Hearts 'gave Gordon blank cheque to reject Celtic'

BBC News22-03-2025
Former Heart of Midlothian owner Vladimir Romanov has claimed he handed Craig Gordon a blank cheque to reject a move to Celtic before the "psychologically weak" Scotland goalkeeper's eventual record-breaking £9m transfer to Sunderland. The revelation comes in the Russian businessman's first UK interview in more than a decade as part of BBC Scotland's "Romanov: Czar of Hearts" podcast series. In the special bonus edition, "From Russia With Love", Romanov revisits his claim that he was once offered the chance to buy Liverpool, repeats his belief that all Scottish referees support either Celtic or Rangers, and says George Burley walked away from the club rather than be sacked as manager. He recalled the "revolution" inside the Hearts dressing-room in October 2006 when captain Steven Pressley, Paul Hartley and Gordon went public with the squad's unhappiness at the Lithuanian-based owner's methods.
Romanov claims the trio had previously been offered deals by Celtic and wanted to move to the Glasgow club along with manager Burley and two other players - Rudi Skacel and Roman Bednar.Pressley and Hartley did eventually join Celtic, but Romanov claims he told Gordon: "Your contract is running out and I know Celtic has made you an offer, but you'll end up being their second-choice goalkeeper, not the first. "If you stay and sign with us, I promise you'll play in the English league. He laughed, not taking me seriously. So, I said, 'If you don't believe me, here's a blank contract. Write down the amount you want.'"Gordon wrote down a very large sum - something unheard of at Hearts and all of Scottish football. I looked at it, signed it, and handed it back. That's how we managed to keep him."Romanov claims he had a buyer lined up for Gordon at the end of the season with "a rough valuation" in mind for the then 24-year-old."Gordon had incredible abilities, but he required a very careful approach," he said. "Psychologically, he was weak - if things didn't go well, he'd get physically sick, sometimes even vomit. "He needed delicate handling. Despite all that, he was an exceptionally talented player. Ultimately, I sold him for £9m - at the time, it was the highest fee ever paid for a goalkeeper in Britain."Hearts say Gordon, who returned to Hearts in 2020 after eventually joining Celtic, did not wish to comment on Romanov's claims.Burley and Hearts "mutually agreed" to part ways in October 2005 despite the side sitting unbeaten at the top of the Scottish league table, but Romanov claims that "even a housewife" could have achieved those results "under my leadership".He claimed that Burley "had a heavy drinking problem" and "ran away" when told he could stay in charge if he tackled that problem.Burley's assistant at the time, Simon Hunt, disputed Romanov's claims about the manager's drinking.

Dundee Utd 2-3 Hearts: Stuart Findlay goal machine, Zander Clark culpable, Jambos top of SPFL Premiership

