Coastal Carolina University to host International Gullah Geechee and African Diaspora Conference
CONWAY, S.C. (WBTW) — Coastal Carolina University will host the annual International Gullah Geechee and African Diaspora 2025 Conference, which will feature performances, activities, and more, a news release said.
The conference will be held from Feb. 20-22 at Coastal Carolina University, with Conway Community Day happening from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 22 throughout the city.
The university's Charles Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies will host the event, with the theme 'Reconstruction Through the Lens of Gullah Geechee and Communities within the African Diaspora.'
The conference brings together scholars, artists, and culture keepers in the African Diaspora, including international participants, performers, and regional community leaders.
The event will hold academic sessions, as well as a community day, featuring free exhibits, talks, vendors, and activities.
This year's IGGAD will feature an emphasis on international connections and regional partnerships, with a panel exploring the connections between people of the Maroon culture in Suriname, and the Gullah Geechee people of the southeastern United States.
'It will be a wonderful culture exchange on display,' Zenobia Harper, director of the Joyner Institute and Gullah artist and community member said. 'These are two separate groups of people that are coming together to talk about rice – the thing that binds them to each other and also to West Africa.'
Val Littlefield, interim director of the Center for the Study of the Reconstruction Period at the University of South Carolina-Beaufort, will deliver a keynote lecture at the opening dinner of the event on Feb. 20.
'We're working hard to partner with other institutes and organizations that are doing the work of preserving Gullah Geechee and African American history and experiences,' Harper said. 'I'm really happy about that.'

The King Neighborhood Welcomes Portland's First Upscale Balkan Restaurant
One of the Portland area's most promising chefs is about to take his pop-up to its permanent location. Vedran Jordan will host the grand opening for his Alma on Friday, June 13. Jordan's run to this opening is the stuff of modern-day restaurant fable: He came to the country as a 12-year-old refugee from Sarajevo, cut his teeth cooking at Bamboo Sushi, Gado Gado, Oma's Hideaway, with chef Gregory Gourdet at Kann, and then opened Alma in honor of his mother. Getting ready for the Balkan restaurant's opening, he's focused on making sure the kitchen lives up to all that hype. 'I feel extremely lucky to have the crew that I have,' Jordan says. 'Currently, everyone is really putting everything they have into it. I really can't be more thankful.' The food and drink at the reservation-only restaurant include a suite of 'Ottoman-era' dishes. Since announcing the debut, a few more items have been added to the opening roster. The imam bayildi is a particular highlight in Jordan's mind, a half-roasted eggplant marinated overnight in water with added Vegeta — sort of like a 'Bosnian MSG,' Jordan says — before the innards are scooped out and tossed with aromatics, chilies, and tomatoes. It's then served with toum yogurt and green zhoug. The kanpachi crudo arrives dressed in black Moroccan salt, housemade citrus kosho, and ginger, the fish itself sourced from local purveyor Aji Fish Butchery. The baba ghanoush and lamb shank are no small feats, either. The drinks at Alma are thoughtfully prepared by beverage director Chris Mateja, formerly of Nightingale. Liquors from all over, including South America and the Balkans, feature on the vibrant, bright cocktails. There are three rakias on the menu, too. Rakia is a Balkan fruit brandy, and at Alma, grape, plum, and a secret third flavor are all featured, with three more coming down the road. The spirits are custom-made for the restaurant by Andy Garrison from Tuff Talk Distilling. Mostly, the restaurant — a pretty space in the King neighborhood — is meant to be a positive impact on the community. During the first week, five percent of all sales proceeds will be donated to The Sameer Project, a donations-based aid initiative led by Palestinians. On the local level, Jeremy Fong works as the chef de cuisine, Mo Morales as sous chef, and Emily Gilmer as general manager. This cast of characters is just as important to Jordan as any other part of the business; he says, if he's lucky, Alma will be known for its hard working, compassionate pros. 'Something that's very sustainable,' he says, 'I want to make sure people are pursuing their passions and always learning.' To announce the partnership, Hilton shared a personal photo of herself breastfeeding one of her three children via Instagram on Friday, June 6. Here's How You Can Watch 'Sinners' In The UK, At Home Now
Following the success of Black Panther and Creed, director Ryan Coogler returns with Sinners, an original vampire thriller. Set in 1930s Mississippi and starring Michael B. Jordan in a dual role, the film unfolds as both a supernatural tale and an exploration of family, tradition, and Black Southern culture. FIND OUT MORE ON ELLE COLLECTIVE Sinners marks the fifth collaboration between Coogler and Jordan. This time, Jordan plays twin brothers—Smoke and Stack—who return to their hometown hoping to leave their past behind. But what awaits them is even more: a town haunted by vampires and other monsters. Despite the high-concept premise, Coogler sought to root the film in raw emotion. Inspired by the loss of his uncle James and the family stories he heard growing up, Sinners merges bold, stylized filmmaking with deeply personal history. 'For me, the movie started with my relationship with my uncle who is from Mississippi,' Coogler told LeBron James in a conversation for Interview Magazine. 'He was the older male figure in my life... When I was working on Creed in 2015, he passed away. I had already made a film about the Bay with Fruitvale [Station], I was making a movie about Philly, I made a couple of movies about Wakanda, and now I'm coming back home in a different way. I'm looking at the American South, which is, outside of the continent of Africa, where Black people call home.' Though it tackles themes of Black displacement, resistance, and resilience, Sinners also makes space for humor, tenderness, and lots of blood. 'At first I thought Sinners was going to be a small genre film, but [the more] I learned I was like, 'Oh, this thing has to actually be massive' for it to feel right, to do it justice,' Coogler told IndieWire. There is yet to be confirmation on where you'll be able to stream Sinners for free in the UK (well, free once you've paid for your subscription of course...). In the US, the film will stream on Max this year, but it's not clear what that means for its UK distribution In the meantime, viewers can buy or rent the film at home on Prime Video, Apple TV+ and all other digital retailers.
