Hong Kong qualify for World Cup for first time
The Hong Kong side has got to the last stage of qualifying for the last two World Cups only to fall short but will now take their place at the expanded 24-team showpiece tournament in Australia in 2027.
"There has been an enormous commitment from the team over the last 12 months," head coach Andrew Douglas said in a statement.
"We are delighted with the improvements they made match by match... I'm particularly pleased with how the players stayed together as a group and how they held their nerve under pressure to come through a tough qualification decider away from home."
The United Arab Emirates beat Sri Lanka 29-21 in Colombo on Friday to finish second in the championship and will play off against an African nation in July for a spot at the final World Cup qualification tournament.
Hong Kong are only the second team from Asia to get to the World Cup after Japan, who have already qualified after finishing third in their pool at the 2023 tournament in France.

Moments later, Felix thought he had grabbed a second, but his drilled shot was ruled out by VAR for a Ronaldo foul on Fabinho in the build-up. Al-Nassr advance to the final, where they will face the winner of the second semi-final between Al-Qadsiah and Al-Ahli on Wednesday.

Gill and Bumrah in India's Asia Cup squad, Jaiswal ignored
NEW DELHI :Defending champions India named top order batter Shubman Gill and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in their Twenty20 squad on Tuesday for next month's Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and middle order batter Shreyas Iyer, however, could not make the cut in the 15-member squad led by Suryakumar Yadav. India's test captain Gill has not played a T20 International since July last year when he was Suryakumar's deputy on the tour of Sri Lanka. "That's where we started a new cycle," Suryakumar, who took over T20 captaincy from Rohit Sharma after India won the 20-overs World Cup title last year, told reporters. "After that he got busy with all the test series and he didn't get an opportunity to play T20s because he was busy playing test cricket and Champions Trophy. "So he's there in the squad and we're happy to have him." India also included Bumrah, whose workload has been a major concern for the team think-tank, which played him in three of the five tests in England earlier this year. With three opening options in Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson - India could not accommodate Jaiswal. "With regard to Yashasvi, it's just unfortunate again," chief selector Ajit Agarkar said. "There's Abhishek Sharma, what he's done over the last year or so, plus he can bowl a little bit, he gives us that option if required. Pakistan ignore Babar and Rizwan for Asia Cup
LAHORE, Pakistan :Former Pakistan captains Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan could not make the cut for the Asia Cup Twenty20 tournament in the United Arab Emirates next month. The 17-member team, led by Salman Agha, will play a T20 tri-series in the UAE featuring the hosts as well as Afghanistan in their buildup to the Asia Cup, the Pakistan Cricket Board said in a statement on Sunday. Babar and Rizwan were not picked for the T20 leg of Pakistan's West Indies tour this month, where they were beaten 2-1 by the hosts. Pacer Shaheen Afridi has been retained while opener Fakhar Zaman, who suffered a hamstring injury in the West Indies, has been included for the Sept 9-28 tournament. Pakistan will begin their Group A campaign against Oman in Dubai on September 12 before meeting arch-rivals India at the same venue two days later.
