Marine Corps holds large-scale amphibious landing drills in Pohang

Korea Herald28-04-2025
The Marine Corps said Monday it staged regular amphibious landing drills in a southeastern coastal city as part of efforts to maintain combat readiness.
The drills took place at a coastal area in Pohang, about 270 kilometers southeast of Seoul, mobilizing some 3,200 troops, KF-16 fighter jets and various Navy vessels, including the ROKS Marado amphibious assault ship, according to the Marine Corps.
Troops first scouted the area using reconnaissance drones before landing on the coast aboard amphibious assault vehicles as they fended off simulated threats from exploding enemy drones, it said.
The drills also focused on removing obstacles and securing a path at the coastal area by deploying combat engineers and mobilizing armored bulldozers and mine clearing equipment. (Yonhap)

S. Korea registers 2nd hottest July on record

South Korea experienced its second hottest July on record this year as sweltering heat waves and tropical nights gripped the nation, the weather agency said Tuesday. The average nationwide temperature last month stood at 27.1 C, marking the second-highest ever for July since nationwide weather observations began in 1973, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration. The nation experienced its hottest July in 1994, when the average temperature reached 27.7 C. Last month, the country reported 14.5 days of heat waves -- when the daily maximum temperature exceeds 33 C -- marking the third most for July, behind 17.7 days in 1994 and 15.4 days in 2018. South Korea also recorded 6.7 tropical nights last month, marking the fourth most on record. The country began seeing high temperatures in early July, driven by the earlier-than-usual influence of the North Pacific high-pressure system. It suffered more heat waves toward the end of the month due to the dual influences of the North Pacific high and the Tibetan high. The nation experienced heavy downpours between the heat waves in early and late July, receiving 249 millimeters of rain in total last month, less than the long-term average of 296.5 mm for July. Weather service says heat waves to become more severe

Heat waves gripping South Korea over the past weeks are expected to intensify in coming days, the state weather service said Wednesday, with daytime highs set to range from 32 C to 38 C nationwide. Seogwipo of the southern Jeju Island experienced a 15th consecutive tropical night Tuesday, while Seoul's tropical night entered the 10th consecutive day, the Korea Meteorological Administration said. The heat waves will become more severe through this weekend and the temperatures will not cool down at night, as the nation continues to be covered by a double layer of high pressure, the KMA said. On top of the dual influences of the North Pacific high and the Tibetan high, hot and humid southeasterly winds have also been blowing into the peninsula over the past week. The southeasterly winds are expected to blow even stronger due to a typhoon currently moving northwest in the sea southeast of Shanghai, China, the KMA said. Temperatures will soar to 38 C in the central city of Daejeon on Wednesday and 36 C in both Seoul and the southeastern city of Daegu, the agency said. (Yonhap)

The US and Chinese embassies in South Korea expressed condolences Tuesday to the victims of last week's downpours that left at least 19 people dead and nine missing. "The US Embassy in Seoul offers our sincere condolences to the people of the Republic of Korea for the tragic loss of life and extensive damage caused by recent flooding and landslides," the US Embassy wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. "We sincerely hope for the safety of everyone impacted and a swift recovery for the communities still facing this tragedy," it added. Late Monday, Chinese Ambassador to South Korea Dai Bing also extended his condolences to the victims, offering "heartfelt sympathies" to the bereaved families and the injured victims.
