Kuwait has several sites fit for UNESCO Geoparks status: official

KUWAIT CITY, May 17: Dr. Mubarak Al-Hajri, Chairman of the Kuwait Society for Earth Sciences, affirmed that Kuwait possesses several significant geological sites that could be eligible for inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.
In an interview with the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Saturday, Al-Hajri stated that geological parks are increasingly seen as integral to sustainable development strategies. They offer not only economic benefits but also contribute to tourism and the preservation of cultural heritage.
He emphasized that integrating Kuwaiti sites into the UNESCO Geoparks Network is a strategic objective of the society, which seeks to preserve the country's geological heritage in collaboration with relevant government entities.
Al-Hajri explained that geological parks are areas of unique and diverse geological significance managed under a framework that promotes both conservation and sustainable development. These parks serve as educational platforms, research hubs, and tourist attractions, fostering environmental awareness and supporting local economies through job creation and community engagement.
'These natural areas serve as open-air laboratories for students and researchers studying earth sciences, biodiversity, and climate history,' he said. 'They are also appealing destinations for nature enthusiasts and eco-tourists.'
He noted that geological parks have proven successful in other countries, particularly in promoting disaster risk awareness and supporting biodiversity through the conservation of unique ecosystems. They also play a role in educating the public on the dangers of earthquakes and volcanic activity.
Describing the society's vision, Al-Hajri said the initiative is a national project that requires close collaboration between the government and private sectors, non-profit organizations, and academic institutions. The parks would also showcase traditional crafts, local cuisine, and cultural activities, all aligned with sustainable development goals and aimed at protecting rare sites from neglect or misuse.
He highlighted Al-Subiya as one of the primary candidates for the initial phase of the project. The area is rich in historical and environmental value, having once hosted the Ubaid civilization, and features diverse wildlife and ecosystems that support its potential as a designated geopark.
Al-Hajri outlined a phased approach for the project's completion. This includes evaluating geological, environmental, and cultural significance; ensuring site connectivity to form an integrated geopark network; and developing essential infrastructure such as trails, signage, and visitor centers. He stressed the importance of identifying areas accessible to the public and those that must remain protected.
The project will also require the establishment of a dedicated management team comprising specialists in geology, environmental science, culture, and tourism, as well as a monitoring system to safeguard against encroachments and damage.
Development plans include creating educational programs, organizing tourism activities, and building international partnerships with other geoparks. Digital tools will also be used for promotion and visitor engagement.
Al-Hajri said the initiative aligns with Kuwait's broader development goals under the "New Kuwait 2035" vision, which aims to diversify the national economy and promote sustainable growth. He noted that Kuwait's commitment to developing its tourism sector is further reflected in its upcoming hosting of the 52nd meeting of the UN Tourism Organization's Regional Commission for the Middle East, to be chaired by Minister of Information and Culture and Minister of State for Youth Affairs, Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi.
UNESCO Global Geoparks are defined as unified geographical areas of international geological significance managed with a holistic approach that integrates conservation, education, and sustainable development. The designation, introduced in 2015, is valid for four years and subject to periodic review.

KUWAIT: A landmark scientific study by researchers from Harvard University, Cambridge University, and other leading institutions worldwide—featuring Kuwaiti researcher Dr Hala Al-Eissa with support from the Kuwait Heart Association—has revealed that the way potatoes are cooked, rather than the potatoes themselves, is the key factor influencing their link to type 2 diabetes. Earlier research hinted at a possible association between potato consumption and diabetes risk but often lacked details on cooking methods or the impact of replacing potatoes with other foods. This new study, published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), analyzed decades of dietary data, distinguishing between preparation styles and substitution choices. The findings show that eating French fries three times a week is linked to a 20 percent higher risk of type 2 diabetes compared to consuming them less than once a week. In contrast, boiled, baked, or mashed potatoes showed no significant risk increase. Researchers explained that the difference lies in preparation: baking, boiling, or cooking with the skin on are healthier methods, preserving nutrients such as fiber, vitamin C, potassium, and vitamin B6. French fries, however, are typically cooked at high temperatures in unhealthy oils and salted heavily, creating harmful compounds. Notably, replacing three weekly servings of French fries with whole grains—such as whole wheat, oats, brown rice, or quinoa—cut the risk of diabetes by up to 19 percent. Substituting all potatoes, including non-fried varieties, with whole grains reduced the risk by 4 percent. 'Our results confirm that potatoes can be part of a healthy diet if prepared properly,' said Dr Al-Eissa, Assistant Professor at Kuwait University's School of Public Health and researcher at Harvard's Department of Nutrition. 'French fries, however, remain a choice that should be limited as much as possible.' Professor Walter Willett, who supervised the study, stressed that dietary guidelines should move beyond broad food categories. 'Not all carbohydrates—and not even all potatoes—are equal,' he said. 'Preparation and substitution matter greatly when shaping public health policies.' The research analyzed data from more than 205,000 participants over nearly 40 years, making it one of the most comprehensive investigations into potatoes and diabetes risk. It was funded by respected bodies including the US National Institutes of Health, the British Medical Council, and, for the first time, the Kuwait Heart Association. Researchers believe that the Kuwait Heart Association's partnership with global institutions like Harvard will pave the way for further collaborations, advancing nutrition-focused research and tackling chronic diseases in Kuwait.

KUWAIT: Acting Director General of Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) Dr Faisal Al-Humaidan announced Tuesday the launch of the Integrated Kuwait Advanced Research for Ultra-Scale Computing System (IKARUS). The system is the first fully integrated national platform in Kuwait for high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI), aimed at supporting the scientific and research communities and strengthening Kuwait's standing in advanced technologies. In a press statement marking the occasion, Al-Humaidan said that IKARUS offers advanced processing and data capabilities, including a computing performance of 244 teraflops (244 trillion calculations per second), with storage capacities of up to 500 terabytes for temporary storage and five petabytes for permanent storage, enabling it to address research challenges in environment, energy, water, petroleum, biomedical engineering, and climate change. He noted that the platform serves as a practical tool for researchers and engineers to tackle large and complex problems and develop solutions with higher efficiency, lower cost, and shorter time compared to traditional computing methods, thus contributing to sustainable development goals and Kuwait?s Vision 2035. Al-Humaidan stressed that IKARUS is not merely a technical project but an investment in Kuwait?s scientific and technological future, opening new horizons for local and international cooperation and reinforcing the country?s role as a regional hub for research and innovation in line with leadership directives toward a knowledge-based economy. For her part, the system's technical lead engineer, Tahani Hussein, said in a similar statement that IKARUS was designed to balance high computing power with energy efficiency, featuring parallel and sequential workload management.
