NYC's beloved Central Park institution the Delacorte Theater returns after 2-year renovation

CBS News6 days ago
The Delacorte Theater, a beloved Central Park landmark, is back after a nearly two-year renovation.
The 63-year-old theater has been revamped and will reopen just in time for the return of Shakespeare in the Park.
The theater had been showing its age, with a leaky roof, outdated equipment and limited access for people with disabilities. So two years ago, crews started rebuilding the new theater, installing accessible seating ramps, lifts, elevators and new bathrooms, as well as larger dressing rooms, and a climate control system to keep performers and crew comfortable, rain or shine.
"We did it. We rebuilt the Delacorte," board member Arielle Tepper.
"It is accessible because it needs to belong to everybody," artistic director Oskar Eustis said. "This renovation which is so important to us had made a theater which is free, because theater itself, and everything in it, is the property of the people of New York. You own it."
"In new seats and stage, for all New York to see. Our hearts and democracy restored through Shakespeare," Comptroller Brad Lander said.
The theater's major update was celebrated at a ribbon cutting, which was attended by the all-star cast who will soon begin performing "Twelfth Night."
"I just want to say I'm really glad we're doing a comedy this summer," actor Peter Dinklage said.
Sandra Oh of "Grey's Anatomy" and Jesse Tyler Ferguson of "Modern Family" are also in the cast.
The Delacorte first opened in 1962 with the goal of bringing theater to everyone. Since then, more than 160 productions have graced the stage, featuring legends like Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep and Morgan Freeman. Now, with a fresh look and the same Shakespearean spirit, the Delacorte is ready to take center stage once again.
"Twelfth Night" kicks off Aug. 7. To get tickets, you can enter the digital lottery on the Public Theater's website or the TodayTix app, or visit a distribution site in Central Park, a city library, or downtown at the Public Theater box office. There's also a standby line on the day of each performance. For more information, CLICK HERE.

Bruce Springsteen joins Zach Bryan for surprise 'Atlantic City' performance: Watch

Even Bruce Springsteen isn't too big for a cameo. The Boss joined musicians Zach Bryan and Caleb Followill of the Kings of Leon for a rendition of his 1982 classic "Atlantic City" at Bryan's July 20 MetLife Stadium show in New Jersey. The Kings of Leon and Jersey-based Rock band Front Bottoms were the openers for the concert, while Springsteen, 75, was a surprise guest, joining later for a quick-lick guitar solo on Bryan's track "Revival" during the encore. "Proud to call him my hero, one of the greatest songwriters to ever live," Bryan said before introducing the legendary rocker. "If you guys will have him, this is Bruce Springsteen!" Why Bruce Springsteen changed his set list to end concerts with this song The pair then moved on to play "Atlantic City," a harmonica-heavy ballad off Springsteen's 1982 album "Nebraska." Followill, Bryan and Springsteen stood at side-by-side mics, passing the lyrics back and forth, before embracing at the end of the track as the crowd coo-ed "Bruuuucee!" Bryan, 29, has followed in Springsteen's singer-songwriter footsteps, often folding angst into his scratchy, smoker's vocals and genre-bending music, which features a cocktail of folk, country and soul. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band still rock, quake and shake after 50 years Springsteen joined Bryan on stage last year in Brooklyn and Philadelphia, lending old-school rocker legitimacy to an emerging act. The two also collaborated on the track "Sandpaper" off Bryan's 2024 album, "The Great American Bar Scene." The July 20 show was the third for Bryan this weekend at MetLife, the first time a country artist played three nights in a single stand at the venue. Springsteen is fresh off the release of a previously unheard cache of tracks from years passed. On "Tracks II: The Lost Albums," the Boss treats fans to the musical roads not taken, with mystic, ranchera, and rock music blending on a masterful mix of some 83 songs. Kevin Feige Unveils Some of the MCU's Big Next Moves

The grind never stops at Marvel Studios, and Kevin Feige has gone and revealed some juicy nuggets about what is and isn't to come in the MCU. The longtime producer recently talked to press about Marvel's next moves, and he was naturally asked about Blade. We're now on the six-year anniversary of Mahershala Ali being announced for the role, and he recently told press to pester Marvel about the film's infamously troubled production. To Deadline and other outlets, Feige confirmed that yes, there have been four separate takes of the character in the development process so far: two in the past and two in the modern day. (One would've been set in the Prohibition era, and it was far enough along its background costumes were instead used for Sinners.) The version now being developed has 'landed on modern day' and will see Ali do more than 'put a leather outfit on him and have him start killing vampires.' 'We didn't want to do that to Mahershala and he didn't want to do that to us,' Feige explained to THR. 'You can start and have a good script and make it a great script through production, but we didn't feel confident we could do that on Blade.' Additionally, he confirmed that Ryan Coogler isn't in the running for that project, as he's focused on developing Black Panther 3. Another character fans have been wanting to come to the MCU is one Miles Morales, aka New York's one and only Spider-Man (other Spiders may be available). It sounds like fans should keep on waiting, as Feige said the studio 'has been told to stay away' by Sony, which owns Miles' film rights. The character's animated trilogy is expected to wrap with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse in June 2027, but until then, any plans to bring him into the fold 'are nowhere' on the MCU's end. Sony, on the other hand, has its own plans for bringing him out of animation. When it comes to long-term plans, Feige told press Marvel's current roadmap stretches to 2032. Naturally, the X-Men are part of those plans, and they'll be recast for their MCU debut, which'll be directed by Thunderbolts' Jake Schreirer. X-fans will get one more chance to see the original Fox actors reprise their roles in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. But the new X-Men will also prepare audiences for bigger MCU characters like Tony Stark and Steve Rogers to be eventually played by newer actors down the line. But don't worry about any of that until Secret Wars, which will end with a 'reset' that brings the X-Men and Fantastic Four into the same universe as the current crop of MCU heroes. Feige stressed to Variety that this isn't a reboot, which he considers 'a scary word that can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline—we're thinking along those lines.' 'Secret Wars very, very much sets us up for the future,' Feige teased. 'Avengers: Endgame was about endings, literally, and Secret Wars is about beginnings.' Want more io9 news?
