Queen's Brian May, Roger Taylor awarded 2025 Polar Music Prize
Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen have been awarded the 2025 Polar Music Prize by Sweden's King Carl Gustaf.
Attending the gala at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm, the rockers were recognised for the entirety of their career.
Speaking on stage, May shared, "In this special moment, I contemplate how that younger Brian May in 1974 would have felt if he knew that we would be living this kind of dream 50 years in the future."
Taylor added, "When we started our band, we had ambitions, but never dreamed of the journey that was to follow.
"We were fortunate in the fact that our four wildly different personalities came together to achieve a wonderful chemistry."
Known as the Nobel Prize of Music, the Polar Music Prize is a Swedish international award founded in 1989 by Stig Anderson, best known as the manager of the Swedish band ABBA. It is annually given to one popular musician and one classical musician.
Previous winners of the contemporary award include Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Dizzy Gillespie and Björk.
It is awarded for "significant achievements in music and/or musical activity, or for achievements which are found to be of great potential importance for music or musical activity, and it shall be referable to all fields within or closely connected with music".

After hosting the Tony Awards, Cynthia Erivo and crew headed to the Russian Tea Room in New York, where award winners and celebrities decided to shed the formalities of the evening and skip to the celebration. Dancers included Julianne Hough; Danielle Brooks, who starred in The Color Purple on Broadway with Erivo; Adrienne Warren, currently starring in The Last Five Years on Broadway; Dylan Mulvaney; and Lena Waithe, as the music transitioned to Beyoncé tunes and other pop hits. Nearby, playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins clutched his Tony Award, won earlier that night for his play Purpose, as he was congratulated by guests, including Sarah Paulson, who starred in his play Appropriate last season. Erivo, who arrived to the party around 12:30 a.m., was coming off of several hours leading the Tonys telecast, where she had sung an opening number with a gospel choir, poked fun at nominees including George Clooney and joked with Oprah Winfrey, as well as the release of her second album Friday. She was still dancing at 3 a.m. and at one point led the dance circle to Drake's song 'Rich Baby Daddy,' where she was twerking and dropping to the floor. She spent much of the party dancing underneath the Russian Tea Room's tree, which has branches filled with Fabergé-inspired glass eggs. Earlier that evening, between passed small bites, which included small burgers, tuna tartare and shrimp, and specialty drinks that included Cyn City (a mocktail including mint, lemon and raspberry zinger), attendees weighed in on the big winners of the evening. 'I'm so happy for Cole and Sam,' one attendee was overheard saying, referring to Oh, Mary! star Cole Escola and director Sam Pinkleton, who both won for their roles in the campy play about a reimagined Mary Todd Lincoln. Phylicia Rashad, who directed Purpose on Broadway, sat in a circular booth chatting with Victoria Clark, a 2023 Tony winner for Kimberly Akimbo, and press agent Irene Gandy. Fresh off the Hamilton performance at the Tonys telecast, which saw the reunion of the original Broadway cast, cast members Emmy Raver-Lampman and Daveed Diggs entered the party after midnight, walking into the first-floor bar, with Raver-Lampman noting, 'Oh, much more our speed.' The downstairs area included a roped-off section, for those with reserved tables (aka celebrities) and a piano in the middle where Sara Bareilles and Broadway stars Alex Newell and Kecia Lewis, who has recently been at the center of industry chatter after Patti LuPone's interview, talked and took a photo. Other attendees throughout the night included Matthew Broderick; Adam Lambert; Elsbeth's Carrie Preston; Conrad Ricamora, a Tony nominee for Oh, Mary!; Ben Stiller, who was a presenter at the Tony Awards; and Harry Potter alum Tom Felton, who recently announced he'll be reprising his role as Draco Malfoy on Broadway. Lea Michele's Tonys Look Paid Homage to Her Upcoming Role in 'Chess'
Lea Michele is making a triumphant return to Broadway this fall in the revival of Chess, and what better place to celebrate than at the Tony Awards? Last night, the actress appeared at Radio City Music Hall, where she joined co-star Aaron Tveit to present the trophy for Best Revival of a Musical. Together, they announced the winner: the Nicole Scherzinger-led Sunset Boulevard. For the big event, Michele wore a custom Michael Kors Collection look: a black halter tuxedo jacket with a plunging lapel neckline, paired with a pleated chiffon skirt featuring a thigh-high slit. She accessorized with classic black pumps and shimmering silver jewelry—including earrings, a bracelet, a bangle, and a ring—all by EFFY Jewelry. Consider it a seductive spin on the classic tailored suit. For the uninitiated, Chess is a musical set against the backdrop of the Cold War, revolving around an intense chess championship—and a complicated love triangle—between an American and a Russian. Joining Michele and Tveit is Nicholas Christopher (known for Miss Saigon and Hamilton), rounding out the trio. The production features a score by ABBA's Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, with lyrics by Tim Rice. The book for this iteration is penned by Danny Strong (Dopesick) and Michael Mayer will direct. 