Virat Kohli wasn't urged to rethink retirement; instead told he doesn't fit in Test team: 'BCCI doesn't request anyone'
With the suspense around Virat Kohli and his 'decision to retire' from Test cricket growing, each day is throwing a new surprise, new information. On Saturday morning, news that Kohli has informed the BCCI of his decision to walk away from Test cricket came as an absolute heartbreak for Kohli fans. The ripple effect was such that reportedly, the BCCI, out of desperation, urged Kohli to reconsider his decision, so as the Indian team that tours England for a five-Test series starting June 20 is not left inexperienced. Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin have already retired, leaving Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah as the only two sure-shot picks for the series. And as the series marks the start of a fresh World Test Championship cycle, no Kohli could be a body blow for India and a huge shot in the arm for England. And rightly so.
However, a report in The Dainik Jagran claims something totally opposite. It states that Kohli wasn't asked to reconsider his decision at all. And if anything, Kohli was told bluntly by the decision-makers that he does not warrant a place in India's Test team anymore due to his poor form. In what turned out to be his last Test series in Australia, Kohli tallied just 190 runs from five Tests, averaging a shade above 23. In fact, 100 of those 190 runs came in a single innings, when he scored his 30th Test century in Perth – his 9th Test ton against the Aussies. Besides, in the previous series against New Zealand, Kohli's 93 runs from six innings at an average of 15.50 cut an even poorer figure.

"The BCCI does not request anyone. A player's decision is his personal choice. We don't interfere in it," Jagran quoted a source as saying. Furthermore, that India lost the series 0-3 – their first-ever Test series loss on home soil in 12 years – and failed to progress to the final of the World Test Championship for the first time, escalated the entire matter. A meeting was held in Mumbai on May 7, where former Test captain Rohit was informed that he does not fit in India's Test set-up anymore. Turns out, Kohli was delivered the same message, although his final decision is awaited. When asked if Kohli will travel to England, the BCCI source added, "Hopefully not."

Ever since the debacle of New Zealand and Australia, the Indian team management's priority has been straightforward: to move forward, keeping Indian cricket's future in mind. Rohit, 38, and Kohli, 36, would not have lasted till the end of the next WTC cycle, which is in 2027, the year of the next ODI World Cup. With Rohit and Kohli keen to play their final ICC tournament in South Africa, managing two international formats along with the IPL is a gamble the BCCI wasn't willing to take.
The BCCI is in a tricky situation at the moment. It has to take care of three very important matters: come up with a revised schedule for the IPL 2025, declare the India A team's squad for the tour of England, announce the India squad for the five Tests in England, and appoint the Indian team's new Test captain, with Shubman Gill being the likely choice. With the big decision likely to be made around May 23 and the IPL's resumption on the cards, expect Kohli's decision to come anytime.

Sourav Ganguly fires shots at Agarkar, BCCI for dropping Shreyas Iyer from India squad: 'Not a player to be left out'
Sourav Ganguly was one of the biggest advocates of Ajit Agarkar when he was the captain of Team India and even the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. Agarkar has dished out memorable performances in Ganguly's captaincy but none more special than his six-wicket haul in Adelaide to help India register a famous win against Australia in 2003. So fond was Ganguly of Agarkar that he didn't consider his KKR team to be at full strength till Agarkar was injured. This was more than a year after Agarkar played his last international match. Cut to 2025, there is nothing to suggest a crack in the Ganguly-Agarkar relationship but the former India captain surely did not shy away from pointing fingers at the Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee for leaving out Shreyas Iyer from India's Test squad for the England tour. Iyer, who was a part of India's middle-order the last time they toured England, drifted away from the Test side due to his struggles against the short-pitched deliveries. The right-hander, however, made a strong statement by scoring heavily in ODIs, returning as one of India's top run-scorers in both the World Cup in 20243 and the Champions Trophy in 2025. Iyer maintained his upward surge with a productive domestic season in all formats for Mumbai. In between, Iyer won the IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024 and then led Punjab Kings to their first IPL final in 11 years. The 30-year-old scored 604 runs in 17 matches in the IPL this year. His strike rate of 175 was by far the most by any batter in the top 10 of the Orange Cap list this year. Agarkar and his selection committee, however, did not pick Iyer in India's Test squad. Reports suggested that there wasn't a lot of discussion about Iyer as the selectors and the team management thought Iyer had a lot to work on when it comes to red-ball cricket. Ganguly said Iyer should have been in England simply because of his current form in all formats. 'He has been playing at his best in the last one year, and should have been in this team. Last one year has been fantastic for him. He isn't the player who got left out. He is now scoring under pressure, taking responsibility, playing the short ball well. Although Test cricket's different, I would have had him in this series to see what he can do," Ganguly told RevSportz. The former BCCI secretary saw Iyer closely when he was the Director of Cricket at the Delhi Capitals. Iyer is currently leading theMumbai Falcons in the Mumbai League 2025, where the team has already reached the finals of the tournament. In Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's absence, the heavy lifting of the middle-order batting will have to be done by new captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain Rishabh Pant. There is a possibility that both Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair might get a look in the XI unless India decide to play a seam-bowling all-rounder in Shardul Thakur or Nitish Kumar Reddy. When asked if he is giving India a chance going into the series, Ganguly said, 'Yes, sure. We just need two things, batting well and [Jasprit] Bumrah remaining fit. We won in Australia, in Melbourne (2020-21), with a young batting line-up, having no [Virat] Kohli, no Rohit Sharma. So, I do not see why we cannot win.' The five-match Test series starts on June 20 at Leeds.

