This iPhone case switches Lightning ports to USB-C
'This time, I'm turning that one-off DIY mod into a real product you can own,' Pillonel said in the description of his latest YouTube video. 'This isn't just a hack anymore; it's the biggest project I've ever done.'
The iPhone case is available for 'most models' starting today via obsoless.com, with pricing set between $45-$55. Features include support for MagSafe charging, data transfers to computers, CarPlay, and 9V fast charging. In Pillonel's previous 2021 USB-C hack, fast charging was only activated if the cable was facing the right way, but now fast charging is supported no matter how it's plugged in. Other features available to Lightning and USB-C may not be supported, however.
'I guarantee the following: Fast charging, data transfers to computers, and CarPlay. Anything else is not officially supported and you'll need to remove the case to use it, sadly,' Pillonel told The Verge. 'This is because Apple has locked down the adapters for Lightning phones, so that they can earn a commission on all adapters sold.'
The phone case also includes an extra SIM card storage slot that's convenient for travelling overseas, and a lanyard attachment. It's available in dark gray at launch, and Pillonel says that more color options will be available in September.
Pillonel has previously modified other Lightning-based products to have USB-C ports, including AirPods and AirPods Max. Like the commercially available cases for AirPods that Pillonel launched in October last year, the iPhone cases are designed to prevent users from having to carry around an extra cable or USB-C adapter.

Release Date: August 13, 2025 For the complete transcript of the earnings call, please refer to the full earnings call transcript. Positive Points Coherent Corp (NYSE:COHR) reported a 23% increase in full-year revenue, reaching a record $5.81 billion, driven by strong growth in data center and communications business. The company achieved a gross margin expansion of 358 basis points, leading to a threefold increase in non-GAAP EPS over the prior year. Coherent Corp (NYSE:COHR) saw a 51% revenue growth in the data center and communications market for fiscal '25, with a 39% year-over-year increase in Q4. The company began initial revenue shipments of its new 1.6T Transceivers and expects volumes to ramp throughout the year, with more meaningful contributions in calendar '26. Coherent Corp (NYSE:COHR) announced a new multi-year agreement with Apple for Vixel products, expected to generate revenue starting in the second half of calendar '26. Negative Points The industrial-related markets saw a revenue decrease of 2% for the year, with a 2% sequential and 8% year-over-year decline in fiscal Q4. The company experienced a drop in silicon carbide demand during fiscal '25, which was a headwind to overall industrial revenue. Coherent Corp (NYSE:COHR) is taking a cautious view on the broad-based industrial market due to macroeconomic uncertainties and tariff concerns. The sequential decline in Q4 gross margin was primarily driven by unfavorable foreign exchange impacts. The company announced the sale of its aerospace and defense business, which contributed to a reduction in revenue and employee count. Q & A Highlights Q: How should we think about the growth outlook for Coherent's data center business in fiscal '26? A: Jim Anderson, CEO, highlighted that Coherent experienced strong growth in fiscal '25, with data center revenue increasing over 60%. Looking forward, the demand outlook remains strong, driven by the ramp of 800 gig and 1.6T transceivers, as well as the optical circuit switch (OCS) product. Coherent expects sequential growth in data center and communications for the upcoming quarter. Q: Can you provide an update on the ramp of the 6-inch indium phosphide platform in Sherman, Texas, and its significance? A: Jim Anderson, CEO, stated that production of the 6-inch indium phosphide line began in August. This platform is expected to significantly increase capacity and reduce costs, providing a competitive advantage. The US manufacturing footprint is a strategic advantage, as evidenced by the expanded partnership with Apple, which will contribute to revenue in the second half of calendar '26. Q: What product categories might be down sequentially at the midpoint of your guidance? A: Jim Anderson, CEO, mentioned that while data center and communications are expected to be up sequentially, industrial-related markets are anticipated to be flat to down, partly due to macroeconomic uncertainties and tariffs. However, over the long term, industrial segments are seen as growth opportunities. Q: Can you discuss the competitive landscape for the optical circuit switch (OCS) and its advantages? A: Jim Anderson, CEO, explained that Coherent's OCS uses digital liquid crystal technology, which is non-mechanical and offers higher reliability compared to traditional MEMS-based solutions. This reliability is crucial for AI data centers, and Coherent is seeing strong customer engagement and demand for the product. Q: How is Coherent addressing the competitive dynamics in the transceiver market, particularly with Chinese competitors? A: Jim Anderson, CEO, noted that Coherent believes it gained market share in fiscal '25, especially in higher data rate transceivers. The company is well-positioned due to its technology roadmap and resilient supply chain, which includes US manufacturing and vertical integration. Pricing has been as expected, and Coherent is ramping capacity to meet demand. For the complete transcript of the earnings call, please refer to the full earnings call transcript. These displays are banned in US, and here's how it affects Pixel 10 and iPhone 17
