YouTuber Paul cruises past Chavez Jr
ANAHEIM, United States: YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul cruised to victory over Mexico's Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on Saturday in a one-sided cruiserweight bout in California.
Paul, whose last fight was a controversial clash with 58-year-old former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson in November, dominated from the outset to win by unanimous decision.
The 28-year-old influencer, who has earned millions from a string of lucrative contests in a ring career that has spanned 13 fights, had too much speed and power for Chavez Jr.
The three judges at ringside scored the 10-round fight 99-91, 97-93, 98-92 in Paul's favour.
Chavez Jr, the 39-year-old son of Mexican boxing great Julio Cesar Chavez, barely looked capable of mustering a response during a one-sided bout.
Chavez Jr failed to land a single punch in the opening round, a pattern that followed the remainder of the contest, with Paul easily outscoring the veteran of 63 professional fights.
Paul, who reportedly pocketed around US$40 million for his made-for-Netflix fight with Tyson last year, received around US$300,000 guaranteed from Saturday's bout.

Chelsea to sign Brighton forward Joao Pedro
LONDON: Chelsea's forward options could be bolstered by the time they face Palmeiras in the Club World Cup quarter-finals on Friday after reportedly agreeing a deal with Brighton for Joao Pedro. The Athletic reported the Brazilian international is on his way to the United States for a medical before joining up with the Chelsea squad after terms were struck for a transfer in excess of £50 million ($69 million). A successful Korean case is in reference to world No. 1 women's singles shuttler An Se-young. The 23-year-old is close to signing a lucrative sponsorship deal with Yonex following the Korean Badminton Association (KBA)'s change in policy in May, allowing national players to sign personal gear endorsement deals. Se-young is on the verge of agreeing a contract with Yonex reportedly worth around US$1.44mil per year. It's learnt that the sports equipment giants had to battle with another brand for the reigning world and Olympic champion's signature. While Se-young's contract situation seems to be nearly resolved and is proving to be a win-win deal for the player and association, Malaysia's top women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah have yet to sign a new deal with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). World No. 3 Pearly-Thinaah's contract expired last December but they are yet to come to an agreement with BAM on new deals. BAM do not allow their players to have personal sponsors (for same attire for instance), meaning that the pair could turn independent to seek better deals if they are not happy with the terms offered by the national body. For example, men's singles player Lee Zii Jia left BAM in 2022 and turned independent after one of his requests, which was to have his own sponsors, was rejected. While Yonex is BAM's main sponsor, Zii Jia went on to sign a new deal with Victor after leaving the national team. Will Pearly-Thinaah decide to do the same? Should BAM follow KBA and change their policy to keep their top players happy or should they stick to their own way? While former national shuttler Kwan Yoke Meng, who coached Pearly and Thinaah during their junior days, was reluctant to comment on the pair's contract issue, he hopes that the duo remain in BAM. 'I'm not in a position to comment on Pearly-Thinaah's contracts as I am no longer their coach. I don't know the inside story,' said Yoke Meng. 'For me, I would prefer that they stay in BAM. They have a better chance to maintain their standards due the facilities and sparing partners available to them in BAM.'

The world No. 3 Pearly-Thinaah have still yet to sign new deals with BAM after their contracts expired last December. It is learnt that the BA of Malaysia have had discussions but yet to finalise the contract matters with the reigning Thailand Open champions Pearly-Thinaah. It seems the pair, who reached the semi-finals of the Paris Olympic Games last year, have been offered a better deal outside and could turn professionals. Meanwhile, according to reports that has been circulating recently, the 23-year-old Se-young is on the verge of signing a deal worth around US$1.44 million per year. The Korean Badminton Association (KBA) allow national players to sign individual sponsorships, a landmark decision which they made in May this year. Earlier, Yonex had been fighting with Li Ning to secure the world No. 1 Se-young under their banner. Se-young is in high demand after winning the Paris Olympic gold last year and the world title in 2023 and is currently the best player in the circuit.
