Brooklyn Borough President pushes for $5 million to combat deed theft

Yahoo20-05-2025
BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) — Community leaders and City Council members rallied to increase funding and awareness to end predatory lending and deed theft.
Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso is calling on the City Council to allocate $5 million in next year's budget.
More Local News
Since 2014, nearly 3,500 complaints of deed theft have been reported. Almost half the victims, often seniors, come from Black and brown communities in Brooklyn.
The hope is that city funding can help educate homeowners from falling victim to predatory lenders and help those who already have, with the crushing legal expenses.
Advocates want the City Council to also consider lifting the statute of limitations for deed theft that occurred years ago and can't be challenged in court. The efforts targeting deed theft at the city level will bolster efforts currently being made at the state level.
The aim is to shut down predatory deed theft and keep vulnerable New Yorkers in their homes.

Day 3 of trial for alleged mastermind in Young Dolph murder

Hernandez Govan will be live in the courtroom at 9:30 a.m. in the video box above. MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Hernandez Govan, the man accused of orchestrating the death of rapper Young Dolph, is set to appear in court for day three of his trial Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, Angela Arnold, the girlfriend of Cornelius Smith, was the first witness to take the stand. She told the court that to her knowledge, Smith never had direct contact with Big Jook and that he would communicate with Govan to send and receive messages. She also testified she saw Govan at a carwash hours after Young Dolph's death, when Smith picked up a cellphone from Govan he had left in the white Mercedes used in the murder. Various Memphis Police Investigators were then called to testify in court, along with cell phone records. According to the investigators, they went over calls and text records of Goavn, Smith, and Big Jook in the months leading up to the murder and afterward. They say Smith appeared to have several outgoing calls to Govan. But in cross-examination, Govan's defense attorney explained the reasoning for their communication, saying, Govan supplied Smith with various types of pills, and Johnson talked with him because he was an aspiring rapper. Another investigator who testified said detectives went to the airport to execute a search warrant on Big Jook's phone and asked if they could speak to him, but he refused. This story will be updated. ► Day 1: Trial of alleged mastermind in Young Dolph case ► Day 2: Trial of alleged mastermind in Young Dolph case Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Toll evaders caught in 100th ghost plate enforcement action

NEW YORK (PIX11) — Drivers with unpaid tolls, ghost plates, and license plate covers have been on notice. Police are looking for them and ready to write tickets or even seize vehicles. A 16-member law enforcement task force held the 100th operation on the Robert F. Kennedy Triborough Bridge on Tuesday. Officials have called it 'a coordinated regional effort.' More Local News It was first organized in March 2024 as the number of ghost plates and unbilled tolls increased. Congestion pricing was also initially to be implemented in 2024. Since the program began, law enforcement around New York state has used license plate readers to scan vehicles on bridges, tunnels, and some roadways. Units stop the drivers for unpaid tolls, obstructed plates, or other infractions. Stolen cars and suspects with warrants have also been found. Sometimes, summonses are written. Arrests can also be made in certain cases. More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State Officials with MTA Bridges and Tunnels report the number of unbillable tolls is down 20% at MTA crossings. Around 5,300 vehicles have been seized by the task force in the past 17 months, and 1,300 arrests have been made. About 50,000 summonses have been issued to drivers. Since the beginning of 2025, 38 enforcement operations have resulted in 1,893 towed vehicles with collections of approximately $11.5 million in unpaid tolls, fees, judgments, and debts owed to task force partner agencies. 'The coordination between B&T officers and our regional law enforcement partners has resulted in increased accountability on our roads,' said MTA Bridges and Tunnels President Catherine Sheridan. When congestion pricing took effect in January 2025, the role of the task force expanded to include operations targeting vehicles committing violations in and around the Congestion Relief Zone south of 60th Street. There have been 11 operations within the zone, which have resulted in 97 towed vehicles.
