Race two fightback keeps Hakim Danish on top

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite mixed results over the weekend, Hakim Danish Ramli remains in the driver's seat in the Red Bull Rookies (RBR) Cup title race.
Hakim finished race one at Mugello a disappointing 13th on Saturday (June 21) but bounced back strong to finish second in race two yesterday (June 22).
"My strategy for race one did not work out but Alhamdullilah, everything went well for me in race two," said Hakim today.
"It (race two) was another tough race as there was plenty of overtaking both on the straights and in the corners.
"As usual, the plan was to stay with the front group and work my way up the field. I was able to execute my strategy.
"I am looking forward to my next races at Magny-Cours (July 6) for the FIM JuniorGP World Championship and Sachsenring (July 12-13)."
Hakim who won his first RBR race this season at Aragon (race two) earlier this month, leads the championships on 148 points.
Spaniard Brian Uriarte is second on 116 points while Indonesia's Veda Pratama is third in the championship race on 92 points.
Hakim is currently fourth overall in the FIM Junior GP series on 38 points after three races.
Uriarte leads the FIM Junior GP title race with 75 points.
Hakim is expected to make the step up to the Moto3 World Championship next year.

Marc Marquez battles back to win German MotoGP sprint

SACHSENRING, Germany: Marc Marquez overcame a first turn mistake to land the German MotoGP sprint race on the final lap at a slippery Sachsenring on Saturday. The runaway championship leader started on pole but the Ducati factory rider went wide at the first corner to drop back to fifth, with Marco Bezzecchi inheriting the lead. On lap three Franco Morbidelli suffered a bone-crunching crash at turn eight, the Ducati VR46 rider somersaulting through through the air before landing on the gravel safety run-off area. With 10 laps to go Marquez had crept up into third as Bezzecchi (Aprilia) led by over one second from Fabio Quartararo, Yamaha's former champion who had set off from the third row of the grid. He then went in pursuit of Bezzecchi, hitting the front on the final lap to pull clear and leave the Italian in his wake, Quartararo hanging on for third. "I made a mistake on the exit of turn one, then I lost some positions, but step by step I got some rhythm, I'm happy," said Marquez who is seeking a seventh elite world title to draw level with the legendary Valentino Rossi and move one behind record-holder Giacomo Agostini. Bezzecchi was far from downhearted at coming off second best to the man of the moment. "It's always difficult to lose the battle in the end but I have to say (it was) a very positive day for me," he said. "Hopefully tomorrow will be dry." This was Marquez's 10th Saturday dash win out of 11, and it consolidated his hold on the 2025 world title. The Spaniard increased his lead over younger brother Alex (eighth on Saturday) by 10 points to 78. Marquez senior will be hot favourite for Sunday's main race as he targets a seventh perfect weekend of victories in the sprint and race this year. The grid will be missing Maverick Vinales, the KTM-Tech 3 rider forced to pull out after suffering a fracture to his left shoulder from a heavy fall in qualifying.

Sinner vs Alcaraz Wimbledon final: Redemption or three-peat?

FOR Jannik Sinner, Sunday's Wimbledon final offers a chance of redemption; for Carlos Alcaraz it is an opportunity to join an elite club of men who have won the title three years in succession. There are many other plot lines but above all the showdown will help to cement a rivalry that could dominate tennis for a decade. Fears of a void in the wake of the golden era of Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic were real -- surely nothing would ever be the same again after an age in which they took the sport to unimaginable heights. From 2003 to 2023, the trio accumulated 66 Grand Slam titles between them and their rivalries were complex and compelling in equal measure. Djokovic is not done yet but a new era has begun and it promises to be just as spectacular as the previous one. Between them, Alcaraz and Sinner have shared the last six Grand Slam titles and their mesmeric clash last month in the longest-ever French Open final is being touted as one of the greatest of all time. The Spaniard came back from two sets down and saved three match points on his way to a fifth Grand Slam title, in the process taking his head-to-head record over Sinner to 8-4, including winning all of the last four. It was a painful defeat for world number one Sinner but he has not had to wait long to try to set the record straight. 'He is the favourite. He won here two times in a row. He's again in the final. It's very tough to beat him on grass but I like these challenges,' the 23-year-old Sinner said of Alcaraz after beating Djokovic to reach his first Wimbledon final. 'This is the second consecutive Grand Slam that we are in the final and playing each other, which is great from my side. I believe it's good for the sport.' Sinner's three Grand Slam titles have all come on hard courts, two in Melbourne and one in New York. Alcaraz's major titles have come on all the sport's surfaces, suggesting a more complete game, but Sinner's performance against Ben Shelton in the quarters and Djokovic in the semis, show just how suited his game is to grass. His laser-like ground strokes, powerful serve and his ability to turn defence into attack in the blink of an eye were all on show and Alcaraz knows he faces a challenge every bit as tough as Roland Garros on Centre Court on Sunday. The only other time they have met on grass was at Wimbledon in 2022 when Sinner won their last-16 clash in four sets. 'I expect that on Sunday, just to be on the limit, to be on the line,' the 22-year-old Alcaraz, who is on a 24-match winning streak, said. 'I just hope not to be five hours and a half on court again. But if have to, I will.' Should Alcaraz prevail he would join Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Djokovic as the only men to win the Wimbledon title three years in a row and he would also surpass Nadal's two Wimbledon crowns. Both players have shown vulnerability during the fortnight. Alcaraz flirted with a shock first-round defeat against Italian Fabio Fognini, needing five sets. Sinner trailed by two sets against Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth-round after hurting his elbow, but was reprieved when the Bulgarian retired hurt. Sinner, the third Italian to reach a Wimbledon singles final after Matteo Berrettini in 2021 and Jasmine Paolini last year, has looked unhindered by his elbow despite wearing a compression sleeve on his right arm in his last two matches. 'I think we are handling this small problem at the moment very well,' he said. So the stage is set for a fitting end to a sun-filled Wimbledon fortnight and if Sunday's duel is even remotely as compelling as the one in Paris, we are in for a treat. - Reuters

Marc Marquez secures seventh pole at German MotoGP

CHAMPIONSHIP leader Marc Marquez claimed pole position in qualifying at the Sachsenring on Saturday for the German MotoGP and sprint race. In rainy conditions the Ducati factory rider will start from the front of the grid for the seventh time this season and for the eighth time out of 10 in the elite category at one of his favourite circuits. Alongside the Spaniard on the front row for Saturday's 15-lap sprint and main race 24 hours later were France's Johann Zarco (Honda-LCR) and Marco Bezzecchi (ITA/Aprilia). This was Marquez's seventh pole from 11 this season and he will be hot favourite to steal the show once again at the Sachsenring where he is targeting a ninth success from 10 grands prix. Alex Marquez, placed second in the riders' standings, 68 points behind his older brother, is on the second row. Former two-time world champion Francesco Bagnaia, however, had a torrid time setting only the 11th fastest time, relegating the other Ducati factory rider back to the fourth row of the grid. - AFP
