Some residents near Miramichi on evacuation alert due to wildfire
Three homes and a cottage are under an evacuation order and another 15 homes are under an alert due to the wildfire burning in the Miramichi area. New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources spokesperson Nick Brown said in an email that no one was home at the four properties when the evacuation order was issued. The province's fire data dashboard says the Oldfield Road fire now spans 340 hectares. Brown said it is difficult to measure the exact size of the fire as smoke has lead to reduced visibility. The fire was first detected on Wednesday. "It did jump Highway 8 and burned about 20 hectares," said Brown on Sunday. The section of Highway 8 between Route 450 and Oldfield Road remains closed. New Brunswick's Natural Resources Minister John Herron said at a news conference on Saturday the fire was "beyond control." He said fire conditions are so extreme that "under the current environment it doesn't matter what we throw at it," he said. The Oldfield Road fire is one of 10 fires burning in the province. A second fire burning out of control is near Canterbury in Carleton County. Brown said it spans about five hectares. There are 40 firefighters on scene. Three of the 10 fires are under control and five are being patrolled. He said that is the final step before a fire is considered extinguished. The New Brunswick government has banned access to all Crown land, restricting fishing, camping, hiking, driving into the woods or using the trail systems. Camping is only allowed on campgrounds and the government has requested private landowners also comply with the restrictions.

Firefighters continue to tackle blazes in Newfoundland
Forest fires have closed roads and caused mandatory evacuations from several Avalon Peninsula communities along Conception Bay North N.L., Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Paul Daly ST. JOHN'S — Firefighting crews continue to reckon with windy conditions as they battle wildfires in Newfoundland. Three ongoing fires in Newfoundland have forced hundreds of people to evacuate their communities and have destroyed an unknown number of structures. Two are on the Avalon Peninsula in the Conception Bay North area and to the south near Holyrood, and a third fire in central Newfoundland, south of Bishop's Falls, was reported on Tuesday afternoon. A provincial spokesperson says firefighters have another challenging day ahead of them Sunday, as wind and dry conditions are expected to allow the fire in the Kingston, N.L., area to grow yet again. That fire grew overnight to reach about 49 square kilometres in size, and the blaze is expected to move toward Ochre Pit Cove by Sunday evening. Four water bombers and four helicopters are focused on tackling the northern edge of the fire today, while ground crews tackle the southern edge of the fire. Meanwhile, the fire near Martin Lake and Great Rattling Brook has hit about 2.55 square kilometres in size, and the Holyrood fire remains unchanged at 0.22 square kilometres in size, and is now classified as being held.
