Cap-Saint-Jacques beach: Police may resume search for person possibly lost in water
Montreal police (SPVM) says it may resume its search for a possible missing person at Cap-Saint-Jacques beach in the Pierrefonds-Roxboro borough.
Officers received a 911 call Tuesday at 6:40 p.m. about a person who was potentially in distress in the water.
The beach was completely cleared to make way for an operation, including searches on the ground and water, but officers did not find any signs of a body or a person in need of help.
'We're still not sure if it's true,' said Julien Lévesque, a spokesperson with Montreal police, adding the force is still determining whether or not to continue its investigation.
This comes after a man died Monday in a suspected drowning at Verdun Beach.
On June 7, Montreal police also recovered the body of a 20-year-old man who had drowned there.
So far this year, there have been 25 drownings in Quebec, compared to last year's 24.
There was a total of 60 drownings in the province in 2024, down from 85 in 2023.

An Edmonton high school teacher facing charges of child sexual exploitation is believed to have fled the country, police said Wednesday. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Jimmy Buena, 47, for making, accessing, possessing, and transmitting child pornography. Buena had allegedly uploaded child sexual abuse materials using Facebook. ALERT said it is sharing details of the case due to Buena's position of trust and authority as a teacher. Buena's charges are related to online offences and it is unknown if any of his students were potentially impacted, investigators said.

Woman, 70, accused of refusing to pull over for police blows 3x over legal alcohol limit: BPS
A 70-year-old woman accused of refusing to stop for police while driving at a slow speed in Barrie is facing an impaired driving charge. Police say they were alerted to a possible drunk driver Tuesday evening who had just left a shopping mall on Bayfield Street and narrowly collided with another vehicle. An officer located the woman's car travelling on Livingstone Street East at St. Vincent Street a short time later, but say she wouldn't pull over. The officer then activated the lights and sirens on the cruiser to try to persuade the driver, but police say the vehicle continued on at a slow speed down the road. At Marjoy Avenue, the officer positioned the cruiser in front of the woman's car, ultimately forcing her to stop. Police say the accused showed obvious signs of impairment and was arrested at the scene. She was taken to the police station for further testing, where she was reportedly determined to be nearly three times over the legal alcohol limit. She was later released from custody with a future court date to answer to the charge. Additionally, her driver's licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Street closed in downtown Fort St. John as police investigate homicide
An area of downtown Fort St. John, B.C., will be closed "for a significant amount of time" after a person was found dead there on Tuesday night, police say. Fort St. John RCMP say they responded to a report of an assault in the 9900-block of 99 Avenue at around 6:42 p.m. Tuesday. Officers found one person unresponsive who, despite life-saving measures, was pronounced dead. Police say the Fort St. John RCMP Serious Crime Unit has assumed conducted of the investigation, with support from the North District Major Crime Unit. They say they are treating the case as a homicide. "The area surrounding the scene will be cordoned off for a significant amount of time while police work to gather evidence," Mounties said in a statement Wednesday.
