Nurse died after being hit by car in Crawley, inquest hears
A nurse who was hit by a car while walking with her family died from injuries to her head and spine, an inquest has heard.Dominyka Jonikaite, 25, was struck by a grey BMW 3 Series in London Road, outside Crawley Leisure Park, on 12 April.She was walking with her 12-year-old sister and their cousin, a 19-year-old woman, who were both seriously injured, police previously said.Coroner Joseph Turner told West Sussex Coroner's Court on Thursday that Ms Jonikaite's death was "plainly violent", meaning he was required to open the inquest.
The coroner then adjourned the inquest due to the ongoing police investigation.A post-mortem examination conducted by Dr Ashley Fegan-Earl found the provisional cause of death was craniocervical trauma, the inquest heard.
'Sudden loss'
Born in Lithuania, Ms Jonikaite had graduated with a degree in biomedical science from Bangor University and was working as a blood and transplant nurse, the inquest was told.A GoFundMe page, which has raised more than £16,000, was set up to help her family pay for the funeral and other financial burdens resulting from the crash."This has left a devastating impact on the family who are struggling to come to terms with sudden loss and injuries to their baby girls," a family friend wrote on the fundraising page.The inquest is due to resume on 26 January 2026.Following the incident, a 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and driving while unfit through drugs.He has since been released on bail.

Teenage girl is killed in horror 4WD crash after camping trip with mates goes horribly wrong in long weekend tragedy
A teenage girl has died after a horrific 4WD accident while camping with friends over the long weekend. Caitlyn Bragger, 15, was in a Toyota LandCruiser with five other teens when it crashed near campgrounds at Lake Brockman, south of Perth, 8pm on Saturday. Western Australia Police said the teenagers had been camping in the area while a 16-year-old boy was behind the wheel at the time. Caitlyn died of her injuries at the scene. A 17-year-old boy and the driver were raced to Bunbury Regional Hospital. An 18-year-old boy and two 16-year-old girls also suffered minor injuries. Other nearby campers said they had seen the car's headlights moving through the trees before the crash. They then heard a 'loud bang' and a 'woman screaming'. Caitlyn's family said they were 'broken and in pieces' after losing their 'beautiful girl'. A GoFundMe has since been launched to help the family during their time of need. 'She bought a ray of sunshine everywhere she went, [she was] so outgoing and never left a dull moment in life,' the fundraiser read. 'Known for her kindness, unique sense of humour, and devotion to her family and friends. 'Her family are now left broken and in pieces, lost and confused. No one ever expects something like this to happen, you can't prepare yourself. 'Forever 15, forever in our memory and hearts. Our Angel In Heaven.' Some $9,000 had been raised for the family by Tuesday. Caitlyn's aunt Danica Pierce said her heart was 'seriously struggling to take all this pain'. 'You are going to be so missed, now an angel in heaven but way too young, my heart breaks,' she said. Witnesses at Lake Brockman said the LandCruiser had been crumpled in the crash. One of the boys who rushed to the group's aid, Jett, said it was a confronting sight. 'When I walked up there, there was a massive four-wheel-drive that had been smashed like a tin can, it was scary to see,' he told the ABC. 'There (were) so many people running towards the car and trying to help but there's only so much you can do in that situation.' His friend Rocquo said he managed to pull a rear door from the car to free a male passenger, but felt helpless after seeing the car's roof caved in at its front end. 'It was a shock because you feel hopeless because you can't do anything and we were trying to pick the roof up and we were trying to get everyone out but you can't do anything and it's just sad,' he said. Major Crash investigators continued to examine the scene with WA Police on Monday. Officers appealed for anybody with dash-cam footage of the incident to come forward. In Western Australia, drivers cannot obtain a provisional driving permit until they are 17 years of age.

Greg Monks' family say they believe he 'got lost' in Portugal
Greg Monks was reported missing after leaving the main strip in Albufeira in the Algarve region during the early hours of May 28. The 38-year-old had arrived in the resort town the day before for a stag do. The last official sighting of Greg was at around 3.27am on May 28 as he walked past a property in Cerro de Aguia. According to Google Maps, this area is around an hour and 20 minutes walk from the main strip. Police launched a major search to trace Greg, but on June 4, officers confirmed the body of a man, a 38-year-old British citizen, had been discovered on vacant land in Cerro de Aguia. Greg's mum, girlfriend, and cousin – who had flown out to join the search - will return to Scotland today (June 9) without him, with the repatriation process 'set to take days', the Daily Record reports. Jillian Monks, Greg's sister, stated that the family 'will never truly know the full story' but that they believe he 'got lost'. 'We'll never truly know the full story. But we believe he just got lost and ended up at the wrong place at the wrong time. 'It brings us some comfort knowing that Greg had all his belongings on him. He wasn't robbed, he still had his phone and his wallet. 'He had all his cards and cash.' We previously reported that a GoFundMe page was initially launched to support the search but had instead been updated to help the family bring Greg home and to plan his funeral. It has so far raised £34,000. Ms Monks highlighted that the family now 'has some sense of closure' as they plan to bring her beloved brother home this weekend. Before everyone left the hotel that night, Greg made sure they all had a business card and a map from the hotel to help them find their way home. 'That's the kind of person he was.' Ms Monks further shared her family's anger over how they discovered Greg had died. She commented: 'I knew Greg had been found before my mum and dad were told officially by police in Portugal. Ibrahima Seck, 14, was rushed to hospital but tragically died from his injuries on Sunday evening. He was stabbed outside the Fairway Inn in New Moston, north Manchester, before running to nearby Nevin Road, where neighbours rushed to his aid. As reported by the Manchester Evening News, police closed off the scene and remained in attendance outside the pub on Monday. A property on nearby Warbeck Road has also been sealed off. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Ibrahima's family by Dawn Frimpong. She wrote: "I had the honour of working with this young man, in a school, where he was very well loved. "He was a beautiful soul who had the most infectious smile and you couldn't help but laugh with him. He will be missed by so many. I am attempting to raise as much money as possible for Ibrahima's family so they are not worrying about financial burden at this very difficult time. "We must stand together as communities in times like this and offer support no matter how big or small. Any contribution would be very greatly received." Miss Whittaker told the M.E.N. she taught Ibrahima at Manchester Community Primary Academy for two years. "Ibrahima was the most beautiful boy," she said. "He touched my soul and he had such a beautiful heart. I'm devastated beyond words." A neighbour of Ibrahima's, who did not want to be named, told our sister title that he was the youngest of three siblings. She said: 'He was so young, it's so very, very sad. I cannot understand what this country is coming to.' The woman said the family had lived on her street, a short distance from the Fairway Inn, for a 'couple of years' and she spoke to Ibrahima's parents as neighbours. 'I heard about it last night' she added. 'I heard the helicopter last night then I read about it on the news. Then a police car pulled up and they went inside. That's when we knew. "Another neighbour who knows the family very well said it was the youngest one. I felt sick. So very, very sick. I just couldn't believe that had happened to a family like that. It's so sad, bless them. There's not much we can, just offer our condolences and be there if they need anything.' Tributes have also been left at the scene where Ibrahima was attacked, alongside flowers and messages of support for his family. One note said: "From one mother to another, I know there are no words that can ever ease your pain. "But I pray God gives you the strength to face each new day. Please know that as a community we hold your family in our hearts." Another said: "Things need to change! Knives down, gloves up! Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this horrific time. The boy's family are being supported by our officers and we are determined to give them the answers they deserve.