Joe Maring / Android Authority TL;DR The International Trade Commission has decided to ban BOE's OLED screens from the US. However, a display expert says companies like Apple and Google can still sell devices with BOE screens in the US. The ruling could adversely affect the repair market, though. The International Trade Commission (ITC) recently ruled that it would ban display maker BOE's OLED screens from the US market. The ban, which isn't final, could see BOE banned from the country for almost 15 years. But what does this mean for smartphone makers like Apple, Google, and others that use BOE displays? Display analyst Ross Young noted on Twitter that the ban could have 'little impact' on brands like Apple and Google as they'd still be able to sell their phones in the US. Check out the tweet below. Unfortunately, Young adds that this ban would hurt the repair market. That's bad news for consumers, as it means they might not have recourse in the event of a broken phone screen. Even if you can get your display fixed in the first place, a limited supply of replacement screens could theoretically lead to much higher screen repair costs. This could be particularly problematic for upcoming phone releases, as manufacturers and repair agents might not have the chance to stockpile replacement screens. Set us as a preferred source in Google Search to support us and make sure you never miss our latest exclusive reports, expert analysis, and much more. We also asked OnePlus earlier this week about the ramifications of a BOE ban in the US. However, the company refused to comment on the matter. If Young's claims hold true, though, then OnePlus doesn't necessarily have to worry about OnePlus 15 sales. Either way, this preliminary display ban might not affect sales of smartphones with BOE screens. So I don't anticipate sales issues with the Pixel 10 series or iPhone 17 range. But you should probably invest in a durable case and a screen protector. Follow

One Tech Tip: This summer, don't let your phone overheat
LONDON (AP) — The summer holidays are here and many of us will heading off on trips to hot and sunny destinations, and bringing our electronic devices along. But don't forget that phones, tablets and other electronics are vulnerable to extreme heat. Southern European nations like Spain, Italy and Greece have been baking under the sun, while forecasters have consistently issued heat advisories across the United States, particularly in the Southeast. Here's what device makers and experts say on keeping your electronics cool: What heat does to a phone: Most electronic devices work best in a specific temperature range. Apple says iPhones and iPads are designed to be used in temperatures between 32-95 degrees Fahrenheit (0-35 degrees Celsius). A device might change its behavior to deal with extreme temperatures, Apple warns. 'Using an iOS or iPadOS device in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life.' Your phone might temporarily warm up if you're charging wirelessly, downloading big files, streaming high-quality video or doing anything else that requires lots of power or data. Samsung says that's normal and it won't affect the performance or battery lifespan. What happens if the device gets too hot If your phone gets so hot that it becomes uncomfortable to hold, Samsung recommends that you stop using it. An overheating iPhone will alert users with a warning message that it needs to cool down before it can be used. Android devices will display a similar message, telling user that the screen will dim, apps will be closed and charging will be paused. What not to do There are things you can do to protect your device from high heat. Don't leave it in a car on hot day and don't leave it in direct sunlight for long. Apple also warns against using some features when it's very hot or in direct sunlight for long periods, like GPS navigation when driving, playing a graphics-heavy video game or using the camera. Google, which makes Pixel Android phones, advises users not to use resource-intensive features or apps while charging. Keep your gear cool The best thing you can do in extreme heat is turn off your device completely. 'Even background processes can generate heat,' say experts at British electronics chain Curry's. 'A full shutdown helps it cool faster.' Remove the case, if your phone or tablet has one, because they can trap heat. Also keep it out of direct sunlight and put it somewhere cool, like an air-conditioned room or in front of a fan. But be careful about putting it in cool places. 'Never put your device in the fridge or freezer, as condensation can cause water damage,' Curry's says. ___ Is there a tech topic that you think needs explaining?
