Follow live coverage as Plymouth Argyle face Cardiff City in the Championship today.
An increasingly competitive second tier in English football remains an intense and exciting competition, with the prize of a place in the Premier League on offer at the end of the season.
Relegation from the top flight last term means Luton, Burnley and Sheffield United are all back in the second tier this term and will be expected to push for play-off spots again at least, but so too will Norwich City, an improving Coventry and beaten play-off finalists Leeds United. At the other end of the table, Wayne Rooney is aiming to revive Plymouth's fortunes after they narrowly avoided relegation last year, with Portsmouth and Derby the teams promoted from League One along with play-off final winners Oxford.

Thomas Frank appointed new Tottenham head coach on three-year deal after club paid hefty release clause to lure him from Brentford and replace sacked Ange Postecoglou
Thomas Frank has been confirmed as Tottenham 's new head coach on a three-year contract. Frank is moving across London after nine years at Brentford to succeed Ange Postecoglou, sacked last Friday, 16 days after his team won the Europa League. 'In Thomas we are appointing one of the most progressive and innovative head coaches within the game,' said a Spurs spokesman. 'He has a proven track record in player and squad development and we look forward to him leading the team as we prepare for the season ahead.' Brentford's director of football Phil Giles issued heartfelt thanks to Frank for his impact on the club he led to promotion in 2021. 'It has been a pleasure working alongside Thomas,' said Giles. 'From the moment he replaced Dean Smith, he understood what we were trying to build and his wisdom, coaching ability and emotional intelligence have helped transform the club. 'There have been so many special moments with Thomas and nobody will ever forget the day at Wembley for the play-off final or that emotional first Premier League game against Arsenal. 'But it's not just what you see on the pitch. He forged a special connection with our fans, helped develop and improve players, and was instrumental in implementing the culture that has seen Brentford go from strength to strength. 'However, just as when a player leaves, it provides an opportunity for someone else to come in and make their own impact. 'We will never forget Thomas, but now it is time to thank him and take the next steps in our journey with a new leader who we believe can be just as successful and influential.' Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy had identified 51-year-old Frank as the man he wanted before sacking Postecoglou last Friday and has spent most of this week negotiating compensation for Brentford for him and several of his coaching staff. Justin Cochrane will join Frank at Spurs although Brentford tried their utmost to keep him the 43-year-old, who spent nine years coaching career in Tottenham's academy. Cochrane, who joined the Bees three years ago from Manchester United is on Thomas Tuchel's England staff and so highly rated that Brentford considered him among the candidates for the head coach role. Also moving across London from the Getch Community Stadium are fitness coach Chris Haslam and analyst Joe Newton. Andreas Georgson will join the coaching team from Manchester United. Postecoglou's assistant coaches Mile Jedinak, Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo have all left Spurs with Matt Wells and goalkeeping coach Rob Burch remaining. Postecoglou's success in delivering silverware, which he promised he would, means that the Dane will take charge of Tottenham in the Champions League, and he will want a squad that is able to compete at the top level. Reports had claimed Tottenham were looking to hijack Manchester United's push to sign Frank's golden boy Bryan Mbeumo from his now former club. However, sources have disclosed that Spurs are 'highly unlikely' to enter the race for the forward, who scored 20 goals in the Premier League last term. Last month, Mail Sport's Oliver Holt played a couple of sets of padel at Brentford's Osterley facility with Frank and assistant first-team coach Kevin O'Connor. During their day together, Frank explained what it takes to build a successful culture at a football club - like he has at Brentford and continue to improve it one step after another. 'We stand on the shoulders of others,' Frank told Mail Sport in an interview last month. 'And we build on foundations they have built for us. We need to acknowledge that every single time. 'It's all about the ego. So how fragile is it or how big is it? Some people need reassurance all the time and to say, 'The reason I'm so good is because of me and has nothing to do with these top players and good staff'. It depends who you are. 'So you need to believe in your own skill set, but be humble enough to know there's a lot of hard work and you're not the only one and all that. So I'm confident in myself and what I'm capable of doing. Also humble enough to know I can do nothing alone. No one can. 'Look, if you ask whether I'm tough, I think I'm extremely resilient. And I think we've all got a dark side. I've got five per cent dark side in me. Even my wife says that. 'You need that dark side, to have an edge and I have an edge. I'm extremely competitive, very determined, and you don't survive in this business if you're not tough.'

