Opinion: In Gaza, bread is now a treasure and hunger a daily killer
Among the first regions cut off from aid and plunged into severe food shortages, we endured the initial painful period of starvation from November 2023 - just a month into the genocide - until a temporary truce in June 2024.
When the flour ran out, we resorted to baking bread from animal fodder and rancid white flour, just to survive.
We lived on what little we had saved. We searched the destroyed homes of neighbours and relatives who had fled, sometimes finding a few cans of peas, chickpeas, fava beans or some flour left behind.
But all of that ran out in the early months. The war has now dragged on for more than 665 days, and everything has been taken from us.

UAE conducts 60th airdrop of aid, delivers 22 medical trucks into Gaza
The United Arab Emirates continues its dedicated humanitarian efforts to support the brotherly Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. On Saturday, the UAE carried out the 60th airdrop of humanitarian aid as part of the "Operation Birds of Goodness'', which falls under the larger "Operation Chivalrous Knight 3'. This operation was conducted in cooperation with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and with the participation of France, Germany, and Italy. These airdrop missions aim to deliver critical relief to areas that are inaccessible by land due to current field conditions. Each drop includes a variety of food items and urgent humanitarian supplies. Humanitarian aid is airdropped to Palestinians over Gaza. WAM With today's operation, the total amount of aid airdropped has exceeded 3,807 tonnes, comprising various food and relief materials designated to assist Palestinians in the most severely affected areas. In addition, the UAE delivered 22 medical aid trucks today containing medicines and medical supplies, coordinated with the World Health Organisation (WHO), to support the healthcare sector and meet the basic needs of operational hospitals in Gaza. Four workers dead in Japan after manhole fall
3 Aug 2025 10:29 TOKYO (AFP)Four workers have died in Japan after falling into a manhole near Tokyo as they inspected sewage pipes, authorities said incident comes after a huge sinkhole swallowed a truck driver near the capital in January following a road collapse atttributed to corroded sewage pipes, which in turn sparked a nationwide workers -- all men in their fifties -- were checking pipes in the city of Gyoda north of Tokyo on Saturday when one fell down the manhole, followed by three more who tried to save him, the local fire department told department said rescuers detected hydrogen sulfide -- a gas toxic in high concentrations -- coming out of the manhole."Detailed circumstances leading up to the accident are still unknown, so it's too early for us to say anything about our responsibility," a Gyoda city official said on condition of four workers were retrieved and taken to the hospital where they were pronounced dead, according to local media 10 workers were at the scene of the inspection, ordered to clean the pipes of wastewater and sludge if necessary. In May Japanese rescuers recovered the body of the dead 74-year-old truck driver months after he was swallowed by the road collapse in the city of Yashio.
