LUKE LITTLER is the best darts player in the world at present – but why is he not the world No.1 according to the PDC?
Midway through his second year as a professional player, The Nuke completed the Triple Crown set when he lifted the Betfred World Matchplay at Blackpool's Winter Gardens on Sunday night.

Within a 15-month period, the 18-year-old has taken possession of the Premier League Darts crown, the World Championship and now the Matchplay title – the three most prestigious and richest tournaments in the sport.
Littler is Box Office material and his 18-13 victory in the final over James Wade was secured with a three-dart average of 107.24.
That was the highest seen in the final since Phil Taylor was victorious in 2014 – the year he won his 15th of a record 16 crowns – with 107.19.
The £200,000 winner's cheque means the Warrington teen has earned £1,500,500 in ranking money since the start of January 2024.
That total does not include the HALF A MILLION pounds he has earned from competing in two editions of the Premier League.

Luke Humphries is top of the standings with £1,797,750 but the gap is only £297,250 and there is a fair chance Littler will become the official world No.1 come the end of the year.
In fact it might come sooner than that when the packed autumn schedule begins and there is a run of four major TV titles that carry lucrative cash sums.
The PDC Order of Merit is based on prize money won over a two-year period by players in ranking tournaments.

In the latter half of 2023, Humphries, 30, announced himself as the dominant figure, winning the World Grand Prix (£120,000), Grand Slam of Darts (£150,000) and Players Championship Finals (£120,000) – before lifting the Sid Waddell Trophy (£500,000) for the first time.
In total, Cool Hand Luke has to defend £890,000 prize money between October 6, 2025 and January 3, 2026.

In contrast, Littler is defending NOTHING right now because he is yet to complete a full second term in the pro ranks.
Everything he gets is a free hit and will only boost his chances of being the top oche thrower.
If Humphries were to keep losing in the early rounds – his Matchplay defence ended in round one in a 10-8 loss to Gian van Veen – and Littler continues to win, then the switch between the two Lukes will take place sooner than possible.
It might happen in November at the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton, that is assuming Humphries is knocked out early at the World Grand Prix in Leicester.

There is a strong chance come the start of the 2025/26 PDC World Darts Championships, which begins on December 11 and is now a 20-day event, then Littler will return to Ally Pally, where he was victorious in January, as the undisputed best player on the planet.
Do not forget, of course, that the prize money for the Worlds has doubled from £500,000 to £1million this time, which completely skewers the world ranking standings even more for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.

Littler has long said that his main ambitions in the sport are to win every major at least once and become world No.1.
That might happen sooner than he wants – indeed this time next year he may tick off all those targets.
Speaking on Sunday night with the Phil Taylor Trophy in his hands, Littler said that he had looked at the PDC website and had done the maths.
He said: 'The start of my career I wanted to win one of every major. There's not that many to go.
'I've looked at the rankings provisionally. I'm No.1 for the Worlds if Luke doesn't defend all that prize money.
'Obviously I don't want him to. But we'll just have to find out and try and add more money to my rankings.'
Asked if he would still have the hunger to win after potentially lifting every major title at least once, Littler replied: 'That's what everybody is probably thinking once I've won one of everything.
'But for myself, I have to build on it and get multiple of everything, triple of everything. Once I win one of everything, I won't pack it in just yet.

But the bosses at BlueCo, the company which owns both teams, are using multi-club ownership to move people and money around effectively and, so far at least, with successful results. In recent days, Chelsea have confirmed FIVE deals to take personnel across the Channel to north-east France. Goalkeeper Mike Penders, 20, and attacking midfielder Kendry Paez, 18, went on loan to Strasbourg, with young left back Ishe Samuels-Smith joining the French club in a permanent £6.5m deal. As well as losing one of their key players after just one season at the club, supporters feel the £12m fee paid by Chelsea was suspiciously low. When you look at the cost of the Amougou deals, you can see their point. Overall, the sense is that as soon as a player does well at Strasbourg, he will be moved to Chelsea to play in the first team or to be sold if he doesn't make the grade. Reports emerged last week that the Blues were close to agreeing personal terms with Strasbourg striker Emanuel Emegha, ahead of a proposed transfer to Stamford Bridge next summer. You wonder whether any other clubs will be allowed to challenge Chelsea in the bidding for Emegha, who was the Ligue 1 club's top scorer last season. The Blues and Aston Villa have already been warned by Uefa that transfers between the two clubs will be closely monitored for fair value, after the shenanigans of summer 2024. Alexandre Hummel, spokesperson for the Strasbourg Supporters' Club, said: 'With the Sarr move, we are not being allowed to sell in a free market to the highest-bidding team. 'WIth that situation, with Penders and Petrovic, even with the coach who is coming, this is the way that a feeder team is run in US sport. 'Everything is done for the benefit of Chelsea.' BlueCo - the consortium of US-based trio Clearlake Capital, Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, plus Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss - bought a controlling stake in Strasbourg in June 2023, a year after completing their takeover of Chelsea. The French club was always going to be the junior partner in the set-up, just as happens in other multi-club ownership structures like the City Football Group which controls Manchester City and a portfolio of other clubs. But Strasbourg have finished higher in the league in each season of BlueCo ownership and in 2025/6 will enjoy their first proper campaign of European football for 20 years. So it's tempting to ask: what's the problem? Everyone's a winner. And the majority of Strasbourg fans seem to feel that way, for now at least. The multi-club ownership system is not part of the tradition of European football. Alexandre Hummel Hummel, 43, and a Strasbourg fan for 35 years, said: 'I would say that 60 or 70% of people are either non-sensitive to the question or just happy to have good results on the pitch. 'But the organised supporters' groups do not agree with the fact that Strasbourg is being used basically as a reserve team or an U23 team for Chelsea. 'It means our club is no longer independent and no matter what the sporting results on the field are, we feel very bad about that because we value independence. 'The multi-club ownership system is not part of the tradition of European football. 'We have a rich history between the local regional identity and the football club. 'That doesn't fit with having your club being used as some kind of subsidiary to a big empire which is owned by private equity firms in the US. 'There's a lot of arrogance in that. If it was us Europeans telling them how to run the NBA or the NFL, they would laugh at us. 'The French league could become a feeder league and French football would die because of that.' Strasbourg fans have held peaceful protests against BlueCo and the ultras refuse to sing for the first 15 minutes of every game. On top of all the comings and goings between Stamford Bridge and the Stade de la Meinau, Strasbourg have also sold homegrown star midfielder to Sunderland for £30m this summer. Some of those happy with the current situation could change their tune if results deteriorate after the core of last season's successful team has been moved on. But as Hummel admits, people from Strasbourg and the wider Alsace region are renowned for being calm and sensible. The BlueCo bosses would have a much harder time if they tried to pull the same trick in Marseille or Naples. Ruben Amorim's side have been linked with a host of strikers including Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson and RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko. There's growing belief they could bring in another frontman to help Rasmus Hojlund carry the load. But Littler is of the view that United should go in for a swap deal involving Watkins and say goodbye to Garnacho.