Liverpool 'contacted' over Darwin Nunez sale but Man Utd star could ruin plans
Darwin Nunez has been heavily linked with an exit from Liverpool after falling down the pecking order under manager Arne Slot, who started the Uruguayan forward just seven times in the 2024-25 Premier League season Liverpool have reportedly been contacted by Serie A side Napoli over striker Darwin Nunez, according to reports, but their interest in Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund could complicate the deal. Nunez joined Liverpool for £85million in 2022 but has had mixed success at Anfield and fell down the pecking order under manager Arne Slot this season. The Uruguayan has been strongly linked with an exit from Liverpool after he made just eight starts in the Premier League under Slot and had to settle for appearances in cup competitions as he scored just seven times in total. The 25-year-old will be desperate for regular game time ahead of Uruguay possibly appearing at the 2026 World Cup next summer. Now, according to Football Italia, Napoli have reportedly reached out to Liverpool over a move. It says the club have promised boss Antonio Conte a raft of new signings after they won the Serie A title and the Italian is eager to secure another striker that can compete with Romelu Lukaku up front. The report adds Napoli are "pushing" for Nunez, but might struggle to agree a fee given that Liverpool paid so much for his services three years ago and won't want to take a big loss on profit. Nunez scored 34 goals in 41 appearances for Benfica in his final season in 2021-22 but only managed 15 in his debut season. He then scored 18 in 2023-24 in Jurgen Klopp's last campaign before opportunities began drying up under Slot. It goes on to say that Napoli could turn to United star Hojlund as an alternative, which would be a blow for Liverpool as they look to balance the books in the event that they sign Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz - who is being priced at £126m. A move to Napoli for Hojlund would see him return to Italy's top flight two years after he left Atalanta in a £72m deal. Hojlund has failed to impress since arriving at Old Trafford and managed only four goals in the Premier League last season, having scored ten in the previous campaign. Napoli have already been quick to make their first signing of the summer transfer window after announcing the arrival of Kevin de Bruyne on a free transfer from Manchester City. De Bruyne was given a hero's welcome after jetting into Naples - and the club revealed his signing by uploading a picture of the Belgian star sitting on the throne, with the caption: "King Kev is here." Gyokeres transfer prediction made by Alan Shearer amid Arsenal and Man Utd links
Viktor Gyokeres finds himself in the middle of a transfer tug of war between Premier League rivals Manchester United and Arsenal and Alan Shearer has shared his thoughts on where could end up Alan Shearer believes Viktor Gyokeres could still sign for Manchester United despite his bitter transfer saga. The Red Devils have long been linked with a move for the Sporting Lisbon forward. He was identified as a major target for United following their goalscoring woes last season. Links intensified following the arrival of former Sporting boss Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford. Premier League rivals Arsenal are also admirers, with Mikel Arteta keen on adding to his attacking options. And giving his verdict on the battle between the two sides, Shearer thinks that United will eventually be successful due to Gyokeres' prior relationship with the Swedish hitman. Speaking to Betfair, he said: 'They've got Matheus Cunha in and we're going to see a big turnover of players in the next two months at United. They have to get a number of players out, and to do that they have to get a number of players in for that club to have a refresh. 'It's been so bad for so long, but everything came together in a bad way which they didn't want to see this season for Man United. It's a huge pre-season for them in terms of who they're getting in and out. 'The Bryan Mbeumo transfer isn't done yet and I know that other clubs were in for him including Newcastle. Whether Spurs try to hijack that if they get Thomas Frank in, which it seems that'll be the case. 'On Viktor Gyokeres, I'm not surprised at all if they get him because of his work with Sporting and Ruben Amorim before, I think that was always going to be the case. 'They're not in Europe this year, they're not in the Champions League and they're going to have to pay huge wages to get the players and tempt them away from other clubs that are going to be interested in them.' Gyokeres' future has taken a number of turns over the past week as both United and Arsenal attempt to win the race for his signature. Reports previously claimed that he was willing to go on strike to force a move away from Sporting after they went back on their word to sell him for a modest fee. Sporting Lisbon president Frederico Varandas then broke his silence by claiming that his side would not be bullied into selling their star forward. Gyokeres himself has now spoken, having penned an angry statement on social media. Writing on his Instagram story, Gyokeres wrote: 'There is a lot of talk at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right.' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
