Ravi Chhabriya opens up on debut film Detective Sherdil, Bond with ‘cuteheart' Diljit Dosanjh and Knives Out comparisons
In an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times, Chhabriya opened up about stepping into direction with Detective Sherdil, his experience working with Diljit Dosanjh, and addressed the comparisons being drawn between his film and the popular Hollywood whodunnit Knives Out.
Ravi reveals what made him choose Detective Sherdil has his directorial debut and said, "There are so many whodunnuit's that has happened here and in the West but I felt, we have all grown up watching Gupt, Byomkesh Bakshi, kind of films, so many great whoddunuit that happened here, so I wanted to make a very great and entertaining detective film which I thought was not happening for a long time. Me and Ali had a very good script we were playing on and so we decided to make something differently."
Ravi further revealed if he was nervous about his debut and said, "Every day is a test, whether it's 1st film or the 10th film. The anxiety and nervousness is always there. If the surroundings is not giving you a test, you might give yourself a test. But it's just about being focused. If you are focused enough and believe in yourself, that's enough. You should always go with your gut. So I am all about instincts. So I was very happy and looking forward to it. The kind of prep that happened between the actors and me, I just knew that I had to just put the camera and start shooting. So it was more excitement than nervousness." Ravi Chhabriya on working with Diljit Dosanjh
Talking about working with Diljit Dosanjh, Ravi said, "Diljit paaji is such a humble person. Not for a single minute he made me feel a pressure of kind. He was so easy and good on set. He used to be all giving. There was zero pressure from him. I call him cuteheart. He is very cute. We had a relationship that he could come and tell me something after the shot and I could do it too. The way we shot the film was very quick. We made the film in less than 32 days. I don't think anybody can execute a film like this if there's no relationship with the cast."
During an episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show, Imtiaz Ali revealed that Shah Rukh Khan told him Diljit is the best actor in the country. Ravi agreed to it and said, "It's plus triple one on that. Paaji is outstanding as an actor. I used to tell him on set that you are such a good actor. I am very shy as a person and he is also very shy so we could understand each other. Instinctively, it used to come to me naturally to go after a take and tell him that you are such a good actor and he used to be shy about it. He would just smile and say thank you. That's what makes him great, that he is so real. For the world he is a global star but he is such a humble and real person and it also translates on screen." Ravi Chhabriya on Detective Sherdil's comparison to Knives Out
When asked if he took inspiration from Knives Out, Ravi said, "Actually not at all, we were writing it way before and I don't even vaguely remember when we all watched Knives Out. But to be honest, Knives Out is a great film, and every film is a piece of art, so if one art is being compared to a greater art, it's kind of a compliment. And the moment everyone watches the film, they'll realise how different we are from Knives Out. It's very different."
He concluded, "It's my baby. Films are like your own children and everybody's child is different. Our baby is different because they way I have edited, to create a balance so that the younger audience also like it. So I have tried to cut the film in a way that it hooks the audience and also give you the soul of the film. I would say the treatement is new."

