'Secret' Irish beach beats Maldives hotspot as one of the world's best

Metro30-04-2025
If you're dreaming of lying on a beach right now, you might be picturing yourself on a Maldives atoll, or snoozing on a cove in Positano.
But there's a stunning spot much closer to home, described as a 'secluded paradise' with 'tropical vibes'.
It's time to put Ireland's Keem Beach on your radar.
The beautiful beach, sometimes within Keem Bay on Achill Island, along the Wild Atlantic Way.
It was named in the annual ranking by World's 50 Best Beaches, coming in at number 7 in Europe, and 48 in the entire world. It beats the likes of Kuramathi Sandbank in the Maldives, and La Pelosa in Sardinia, to claim its spot.

While the mercury never exactly soars here (visitors can enjoy pleasant average highs of 16C in July and August), its white sand and crystal clear sea have been praised for rivalling more exotic spots.
'Keem Beach stands out for its raw natural beauty and surprisingly blue waters which resemble those found in more tropical locations,' reads the list.
Fans of the Oscar winning-film, The Banshees of Inisherin, might also recognise it: Keem Bay is where Brendan Gleeson's character, Colm Doherty, calls home. The beach at also the setting for the final scene of the film.
Keem Beach is beloved by those who have been lucky enough to visit.
The spot has five stars on TripAdvisor, with travellers saying it's a destination like no other.
'I have been around this funny old world,' wrote one reviewer, 'but I think this was possibly the most beautiful beach I have seen.'
Others agreed: 'Keem, despite hundreds of visits since early childhood, continues to amaze as possibly my top wonder of the world.'
Over on TikTok, viewers had no idea that such a beautiful gem existed.
'Wow this is stunning!' wrote a commenter. 'Would not have thought this was Ireland.'
However, the one critique visitors have of Keem is that, perhaps unsurprisingly, it gets pretty crowded.
'It's a great beach but can get busy,' wrote a visitor. 'There is a warden now who does his best to control the traffic and ensure sensible parking which is helpful.'
Another said the traffic was 'worse than the M50' while one guest advised people to 'get there early to avoid the streams of traffic in the afternoon as parking is limited.'
It's one of five Blue Flag beaches on Achill.
There is a lifeguard during swimming season
The beach is completely free
Public toilets are available
Water temperature is pretty chilly, peaking at 16C from July to September
There is an accessible ramp to get down to the beach, but no accessible toilets
If simply gazing at your surroundings isn't enough, there's plenty to do at Keem.
During the cooler months, you can talk a stroll along the top of the cliffs – there's a short walk (less than a mile) that ends at Achill Head, the most westerly point of the island.
Or, you can take a trip to Bunowna, a deserted village which used to be a seasonal home for workers that grazed cattle in the summer. Now, you can wander around the abandoned cottages.
In the summer though, the beach truly comes alive with families visiting and splashing about in the cool sea. More Trending
For adventurers, book on a tour with Achill Surf. The company provides kayaking and surfing lessons – they even offer five day summer camps for children aged nine to 17.
There's also some pretty impressive wildlife to be seen at Keem – in particular, sharks. Not the scary kind though.
Tourists flock to see basking sharks, the second largest shark after the whale shark. The so-called gentle giants are often spotted around Achill Island in the warmer months and, thankfully, are generally friendly towards humans and boats.