'I am beyond excited to be returning to Broadway this fall with my amazing new co-stars in Chess,' Michele tells ELLE. 'I made my Broadway debut when I was 8 years old, and I've had the pleasure of being a part of this community for 30 years now. I cannot wait to get back onto the stage.' Before Chess opens at the Shubert Theatre, Michele will be gracing stages elsewhere—she's currently in the midst of a solo concert tour across the U.S. and Canada. 'I'm having so much fun on tour singing songs that are so special to me,' she says of the shows. 'It's a mix of songs from Broadway shows that I have been in, some songs from my studio albums, as well as songs from Glee! We also included a fun new section that we think Rachel Berry would sing currently, and I think fans have really enjoyed that part of the show. I also tell a lot of stories and have fun interactions with the audience.' Michele wasn't the only former Glee star at the Tonys last night—Darren Criss (who won for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical) and Jonathan Groff (who was nominated in the same category and performed in the Hamilton reunion) were also in attendance. The Poignant Reason Princess Eugenie Left a Chair Empty at Her Royal Wedding
Eagle-eyed royal followers noticed that one of the best seats in the house was left empty for Princess Eugenie's 2018 wedding to Jack Brooksbank. The empty chair on the front row caught many an eye, with some wondering if the chair was left empty to honor a loved one who had passed away. The poignant reason all came down to honoring Queen Elizabeth, Eugenie's grandmother, who was in attendance at St. George's Chapel that Princess Eugenie married Jack Brooksbank, eagle-eyed fans noticed that one of the best seats in the house at St. George's Chapel was left empty—and there's a poignant reason why. Eugenie—the younger daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson—wore an emerald tiara, known as Margaret Greville's tiara, that the late Queen Mother inherited in 1942. Eugenie and Jack invited 850 guests to their 2018 ceremony, but one chair was empty. Some questioned whether the empty chair 'was out of respect to a deceased relative,' with others guesing 'that there was a missing guest,' per The Daily Mail. In fact, neither of those reasons ring true. The real reason, it turns out, came down to royal protocol and keeping Eugenie's grandmother Queen Elizabeth happy, the outlet reported. 'Traditionally the Queen and the rest of the royals sit in the right hand choir pews at St. George's Chapel, closest to the altar,' according to The Daily Mail. 'Royal protocol dictates that no one is allowed to sit in front of the Queen and obstruct her view.' Of this particular empty chair, the Queen didn't sit in it herself because she didn't find it comfortable. Instead, she opted to sit in the second row alongside her husband, Prince Philip. While Ferguson, Eugenie's sister Princess Beatrice, and Zara and Mike Tindall all sat in the front row, the Queen and Philip were joined in the second row by Prince Charles, Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle. (Harry and Meghan had married in the same venue five months prior.) Eugenie and the Queen—whom she called 'Grannie'—had a close relationship, and the Queen promised Eugenie she could wear the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara on her wedding day when Eugenie was a little girl. When Meghan asked to wear it for her own wedding the same year as Eugenie's, the Queen declined her request, as she wanted to hold true to her long ago promise to her granddaughter. 'For the wedding of Eugenie and Jack, the small detail [of the empty chair] meant that the Queen was comfortable and could get a full view of her granddaughter as she married the love of her life,' The Daily Mail reported. When the Queen died in September 2022, sisters Beatrice and Eugenie wrote a joint statement ahead of her funeral, which was shared on Eugenie's Instagram page on September 17. 'We've not been able to put much into words since you left us all,' the York sisters wrote. 'There have been tears and laughter, silences and chatter, hugs and loneliness, and a collective loss for you, our beloved Queen and our beloved Grannie. We, like many, thought you'd be here forever. And we all miss you terribly.' 'You were our matriarch, our guest, our loving hand on our backs leading us through this world,' the statement continued. 'You taught us so much and we will cherish those lessons and memories forever. For now, dear Grannie, all we want to say is thank you. Thank you for making us laugh, for including us, for picking heather and raspberries, for marching soldiers, for our teas, for comfort, for joy. You, being you, will never know the impact you have had on our family and so many people around the world.' After Eugenie and Jack's eldest son August was born in 2021, Eugenie told The Spectator magazine in 2022 that she would 'love Augie to have her patience, her calmness, and her kindness, while always being able to laugh at himself and keep a twinkle in his eye.'
