Man City vs Wydad prediction, odds and betting offer
Man City will be looking to put their season behind them and finish it on a high note as they start their Club World Cup group stage campaign
Manchester City, the football giants, commence their journey in the FIFA Club World Cup with a few fresh faces in the squad as Pep Guardiola sets sight on another trophy. They're set to face off against Wydad, a Moroccan team, at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field.
There's a clear expectation for Pep Guardiola's team to be victorious and with a fair bit of ease at that. After all, we're talking about a Premier League heavyweight going against a team from the Moroccan top flight - quite the mismatch on paper. The City side is riding high, coming off the back of two consecutive league victories which have secured them third place and a ticket into next season's UEFA Champions League. While this might be seen as an underachievement considering their usual lofty ambitions, it's still a notable feat.
On the other hand, Wydad hasn't been enjoying the best of times recently, having suffered back-to-back 1-0 losses in friendlies against Sevilla and Porto. However, it's worth noting that Porto will also be participating in the CWC. Despite these setbacks, Wydad had been on a roll in their domestic league with three consecutive wins and an unbeaten streak that dates back to December.
But let's not kid ourselves, Manchester City is an entirely different beast and Wydad will need more than just luck to overcome them. Anything less than a win for the Cityzens would indeed be a major upset.

Manchester City start Club World Cup campaign with comfortable win
But the Group G encounter ended on a sour note for the Premier League outfit as Lewis was shown a straight red card for catching an opponent in the face in a challenge two minutes from time. The incident changed the mood of what had been a professional performance by City in hot and humid conditions. Lincoln Financial Field, home of the reigning Super Bowl champions Philadelphia Eagles, was at nowhere near its 67,594 capacity – something which has been a recurring theme in the early days of the tournament – but the atmosphere generated by the 37,446 present was still lively. The Wydad supporters, massed in red behind one of the goals with flags and a percussionist, brought a particular vibrancy and their enthusiasm perhaps deserved better their side conceding so early. Yet it was the perfect start for City. Manager Pep Guardiola opted to hand debuts to two of his new signings in Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki while some big stars, including Erling Haaland and Rodri, began on the bench. Wydad Casablanca fans were entertaining at a half-full Lincoln Financial Field (Derik Hamilton/AP) Foden, looking to make a fresh start after an underwhelming 2024-25 season, was quick to step up and take responsibility. The midfielder was in the right place to turn home after Savinho's deflected cross from the right was pushed into his direction by goalkeeper El Medhi Benabid. Omar Marmoush shot wide soon after but Wydad, the most successful team in their country's history with 22 league titles, responded well. Mohamed Moufid got behind the City defence and Thembinkosi Lorch was close to getting on the end of his dangerous ball inside before later attempting to catch Ederson off his line from distance. 1 minute, 51 seconds. He did manage to lay off to Cassius Mailula, but Ederson parried his effort. City should have doubled their lead when Cherki picked out Foden in front of goal, but Benabid produced a fine save. Foden quickly made amends by delivering the corner from which Doku broke free to volley in City's second three minutes before the break. Doku could have had another after seizing on a defensive error, but Benabid turned away his shot. Doubling our lead ⚡️🩵 — Manchester City (@ManCity) June 18, 2025 City's largely American following may not have replicated the chanting of the Etihad Stadium, however, they greeted the entrances of Rodri and Haaland on the hour with fervour. Haaland went close when he wrong-footed two defenders, but fired over from the edge of the area. The game appeared to be winding down when Lewis sparked controversy with a challenge on Samuel Obeng. The City defender won the ball as he slid in but caught Obeng in his follow through and was promptly dismissed, much to Guardiola's fury on the touchline.

Pep Guardiola says referee's decision to dismiss Rico Lewis was ‘unnecessary'
Pep Guardiola leapt to the defence of Rico Lewis after the Manchester City defender's 'unnecessary' sending-off in their Club World Cup opener on Wednesday. Lewis was dismissed two minutes from the end of an otherwise satisfactory 2-0 victory over Wydad Casablanca in humid conditions in Philadelphia. The England international won the ball when he slid into a challenge with Samuel Obeng, but caught his opponent in the face in his follow through. City manager Guardiola was angered by the Brazilian referee Ramon Abatti's decision and later spoke to the official. Guardiola said: 'He thought the leg was a little bit high, but he was on the grass. He touched the ball. 'For the speed they go to touch the ball – for the Newton's theory your leg has to be a little bit higher and the other player was down. Rico had no intention. 'Rico is the person who never has intention to hurt anyone for his style of play. 'It was unnecessary, honestly, the red card, but the referee had a different opinion and he's the boss. They checked VAR, so we accept it.' The Lewis incident took the gloss off an otherwise professional performance in the Group G opener, won with goals from Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku at the beginning and end of the first half. Guardiola said: 'It's so hot. It's not easy, for all the teams. We had good moments with many new players. 'The first game in the group stage is always really, really important. We started really well. After we had some problems, especially when we lost some simple balls but I saw many good things. 'It was the first game, now we prepare for the next one. Everybody will have to improve because it's so demanding, and it's going to happen.' Guardiola handed debuts to new signings Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki but it was Foden who proved their inspiration, pouncing on a rebound for the opener on two minutes and then setting up Doku's second. Foden endured an underwhelming 2024-25 campaign, but was recently stood down from England duty to refresh for the tournament. Guardiola said: 'He was really good. It was a good delivery for the second and the first, always he is there. 'We are pretty pleased and he was playing a position where he has to defend too as a holding midfielder.' City will now return to their training base in Miami before travelling to Atlanta for their next game against Al Ain of Abu Dhabi on Sunday (Monday morning UK time).