A pulsating encounter at Tannadice Park finished 3-2 to Hearts thanks to Stuart Findlay's dramatic stoppage-time header. The defender nodded two of his team's three goals as they remained joint-top of the Premiership after two matches. However, while Monday's 2-0 victory over Aberdeen was comfortable, Hearts were made to work until the dying seconds for three points on Tayside. They led 1-0 through Lawrence Shankland's penalty before conceding two first-half goals to United's Croatian winger Ivan Dolcek. Goalkeeper Zander Clark was culpable on both occasions, most notably the second, but centre-back Findlay bailed him out. After scoring a fine header to secure the draw, Findlay then followed up with a winner to underline the fact he is fast becoming a goal machine for the Edinburgh club with four goals in five games. Hearts forced United back throughout the first half and would have felt aggrieved being 2-1 down at the break. They responded positively with Findlay's equaliser and refused to accept a draw, believing they could force a winner. United were always a threat due to an imposing forward line of Zach Sapsford and Owen Stirton, who ruffled opponents on a few occasions during the afternoon. Dolcek was one of their best players on the day at left wing-back. This fixture was moved to Sunday following United's progress to the UEFA Conference League third qualifying round. The first leg of that tie took place in Vienna on Thursday as the Tayside club earned a creditable 2-2 draw. Hearts visited Tannadice ahead of the second leg looking to build on their solid opening Premiership win against Aberdeen. They arrived without injured Norwegian right-back Christian Borchgrevink, while the hosts were missing captain Ross Graham, plus new arrivals Isaac Pappoe and Dario Naamo. With 2,802 travelling fans added to a healthy home support in a 10,874 crowd, there was no lack of energy or noise inside Tannadice. The Hearts followers acclaimed Portuguese forward Caudio Braga during the early stages with their adapted version of Queen's 1984 hit 'Radio Ga Ga'. He would soon have a couple of attempts at goal. The first shot of note, though, arrived on 10 minutes when United's Vicko Sevelj dispatched a bouncing effort from 22 yards. The Hearts goalkeeper Zander Clark produced a good save low to his right. The visitors continued applying pressure and the sight of left wing-back Harry Milne executing a cheeky 'rabona' nutmeg on Miller Thomson brought further joy for those in the away end. Their team moved ahead minutes later. Iurie Iovu held Stuart Findlay back as Milne's corner dropped at United's back post, and referee David Dickinson pointed to the spot. Shankland's cool finish from 12 yards sent goalkeeper Yevheni Kucherenko the wrong way. Hearts' lead lasted less than two minutes. When Frankie Kent was penalised for fouling Stirton, Dolcek stepped up to angle a superb free-kick high into the top corner. Clark got a hand to the ball but could not stop the equaliser. When the hosts moved ahead four minutes before half-time, Clark again failed to stop the ball. This time, Dolcek took a throw-in and was untracked as he then galloped in behind the Hearts defence in the inside-left channel. Panutche Camara's quick through ball found the Croatian for a low drive which ricocheted off the keeper at his near post and bounced up into the net. Hearts had controlled much of the first half, attacking relentlessly down their left through Milne, Braga and Blair Spittal. United's doggedness and opportunism paid off as they led 2-1 into the second half. They tended to attack down the Hearts right in behind Forrest - the area where Dolcek sprinted into to score their second goal. Visiting head coach Derek McInnes replaced Forrest and Kent with Alexandros Kyziridis and Michael Steinwender during the break - switching from a 3-5-2 to a 4-4-2 formation - and saw his team draw level just before the hour mark. Milne's outswinging corner was met by Findlay's towering header, which soared high into the corner of Kucherenko's net. The defender's impact has been impressive since moving on loan to Tynecastle from Oxford United. His leveller created the potential for a dramatic ending in the Tayside sunshine, although Hearts seemed determined to make life more difficult for themselves with some erratic defending and poor distribution in their own third of the field during the second period. Teenage striker James Wilson replaced Braga late in the game as Hearts pursued a winner. In stoppage-time, substitute Sabah Kerjota's deflected effort forced Kucherenko into an important save low to his left. The Albanian delivered the resultant corner for Findlay to head goalwards, but Craig Sibbald cleared off his own goal line. Just as a draw seemed inevitable, Findlay intervened again in the 94th minute. Kyziridis whipped a corner towards the near post and the defender stooped for a diving, glancing header on the corner of the six-yard post. The ball flew through a collection of bodies to land in the net and maintain Hearts' 100 per cent record at the start of the new season. They now have six competitive wins from six matches under McInnes' management. The bedlam which erupted in the away end illustrated their supporters' delight. Here are the Hearts player ratings from Tannadice: 1 . GK: Zander Clark 5/10 Didn't look comfortable. Beaten by Dolcek's free-kick equaliser even though he got a hand to the ball. Will be even more disappopinted not to stop Dolcek's second goal at his near post. | SNS Group Photo Sales 2 . RCB: Frankie Kent 5/10 Conceded the free-kick which led to the equaliser, won headers and tackles, but replaced at half-time as Hearts' formation changed. | SNS Group Photo Sales 3 . CB: Craig Halkett 8/10 Strong and commanding in the centre of tha back line. Hearts' best defender. | SNS Group Photo Sales 4 . LCB: Stuart Findlay 9/10 Fouled by Iovu at the penalty. Fed Milne down the left repeatedly to start attacks. Great header to make it 2-2. Even better glancing goal for the winner. | SNS Group Photo Sales

