Angola: Mass protests over rising prices
Anti-government protests in the Angolan capital Luanda on July 12 were met with a harsh crackdown, resulting in injuries and arrests.
"We recorded several injuries, some serious and requiring medical attention," Adilson Manuel, an activist and one of the organizers, told DW.
"In addition to the injured, there were also arrests. One protester remains in police custody without a clear reason. He is currently held at the Nova Vida police station and will be handed over to the Public Prosecutor's Office for questioning."
The protests began peacefully in Sao Paulo Square, a neighbourhood in Luanda. Hundreds of citizens — activists, civil society members, taxi drivers, vendors, students and opposition party members — joined a march organized by a social movement against a government decree that raised fuel prices.
Chants filled the air, including the national anthem and improvised songs such as "First Angolan, second Angolan, always Angolan." Protesters criticized the ruling MPLA party, carrying signs with slogans like "MPLA drank all the oil," "We're tired of eating from the trash," and "The country is good, but the MPLA is no good."
The MPLA, or People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola party, has governed Angola continuously since its independence 50 years ago.

Rising prices push Angolans to the limit
Taxi fares increased to 300 kwanzas per trip ($0.33, €0.28), and urban bus fares rose to 200 kwanzas on July 7. This followed a fuel price increase from 300 to 400 kwanzas per liter three days earlier in the country that is one of Africa's largest oil producers.
In recent years, Angola has cut fuel subsidies, also under pressure from the International Monetary Fund , over the burden it was putting on the state budgets. Though Angola has some of the cheapest gasoline prices in the world even after the removal of the subsidies, street vendors and taxi drivers have borne the brunt of the price hikes, sparking frequent protests.
However, rising fuel prices are not the only critical issue for many Angolans. Just weeks ago, students mobilized to protest government policies.
Schools lack basic necessities such as chairs, desks and toilets. A new youth movement called the "Movimento dos Estudantes Angolanos" (MEA) organized protests and strikes, accusing President Joao Lourenco's government of ignoring youth concerns. Instead of addressing their needs, the government recently raised university tuition fees.
The young protesters warned: "Either the government changes the situation, or it will be overthrown."
Broader discontent with ruling party
Also, during the latest protests over fuel prices, many voiced frustrations against Lourenco and the ruling MPLA party. Protesters marching to Largo da Maianga, near the National Assembly, were blocked by police at Primeiro de Maio and Largo da Independencia squares.
"Please help us. We are hungry, the whole country is hungry, but our president is not paying attention to this situation," Agostinho Kipanda, one of the protesters, told a DW reporter.
Despite police repression, organizers have announced plans for further protests. Activist Laura Macedo is calling on citizens to stay home as a form of peaceful resistance.
"Please, let's make an effort. Nobody leaves the house. Let's show our discontent while we prepare the next march for Saturday," Macedo said.
The protest leaders have vowed to continue until the government reverses its decision to increase fuel prices.
The government claims that the opposition is manipulating the various protest movements. Angola's next elections are scheduled for 2027, and President Lourenco is not eligible to seek a third term.

Man's body exhumed from reserve forest, 9 arrested for murder
1 2 Berhampur: Police on Thursday exhumed the body of a 35-year-old man in Kusumapur reserve forest under Gajapati district's Mohana police station limits. He was allegedly beaten to death by villagers at Kusumapur, suspecting him of practising witchcraft. The deceased, Karunakar Dalai, is a resident of Kamalapur and practised as a quack in Kusumapur. The villagers suspected Dalai of practising withcraft after a 12-year-old boy died from dog bite on July 28. Instead of rushing the boy to the hospital, they visited Dalai for treatment, and the boy died, police said. From analog to digital: Thiruvananthapuram cops switch wireless system
Thiruvananthapuram: Until recently, frequent interruptions of wireless communication created a major security threat for city police. This was especially problematic when transmitting crucial information during criminal hunts and coordinating special operations. The analog system used in the wireless sets was easy to crack and often communication was interrupted by wireless devices used by fishermen. To resolve the issue, city police have revamped their old analogue-based communication system with most advanced digital mobile radio (DMR) technology at a cost of Rs 6 crore. Recently, nearly 1,000 wireless devices on DMR technology were handed over to the law and order and traffic wings as part of the initiative. The initiative is part of a state-wide digitalisation drive and it was first implemented in Thrissur. But due to some litigation, the project was delayed and the unspent amount was later rerouted for Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi city police. While areas like Kazhakkoottam, Vizhinjam and Kovalam were out of reach of the old analog wireless system, the new devices cover the length and breadth of the city. According to police sources, the new system consists of one main control site and several other repeater sites to provide secure digital voice and data. The new DMR system offers features like real-time communication and also helps in sending photos from incident sites to control rooms. It also allows interoperability, enabling communication with other emergency services like fire, ambulance, coast guard, etc. "The work to switch over to the digital system is complete and the city police have started using it. It is more encrypted and possesses unique security features. The earlier analogue-based system had several drawbacks, including security risks and was able to be accessed by unauthorised frequencies. The new system gives full coverage of the entire city with clearer voice communication. It also reduces the risk of jamming. Since it is GPS-enabled, tracing the location of the devices is possible and it can be operated remotely," said city police commissioner Thomson Jose. He also said that even though there were some issues while switching over to the new system, all of them were properly addressed and resolved. Oklahoma Court upholds Bryce Drummond license revocation following DUI arrest
The Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals has affirmed the 180-day driver's license revocation of Bryce Drummond, the 22-year-old son of television personality Ree Drummond , following a 2024 DUI-related arrest in Stillwater.
