Black Friday: How to score major deals on Disney+, streaming platforms
With so many streaming services out there, it can be expensive keeping up with content. Here's how to save money, while enjoying your favorite shows.
Problem Solved
A Tennessee man who worked at a DVD and Blu-ray company is facing charges for stealing and selling home video releases of films such as "Black Widow" and "Dune" ahead of their public release, prosecutors said.
Steven Hale of Memphis faces charges for copyright infringement and moving stolen goods across state lines, the Justice Department announced Friday. Hale ran the scheme from February 2021 to March 2022, exploiting his workplace to share copies of more than 20 popular movies, according to an indictment the department unsealed Friday.
One movie the Justice Department said Hale pulled, "Spider-Man: No Way Home," was directly ripped from the Blu-ray, copied and shared online a month before the home release.
"Copies of 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' were downloaded tens of millions of times, with an estimated loss to the copyright owner of tens of millions of dollars," the department said.
Tennessee man exploited his position for personal gain
Court records didn't indicate what company Hale worked for during the scheme. However, prosecutors said he infringed upon several copyrights for the "purposes of commercial advantage and private financial gain."
Some major picture studios affected by Hale's scheme included Walt Disney Studios, along with Marvel Studios and Pixar; Universal Pictures and its subsidiaries like Illumination; Warner Brothers Pictures and its affiliates New Line Cinema; Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures; and Paramount Pictures.
If convicted of copyright infringement, Hale could face up to five years in prison for each count. For the charge of using the internet to move stolen goods, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
Copyright infringements, piracy a problem for the film industry
The Justice Department's charges against Hale underscored the long effort by film associations and organizations to take down stolen copies of their movies and stop them from being distributed without permission, known commonly as piracy.
The Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment filed copyright infringement lawsuits this year against people it believes are running illegal internet protocol TV services, according to a March 4 news release. Members of the alliance include Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, Netflix, Walt Disney Studios and others. The group was created to protect studios' intellectual and creative properties.
Its lawsuits targeted Zachary DeBarr, who it claims operates the Outer Limits IPTV, and Brandon Weibley, who it said operates at least five IPTVs.
"The two unrelated lawsuits allege that DeBarr and Weibley's services facilitate mass copyright infringement by offering unauthorized access to thousands of pirated television channels, movies, and television shows," the group said.

Brenda Song Defended From 'Weirdo' Trace Cyrus After Allegations Of Fake Pregnancy During Romance

Brenda Song is receiving an outpouring of support from fans amid bombshell allegations from her ex-boyfriend, . The brother of pop star recalled harrowing details of their seven-year relationship, accusing the Disney alum of telling "lies." However, fans think Trace, who has been making headlines for bizarre social media rants, is only seeking attention. The drama began on Wednesday, June 11, after a fan insulted Trace in an Instagram comment section. "Ahhhh, now we know why Brenda left. Good riddance," the user wrote, as seen in a screenshot shared on X. The "Seventeen Forever" star didn't take the remark lightly and decided to spill the tea on what ended the relationship. "Yes, because she stole thousands of dollars from me and faked multiple pregnancies," Trace replied. He alleged that Song lied to his family about being "terminally ill," giving them a breast cancer and brain tumor diagnosis. "It was all a lie," he slammed. The 36-year-old further claimed that his mother, Tish Cyrus, confronted the "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody" actress for her lies. However, due to the humiliation suffered, Song never associated publicly with his family. "Thanks for reminding me of another scenario where I was a great, loving person and someone did me wrong for no reason," he added. Trace continued his outburst online, this time accusing Song of faking an abortion. "Oh, she also faked an abortion with fake blood covering the bathroom floor," he penned. The Metro Station guitarist recalled he and Tish took Song to the hospital, where "all the lies started unraveling and [they] realized it was fake." Trace then took to his Instagram Stories to give an update on when things with his ex-girlfriend finally came to an end. He explained that the "Wendy Wu" actress visited him after allegedly lying about "the best surgeon in Chicago" removing her tumor. Calling it the "funniest part," Trace claimed he embarrassed Song, writing: "She didn't realize we were catching on to her lies. So when she showed up to my house with a bandage on her head claiming she just got out of surgery I ripped it off exposing no surgery had been done." Per Page Six, the Cyrus sibling concluded his rant, calling his ex-girlfriend's actions "proof of how f–ked in the head child stars are." He then expressed hope that Song is doing better mentally. Trace's post wasn't well-received by fans online, who believed he was trying to cause an unnecessary stir. "She's been in a new relationship for years, and this loser is still talking about her like we're supposed to care. Move on horse face @TraceCyrus," this user on X blasted. Another fan urged, "Ummmmm…. Leave Brenda Song alone, you weirdo," while a third comment read, "He's just mad that Brenda is in a happy marriage and has a successful career while he's a flop." This fan theorized, "2012 breakup. Trace [is] clearly hurting for money. Sorry Metro Station didn't work out." Other branded the "Prescriptions" singer for being "bitter" and a "misogynist." Trace and Song's relationship dates back to 2010 after they went public, following his breakup with Demi Lovato. A year after their debut, the former couple announced their engagement in an October 2011 tweet by the guitarist. However, they broke it off less than a year later. The ex-lovers continued to date on and off for six more years before finally going their separate ways in February 2018. US Weekly reports that Trace released a track named after Song that detailed the breakup. The "Running Point" actress has since moved on with fellow actor Macaulay Culkin, to whom she is engaged. Together they have two sons, Dakota, 4, and Carson, 2. Trace's outburst at Song comes just days after he publicly attacked his father, Billy Ray Cyrus. In a disturbing Instagram post, the aggrieved son labeled the country artist "evil" and "pathetic." The music artist slammed his father for being "so hungry for fame," expressing frustration that Billy chose the spotlight over their family. Trace was particularly offended that the "Achy Breaky Heart" singer flew to Italy with Elizabeth Hurley. He alleged that Billy skipped out on his maternal grandmother's funeral in LA to vacation with his new girlfriend. "You're the lamest man to ever walk planet earth," Trace wrote of his dad.