Bengaluru stampede: CID withdraws custody plea for RCB marketing head Nikhil Sosale and others
The Karnataka Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday withdrew its request for custodial interrogation of four officials linked to the stampede that killed 11 people outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebration, Indian Express reported. The decision came after the defence pointed to an ongoing petition in the Karnataka High Court questioning the legality of the arrests. As reported by the publication, the CID had initially sought nine days' custody of the accused for further investigation. However, the plan was halted when senior advocate Sandesh Chouta, representing RCB's head of marketing Nikhil Sosale, argued that the matter was already sub judice in the High Court. (Also Read: RCB marketing head Nikhil Sosale denied interim relief in Bengaluru stampede case) The magistrate also questioned the CID's haste, asking what could realistically be achieved in just one day of custody before the High Court's verdict. Assistant Superintendent of Police Jagadeesh, representing the CID, maintained that custodial interrogation was necessary to probe the planning and crowd management lapses during the IPL celebration event, the report added. Following a recess and consultations with Advocate-General Shashi Kiran Shetty, the CID informed the court that it would defer its custody application until the High Court delivers clarity on the pending petition. The four accused, Nikhil Sosale, Sunil Mathew (director and vice-president), Kiran Kumar (manager), and Shamanth S P (ticketing executive) of DNA Entertainment Networks Pvt Ltd, were returned to Parappana Agrahara Central Prison. (Also Read: Bengaluru walkers' group urges Defence Ministry to reclaim Chinnaswamy stadium land) The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday refused to grant interim relief to Nikhil Sosale, the head of marketing at Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), in connection with the June 4 stampede outside Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium that left 11 people dead. The court reserved its order on his petition until June 11, news agency PTI reported.

Soccer-Spain's Hermoso left out of Women's Euro 2025 squad
June 11 - Jenni Hermoso has been left out of the Spain squad for the Women's European Championship, with coach Montse Tome saying there was too much competition for places in her position. The 35-year-old forward played a key role in Spain's World Cup victory in 2023 and is the country's leading goalscorer but has featured less frequently for the side in recent months. Hermoso was also at the centre of a scandal involving former Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales, who was found guilty of sexual assault for kissing the player without her consent after Spain's World Cup win in Sydney. Rubiales said the kiss was consensual. Hermoso, who plays club football for Mexico's Tigres, was last called up to the Spain squad for friendlies against Italy and Canada in October and was part of the squad for last year's Paris Olympics. "I spoke with Jenni already in the beginning of the year, we had a conversation," Tome told reporters on Tuesday. "We've done with her what we've done with everyone else. We've valued her season in Tigres, we've spoken with the manager in different times, and we did what we had to do, to assess what we need from the players." Tome said Patri Guijarro, Maite Zubieta, Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmati, Vicky Lopez, Mariona Caldentey and Claudia Pina were all capable of playing in Hermoso's position. "It's difficult to make it to the final list of 23 players," she added. Spain are in Group B of the tournament in Germany, alongside Portugal, Belgium and Italy. They play Japan in a warm-up game on June 27 before taking on Portugal in their campaign opener on July 3.