After they finished making a reboot of The Naked Gun, Liam said of co-star Pam: 'I'm madly in love with her.' He also quipped that his favourite part of shooting the cop movie spoof, which opened on August 1, 2025, was 'the sex scenes'. The couple were given an intimacy co-ordinator for those shots, with Liam adding: 'I'd never had one before. But she was in the background. There was no kind of, 'OK! Excuse me!'" While Pamela said of her co-star: 'I think I have a friend for ever in Liam and we definitely have a connection that is very sincere, very loving, and he's a good guy.' She added: 'He really is a silly guy. He acts like a silly little boy sometimes.' Their relationship lasted roughly two years, from 2010 to 2012. They reportedly parted ways reportedly because Liam wanted to focus more on his family. In 2012, a source told the Mail: "Liam is heading back to America at the start of next month to work on his new film Non-Stop. "He told Freya that he wants to take a break and concentrate on his family." They met while starring together in the Broadway production of Anna Christie in 1993. Following Natasha's divorce from her previous husband, the filmmaker Robert Fox, she and Liam wed in 1994. They had two sons together — Micheal, born in 1995, and Daniel, who followed a year later in 1996 Their marriage lasted until Natasha's tragic death in 2009, following a skiing accident in Quebec. Liam frequently visits her gravesite and maintains a heartfelt emotional connection. In 2020, Liam told Entertainment Inquirer: 'I speak to her every day at her grave which is about a mile and half down the road. 'I go down there quite often, so I do speak to her as if she's here. Not that she answers me." Brooke Shields (1992) 6 Liam Neeson and Brooke Shields dated before he married his wife Natasha Richardson Credit: Getty Liam Neeson dated Brooke Shields in early 1992, a relationship the American actress detailed in her 2014 memoir There Was a Little Girl. She recalled: "He wooed me with his brogue, his poetry, and his shitty choice of cheap pinot grigio wine." The relationship grew serious quickly and, according to Brooke, Liam proposed to her twice before they parted ways at the end of 1992. Their romance ended after Neeson flew to Los Angeles for the holidays and did not maintain contact, though he later called and proposed again, which Brooke declined, presciently predicting he would fall for his next leading lady. In her memoir, Brooke wrote that they got serious after a few months and Liam proposed "without a ring". In November 2014, she told People: "He came back after the first time he left me and asked me to marry him again. 'This was before he started to do a play [Anna Christie]. "And I said, 'No, no, no, because knowing you, you'll probably fall in love with your next leading lady and marry her, so I'm leaving myself out of this.' And I was dead right.'' The leading lady in the play was Natasha Richardson. Rumoured relationships (1988–1992) There have been rumours of Liam Neeson dating several other singing and acting A-listers. He reportedly dated Barbra Streisand from September 1991 to 1992, although they kept things private. Liam was also romantically linked with Julia Roberts, Janice Dickinson and Sinéad O'Connor, though these reports were never confirmed publicly. Helen Mirren (1981–1985) 6 Liam Neeson and Dame Helen Mirren were in a serious relationship in the 80s Credit: Getty Liam Neeson's notable early romance was with actress Helen Mirren. They met while filming the 1981 movie Excalibur and began dating shortly thereafter. Their relationship was serious — they lived together in London for about four years until they parted company sometime around 1985. Despite ending their romantic relationship, they have maintained a respectful and amicable connection over the years. In February 2023, Liam told Entertainment Tonight Canada: 'Helen is a remarkable woman, a remarkable actress. 'I should be so lucky and be honoured to have spent three or four years with that lady. She's really something else.'

Ibiza holidaymaker share warning after staying at popular adults-only hotel

Hotels are usually the most common choice of accommodation for tourists and a woman who stayed at The Unexpected Ibiza Hotel shared one thing that guests might not realise Summer is the time of year when many people head off on holiday or attend music festivals. A popular adult hotspot is Ibiza, renowned for its vibrant nightlife, major clubs and DJs, as well as sandy beaches with crystal clear waters. ‌ The island, in Spain, has a lively party scene, attracting celebrities and music-lovers. There is a wide range of accommodation in Ibiza to suit different tastes and budgets, including luxury hotels, budget hotels and villas. Louise, a Londoner with a passion for finding quirky experiences, stayed at The Unexpected Ibiza Hotel, which has a five-star rating and is known for offering luxury and VIP services and giving guests full access to the famous Ushuaïa club with their booking. ‌ After checking into the hotel, Louise shared a video on TikTok giving viewers a tour of her room. ‌ When she went in she was happy to see that her suitcase had already been brought up for her and she spotted some treats on the bed, explaining that she was visiting Ibiza to go to Gordon Ramsay's new Hell's Kitchen restaurant, which opened at The Unexpected Ibiza Hotel. The travel fan then spotted a minibar with a few bottles of alcohol but after thinking about how much they would cost she said she would 'not be touching' them. Next, Louise checked out the 'massive' balcony with a beautiful beach view before finding some 'nice' dressing gowns in the wardrobe. ‌ She moved onto the bathroom and showed what was inside, saying: 'Okay, this is our bathroom. Clarins products, [I] like that. Sink, toilet, it's all very sexy, very dark.' The holidaygoer then shared something that might trip up some guests: 'Okay, they have got a lot of things in this hotel that look like they're complimentary amenities that actually aren't, you have to pay for them. Louise added: 'They put things around the room and you can open it if you want to and use it but then you've got to pay for it, [I] don't know how I feel about that.' ‌ Continuing to explore the room, she spotted a box of 'premium' adult toys next to the bed that she thought was 'hilarious' and joked that she wouldn't be needing them. The Unexpected Ibiza Hotel is for adults only so all guests must be at least 18-years-old to be able to stay there. ‌ It is located in Playa d'en Bossa that is considered to be the most popular resort on Ibiza, boasting the longest beach on the island, and it is the home of the Ushuaïa and Hi Ibiza clubs. Guests staying at the luxury hotel can indulge in fine dining, with options like caviar and champagne and a rooftop bar with signature cocktails. Louise's TikTok video has garnered more than 7,000 views and a number of comments. One viewer admitted that they would have thought the Clarins products were a freebie as they commented: 'Oh God my dumb a$$$ would fall for the Clarins bag as a freebie and brought it home for my mum and cry about it later.'