Manager Rodgers said after the game: "He did well to come out for the second half, he was sick at half time. "He was throwing up all over the changing room, thankfully I wasn't in there at the time! "He's come out, we've given him 15 minutes or so and then took him off but he's a top player. "He's only going to get fitter, stronger and better." It's not yet known what caused the sickness but the left-back is seemingly doing well. When asked what the problem was, Rodgers replied: "Not sure. Might be a wee bug of some sort, maybe something he's drank of some sort. "Thankfully he's OK now." Auston Trusty replaced the 28-year-old shortly after the visitors' second goal to see out the victory. That win takes Celtic four points clear at the top with Rangers taking just two points from the opening two league fixtures. I'm a Celtic-daft bride – I called off the big day but I still celebrated in my wedding dress at Parkhead Due to this, bookmakers Paddy Power have ALREADY paid out on bets for the Parkhead team to win the Premiership outright, declaring they've 'seen enough'. The Irish-based company often take aim at the Gers in social media gimmicks, and fan reaction has been mixed this time. One commented: 'Wee bit later than expected but congrats on the pay out troops.' Another said: 'Took a week longer than expected.' And a third added: 'Paddy Power know the script.' While a fourth laughed: 'Easiest bet you will do every year. Money back before the kids go back to school.' Another commented: "This is so embarrassing for Rangers," while one added: 'Rangers are terrible, they won't even get 2nd. Hibs or Hearts to finish behind Celtic.' And another noted: 'Scottish football, just an absolute waste of everyone's time and money.' Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Celtic ease past Aberdeen but Brendan Rodgers wants more support for Adam Idah

The Celtic manager, Brendan Rodgers, predicts Adam Idah will be better if he can get some competition up front. The champions eased to victory at Aberdeen thanks to goals in each half from the midfielders Benjamin Nygren and Reo Hatate, but Idah struggled to make an impact in the centre-forward position. The 24-year-old was expected to kick on after Kyogo Furuhashi left in January, but Daizen Maeda took on the mantle of Celtic's main goalscorer after moving inside from a wide position, although the Irishman still finished on 20 goals. Given Celtic have since lost Jota to a long-term injury and sold Nicolas Kühn, Maeda has been needed out wide, while Idah has been handed a chance to seize the No 9 role. 'There's no doubt that we need to reinforce the top line,' Rodgers said. 'I'm really pleased with where we are structurally in defensive numbers. We've got a squad from our back line to midfield that can cope domestically and cope in the European competition. So I'm really pleased with that aspect. But I think we need competition at the top end of the field. 'For Adam, he's a big, honest boy. He was at his best here when was really challenging with Kyogo for the position and that's something that is important for us to get. But in the meantime, he will work hard and he'll always be that reference for us.' Asked if Idah needed a goal, Rodgers said: 'Listen, you're a striker at Celtic, you have to be strong mentally, you've got to score goals, of course. But I've a lot of faith in him. He really needs that real competition beside him. And I think that's when you then get the most out of him. 'He didn't quite score, but he worked very hard and he's given his all and it will get better as the season goes on.' Celtic's three goals this season have all come from midfielders, with Luke McCowan's late winner against St Mirren followed by Nygren getting off the mark for the club. The 24-year-old netted 15 goals for Nordsjaelland in the Danish top flight last season as well as scoring twice in his first four internationals for Sweden. Rodgers said: 'He's a player that can play as an eight, a 10, he can also play off the side. But his intuition is to get in the box and score goals and that's why we've brought him in.' To come and play with that authority and personality in the game, that was pleasing.' Aberdeen made a bright start, but Celtic took full control before Nygren's 27th-minute opener. The Dons manager, Jimmy Thelin, said: 'The way we defended in the first half and how we created the transitions was okay. 'The problem we have right now is the last pass and last decision when we arrive in an attacking position. And we are not arriving there enough to really hurt them.' Thelin would not comment on reports that Aberdeen are closing in on a deal to sign the 21-year-old Milan striker Marko Lazetic on a free transfer. But he added: 'Everybody's working really hard to find the right player and bring him to Aberdeen so let's see what's going to happen.'
