condition was first diagnosed in 2016, and she underwent several surgeries. Al Jalila Foundation covered the cost of her dialysis sessions and medical tests, eventually supporting her inclusion in the kidney transplant program. After years of waiting, Roula received a life-changing call from the medical team confirming that she had been approved for the procedure. Thanks to the dedication of the medical staff, the transplant was successful. Her life was completely transformed following the surgery, she no longer needed dialysis and regained her ability to move freely, travel, and live independently. ADFD: Strategic partner in advancing comprehensive Arab development
The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has reinforced its position as one of the most prominent contributors in supporting economic and social progresses efforts in Arab countries, financing strategic projects that promote stability, drive growth and enhance quality of life, underscoring the UAE's steadfast commitment to its Arab neighbours. In recent years, the fund has broadened its engagement across the Arab region, translating its mission into tangible projects in vital sectors such as healthcare, energy and infrastructure, areas that are fundamental to the stability and future of communities. Each project represents a solid step forward in the path to comprehensive development. According to its 2024 Annual Report, ADFD's cumulative development financing reached AED216.5 billion, benefiting 107 countries across various continents. This total comprises AED157 billion in concessional loans, AED57.6 billion in government grants, and AED1.9 billion in direct contributions. In statements to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), the Fund said that in 2024 it managed six UAE government grants to Arab nations worth a combined AED810 million, benefiting Jordan, Morocco, Yemen and Mauritania. Jordan received more than AED452 million for three key projects: a national digital health transformation programme, budget support, and a reading skills development programme. Morocco was allocated AED129 million for the expansion of the Oued Akrach - Ain Aouda Road, Yemen received AED45 million for a solar power project in Socotra, and Mauritania was granted AED184 million for the Applied Sciences College. Among the standout initiatives is Jordan's recently launched 'Jordan Digital Health Centre', which aims to connect healthcare centres and create an integrated electronic medical records management system through a unified digital platform, to enhance Jordan's healthcare sector in delivering remote care services aligned with international standards. Phase one has already linked five hospitals in remote areas and three health centres across the kingdom, reflecting the depth of the UAE–Jordan cooperation in advancing development through digital innovation. The fund also oversees UAE grants under the Arab Gulf Programme for Development (AGFUND), with AED4.6 billion allocated each to Jordan and Morocco between 2012 and 2024 to support projects that directly improve citizens' lives. In the same period, Bahrain received an AED9.2 billion grant under the GCC Development Programme for major projects across various sectors. In 2025, ADFD has continued to implement high-impact investment projects across the Arab world. These include Egypt's 'Sofitel Legend Pyramids Giza' to support the tourism sector, an integrated tourism venture in Salalah, Oman, and the expansion of Bahrain International Airport. The fund has also advanced renewable energy in the Comoros through a solar power station, supported community stability in Somaliland with a housing project, and in June signed a financing agreement with the GCC Interconnection Authority for a strategic project to strengthen regional energy security. By championing strategic, high-value initiatives, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development continues to act as a vital bridge for progress, reflecting the UAE's enduring commitment to spreading stability and prosperity across the Arab region and beyond.
