Special schemes being implemented for welfare of transgender people: Tamil Nadu govt
Several special schemes are being implemented for the development of transgender people, which include issuing house site pattas, subsidies to start business, and pension for over 1,700 destitute transgender persons, the Tamil Nadu government said on Sunday. Chief Minister M K Stalin's scheme to provide subsidies for transgender people to start businesses is aimed at economically uplifting and providing them with recognition in society, they added.
Through this scheme, a subsidy of up to Rs 50,000 is being provided according to the needs of the business they start. "Under this scheme, Rs 1 crore has been allocated every year since 2021, and so far, 811 transgender people have benefited from the self-employment subsidy," the government said.
Through the Transgender Welfare Board, house site pattas were being provided to beneficiaries, and subsidies were also being extended to start businesses. Organising self-help groups and giving them training and providing sewing machines were among the other assistance measures, an official release said.

Issuing medical insurance cards, identity cards and family cards, and providing pensions to destitute transgender people over 40 years of age forms part of the overall support system for them.
Previously, a monthly pension of Rs 1,000 was provided to destitute transgender people over 40 years of age, who were unable to earn any income.

Chief Minister Stalin increased the pension amount to Rs 1,500. Under this scheme, Rs 1.53 crore was sanctioned to provide pension to 1,311 transgender people during the 2022-23 financial year, and Rs 2.49 crore was sanctioned to provide pension to 1,482 transgender people in 2023-24.
For the 2024-25 financial year, Rs 2.70 crore was allocated for providing pension to 1,599 transgender people. For the financial year 2025-26, Rs 3 crore has been allocated, and it will benefit 1,760 transgender people.
In order to ensure the transgender people's welfare and improve their quality of life, former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi established a welfare board on April 15, 2008 and launched welfare measures.
Chief Minister M K Stalin reconstituted the Transgender Welfare Board this year with 15 official members and 13 non-official members (10 transgender women, 1 transgender man, 1 intersex person, and 1 woman member).
A mobile application "Thirunangai" was launched in 2021 and the registration process was simplified for getting identity cards, and as a result, 10,153 transgender people have received identity cards.
Special Award for Transgender People, which carries a cheque for Rs 1lakh and a certificate (given every year on April 15th, observed as Transgender Day) for outstanding service for the welfare of transgender people forms part of other initiatives for the development of the transgenders.
The chief minister ordered that from 2024-2025, all expenses, including tuition and hostel fees, for transgender persons who wish to pursue higher education will be provided through the welfare board. For this scheme, a fund of Rs 2 crore was allocated for the year 2024-25. Under this scheme, the tuition fees for 4 transgender persons have been paid through the Transgender Welfare Board, the government underscored.
"The transgender people greatly benefited from various schemes of the Dravidian model government, including starting self-employment with subsidies," the release said.

New Delhi: India is set to bring home a deadly new shield, the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) system, in a deal worth Rs 30,000 crore. It is fast and smart. And it kills moving threats in seconds. It is a mobile missile defence system designed to track and destroy enemy aircraft and drones in real-time. It reacts quickly, locks onto fast-moving targets and takes them out in a flash. This new system will be deployed near the Pakistan and China borders. Three full regiments will protect the skies. Sources say the Ministry of Defence is ready to seal the deal with the DRDO. The QRSAM is a beast in battle. It can track enemy aircraft from 120 km away. It can lock onto threats from 80 km. And it does not wait. It finds. It fires. It finishes. It works in the day. It works at night. It can move from place to place. And most importantly, it takes down moving targets at short notice. The QRSAM will strengthen India's short-to-medium range air defence, support systems like MRSAM and Akash and fill the gaps by intercepting threats that sneak in under radar coverage. With a range of 30 km, it will team up with India's other missiles such as MRSAM and Akash to trap anything that tries to enter Indian airspace. A top-level meeting is expected later this month. Transport dept nets over 13% growth in revenue over last fiscal year
Lucknow: The transport department of UP recorded an increase of over Rs 240 crore revenue in the first two months of the current financial year. During April-May 2025, the department collected a total of Rs 2,083.6 crore in revenue, compared to Rs 1,842.1 crore in the same period last year — a gain of Rs 241.5 crore, marking a 13.1% increase. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In May 2025 alone, revenue stood at Rs 1,040.5 crore, which is around Rs 128 crore more than May 2024 — a 14% increase. In May 2025, 3,62,134 non-transport vehicles were registered compared to 2,92,331 in May 2024 — an increase of 69,803 vehicles, or 23.9%. Two-wheeler registrations rose by 26.9% (an increase of 67,225 vehicles). In May 2025, 40,311 transport vehicles were registered, compared to 36,686 in May 2024 — an increase of 3,625 vehicles, or over 9.9%. The e-cart segment recorded an exceptional 65.1% growth (from 2,381 to 3,932). Furthermore, 50,626 electric vehicles were registered in Apr-May 2025, indicating an estimated 35% growth over the previous year. Major contributors include e-rickshaws (23,277), two-wheelers (10,845) and passenger three-wheelers (7,745). Additionally, 3,664 electric cars were registered in just two months — a rise of approximately 11.8%. The total number of on-road vehicles in the state increased from 4.9 crore in Mar 2025 to over 5 crore by May 31, 2025, adding over 7 lakh vehicles in just two months. This represents a 1.6% growth in Apr-May alone, with the annual growth rate projected to exceed 9% by year-end. Transport commissioner Brajesh Narain Singh said, "The department is steadily progressing in revenue growth, service quality and public satisfaction. Other positive indicators include over 90% of tax and vehicle-related revenue being collected through online platforms, reflecting strong digital adoption and transparency. Driving licence fee collections for May alone stood at Rs 29.5 crore, confirming that licensing services have become faster and more automated, officials said.
