UAE: More police patrols, restaurant inspections for residents' safety this Ramadan
Authorities have ramped up inspections of restaurants to ensure food safety and also increased police patrols around mosques to enhance road safety this Ramadan.
Fujairah Municipality has carried out a total of 687 inspection rounds of food outlets. Eng Hassan Salem Al Yamahi, director-general of Fujairah Municipality, said inspectors not only focused on checking compliance with stringent sanitary regulations but also looked into food prices, labelling, and adherence to health codes.
'The initiative is aimed at safeguarding public health and ensuring fairness in the market to maintain a safe and regulated environment for consumers,' noted Al Yamahi.
'We conducted over 680 inspections to ensure food outlets followed safety standards and complied with the necessary regulations,' said Al Yamahi, adding the campaign also saw 79 permits issued to Ramadan-specific stores in Fujairah that are catering to the increased demand for food and products during the holy month.
More police patrols
Meanwhile, Sharjah Traffic Police said they will enhance patrols around mosques during prayer times to regulate parking and ensure proper entry and exit of worshippers. Illegal parking — a common cause of congestion and accidents — will also be closely monitored. Erring motorists will be fined, and negative traffic behaviours, such as distracted driving, will be targeted to protect both road users and pedestrians, authorities said.
Col Mohammad Alai Al Naqbi, director of the Traffic and Patrols Department of Sharjah Police, emphasised the importance of being vigilant to prevent fatal accidents and injuries involving pedestrians. "Motorists need to drive with caution during Iftar times to avoid accidents, as many pedestrians are crossing streets in a rush to get home," he told Khaleej Times.
Al Naqbi said special patrols are stationed at strategic areas, including busy markets and shopping malls, to monitor and regulate traffic, particularly in locations with heavy foot traffic where pedestrian accidents are more likely to occur. This initiative comes as part of ongoing efforts to reduce the risk of accidents, which traditionally increase during the holy month.
'In addition to monitoring traffic, we are focusing on preventing fatal accidents and injuries, which tend to rise at this time of year. Our patrols will focus on ensuring pedestrians cross at designated areas and will fine any motorists found violating traffic rules, particularly those speeding or driving recklessly,' he added.

Sharjah fire: Cooling operations underway after massive blaze in Al Hamriyah
Cooling operations are currently underway at Al Hamriyah Port in Sharjah, following a massive fire that took 24 hours to bring under control. 'The rapid response, high-level coordination, and use of specialised equipment played a vital role in bringing the situation under control without casualties,' he said. 'What we witnessed was an integrated national effort.' Key support also came from the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Defence, National Guard, National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA), and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc), all of whom contributed equipment, personnel, and technical expertise.

Sharjah Police refer two men to public prosecution after road rage turns violent
Sharjah Police started investigating an assault incident that took place on one of the emirate's streets. Earlier, a dispute broke out between two Arabs while driving and snowballed into a verbal and physical assault between the two parties due to a misunderstanding. Immediately after receiving a report to this effect, police patrols rushed to the scene of the incident, where they summoned both parties, took their statements and referred the case to the Public Prosecution for further legal procedures. Brigadier Ibrahim Musabah Al Ajel, Director General of General Department of Comprehensive Police Stations, affirmed that Sharjah Police deal firmly with such incidents that do not reflect a proper social practice, stressing the importance of self-control in daily situations and the need to avoid being swept away by negative reactions. He also underscored the need to avoid filming such incidents and posting them on social media, noting that this constitutes a legal violation punishable by law. Such material should be submitted directly to the concerned authorities to enable them to take the necessary action, he said. Reiterating its commitment to maintaining security and stability, Sharjah Police called on everyone to co-operate and participate positively in promoting a safe environment for all. Sharjah: Road rage between 2 drivers turns violent; legal action taken
Authorities in Sharjah referred two Arab nationals to public prosecution after verbal and physical assault took place as a result of misunderstanding while they were driving. Sharjah Police immediately went to the scene of the incident, called the parties and took their statements, and handed the case over to the public prosecutor to complete legal proceedings.