Spice of life: Mama's boys who went on to conquer the world
punamsidhu@ Vikas Khanna traces his Michelin-starred journey back to the kitchens of Amritsar. Born with clubfoot, that made even walking difficult until his teenage years, Khanna discovered strength, and joy, in cooking alongside his mother, Bindu Khanna. (Hindustan Times) When two men stand out not just for their immense success but for something much softer — an unabashed devotion to their mothers, it makes news. Prabal Gurung, fashion's vibrant storyteller, and Vikas Khanna, culinary maestro behind Manhattan's beloved Bungalow, both proudly wear their identities as mama's boys. Their journeys, though different, are woven with the same thread of tenderness. Gurung, raised in Nepal and who trained in India with Manish Arora, credits his mother Durga Rana, for nurturing his creative spirit. Durga, who owned a boutique, became his earliest muse, critic, and fervent champion. Despite the relentless demands of dressing Michelle Obama, Kate Middleton, Beyonce and countless celebrities gracing red carpets, Gurung never misses calling his mother in Nepal every single day. It's his lifeline, grounding him in a love that's steady and resilient. In interviews, Gurung reflects on how profoundly she shaped his fearless approach to design, and his willingness to speak his mind through fashion. His memoir, Walk Like a Girl, narrates the story of a queer boy who yearned for a world beyond the confines of prejudice he experienced growing up. Similarly, Vikas Khanna traces his Michelin-starred journey back to the kitchens of Amritsar. Born with clubfoot, that made even walking difficult until his teenage years, Khanna discovered strength, and joy, in cooking alongside his mother, Bindu Khanna. Those childhood days spent preparing food for kitty parties were profound life lessons in generosity and warmth. Khanna carried these lessons to New York City, earning acclaim by transforming childhood comfort foods into refined culinary experiences at Junoon and now Bungalow, delighting the palates of Manhattan's elite. Yet, despite his international acclaim, he remains lovingly grounded: His mother still gently reminds him, 'Beta, you might have a Michelin star, but are you eating enough?' When Vikas speaks of Bindu, or his late sister Radha, his voice inevitably softens, acknowledging them as the emotional anchor behind every dish he thoughtfully creates. It's said that behind every genuinely good man lies the warmth and wisdom instilled by his mother's love. Today, both men live far from their childhood homes yet remain tethered to the values their mothers instilled. Gurung weaves empathy and social consciousness into every garment he designs, while Khanna plates authenticity, and heritage into each culinary creation. In a city often perceived as cold and relentless, Gurung and Khanna remind us that their success isn't measured merely by accolades or fame, but by the enduring bonds they nurture with the women who first believed in their dreams. Beyond the familiar doctor-engineer narrative, there's a message for parents that nurturing children's dreams and innate talents can become the foundation for extraordinary success. And both men would undoubtedly agree, the strongest foundation upon which ambition rests is always a mother's love. (The writer is a Chandigarh-based former Indian Revenue Service officer)

When Archana Puran Singh revealed her laughter was used to lift weak jokes on Comedy Circus; says 'I have a loud laugh, but that doesn't mean I have an irrational or silly laugh'
Archana Puran Singh , known for her loud laugh and as a judge on Comedy Circus, once shared that the show's makers often edited and added her laughter in the episodes to make weak jokes look funnier. In an old interview with Times of India TV, Archana shared how she was very upset about the same and sternly communicated it to the Comedy Circus team. Speaking about it, Archana had shared in our old interview, "What happened in Comedy Circus really affected how people see me. It was the first show of its kind and ran for a very long time. Comedy is tough, and during some episodes, the jokes didn't land well. So the team would rely on my laughter. They thought, 'If we add Archana's laugh here, people will find it funny.' They started taking my genuine laughter from other jokes and placing it over weak ones just to make them seem better. They did this for a long time, and I had a serious problem with it. I got really upset and told the production house clearly, 'You can't do this. I won't laugh just for the sake of it.'' In the same interview, Archana admitted that she has a loud laugh, but also clarified that she doesn't have an irrational, idiotic laugh, "Maine keh diya tha, 'Main hasungi hi nahi, toh edit kaise karoge?' They did this for around 4 to 6 months in the beginning, and then slowly reduced it. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like AirSense 11 – Smart tech for deep sleep ResMed Buy Now Undo But the damage was done. viewers only saw me laughing. The other judges who didn't laugh, their reactions were never used. Only clips of me laughing loudly were shown. Yes, I agree I have a loud laugh, but that doesn't mean I have an irrational or silly laugh. I don't laugh at every joke. I'm an educated, intelligent person who understands humour. But because of all this editing, people now believe Archana laughs at anything. The truth is, I do laugh a lot and I laugh loudly, I fully accept that. But I don't laugh at bad jokes. As a professional, it's my responsibility to uplift a performer's act, but that doesn't mean I'll fake my reactions." Archana is currently seen as a co-judge on The Great Indian Kapil Show season 3 along with Navjot Singh Sidhu. Archana recently touched on the same topic in her latest Vlog. I did one episode, but then I didn't have dates for the next. For me, once I've made a commitment, I want to stick to it.