People deletes Olivia Munn story after Ms. Rachel comments draw 'threats'

In a rare move, People magazine deleted a story from its website on Wednesday after it triggered 'violent' threats against its subject, the actress Olivia Munn, and her family. The story was about Munn's distaste for children's television and bore a headline specifically citing the popular YouTuber Ms. Rachel — which apparently triggered some fans. 'There is no excuse for these abhorrent attacks, and we will always prioritize safety above all else,' the publication acknowledged in a statement explaining the decision to remove a story. It's an unusual move for any news outlet to delete, rather than amend or update, a story — even People, which is generally considered a friendly go-to outlet for celebrities to share their stories. When asked for further information about removing the article, a People representative pointed back to its original statement. The post was drawn from the magazine's recent interview with Munn for a cover story, which published online June 4. The 44-year-old actress, who was promoting her new Apple TV+ series, talked about life with her husband, 42-year-old comedian John Mulaney, their children — a 3-year-old boy and 8-month-old girl — as well as her 2023 breast cancer diagnosis. People also published several separate exclusive items using material from the Munn interview, including one in which she discussed her fertility treatments, and another post headlined, 'Olivia Munn Doesn't Let Her Kids Watch Ms. Rachel. Here's Why.' In the story, according to sites that repeated quotes from it before it was deleted, Munn shared her irritation with children's TV programming. She specifically cited Ms. Rachel, a major celebrity to young children and their parents. 'I know kids love [Ms. Rachel], but the thing is, if I can't watch it, I'm not going to spend the rest of my life going crazy,' Munn said, and added she was not a fan of 'Blue's Clues' or 'Spider-Man' either. (She did admit a tolerance for 'Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood,' because it helped her son prepare for the arrival of a baby sister.) However, the framing of the People headline drew attention on social media, especially given that Ms. Rachel, whose full name is Rachel Griffin Accurso, has been in the news for speaking out about the plight of children in Gaza — though it's unclear if this topic was even addressed in the People story. All of this was surely heightened by the strong feelings many fans harbor about Mulaney and Munn's relationship, and its timing relative to his divorce from an artist, Anna Marie Tendler, with her own significant social media following. Various publications and social media accounts started regurgitating Munn's comments, and Accurso herself expressed disappointment when she left a comment on People's Instagram post, now disappeared as well: 'WHO CARES?! I'd rather you cover me advocating for kids in Gaza who are literally starving, largest cohort of child amputees in modern history, thousands & thousands killed — no medical care, no education, no homes… do better!!!' Accurso wrote, according to multiple reports. 'Not against [Munn] at all and don't care that she doesn't want to watch the show — all my love to her and her family — disappointed in the outlets.' Later, she wrote on her own Instagram account that she and Munn had spoken and were on good terms. 'Please be kind to Olivia & her precious family,' Accurso wrote. 'I don't believe in hate, attacks or hurtful comments.' Munn also criticized the coverage. 'To Ms Rachel and your fans, I hear and respect the passion behind your support. I never anticipated the media would single out one small thing I said and distort it like they have,' she wrote in an Instagram story earlier this week. 'Every parent understands the importance of finding meaningful programming that helps us connect with our kids. I don't want something taken out of context to be a moment that steals even a minute of joy for anyone.' Mulaney weighed in Wednesday, calling for a stop to the 'violent and threatening' comments that Munn had been receiving in online comments and direct messages. 'An innocent comment my wife Olivia Munn made about what children's programs we like has somehow — unbelievably — been conflated with not caring about the deaths of children in Gaza,' he posted on Instagram. 'The people doing this are so wildly out of line and so unhelpful to any conversation. You took a nothing comment to a dark and dangerous place. This kind of behavior isn't activism.' Accurso has been creating educational children's content on YouTube, where she has more than 15.2 million subscribers, since 2019. With the help of silly and cheerful music, Ms. Rachel teaches children how to spell and use the bathroom, while also offering lessons on emotional support. Outside of her YouTube show, Accurso has been outspoken about Gaza, which led to backlash from right-wing media commentators and StopAntisemitism, a prominent pro-Israel group, which called on the U.S. attorney general to investigate the children's entertainer. (Accurso said earlier this month that she stands against 'all forms of hate.') But, Accurso told WBUR, 'I wouldn't be Ms. Rachel if I didn't deeply care about all kids. And I would risk everything, and I will risk my career over and over to stand up for them.'
