Edmonton teacher facing child pornography charges believed to have left the country

CBC6 hours ago

An Edmonton high school teacher facing charges of child sexual exploitation is believed to have fled the country, police said Wednesday.
A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Jimmy Buena, 47, for making, accessing, possessing, and transmitting child pornography.
In a statement, officials with the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams said Buena worked as a teacher at St. Oscar Romero Catholic High School in west Edmonton.
Officials with ALERT's child exploitation unit said officers attempted to arrest Buena at the school on Tuesday, but that he could not be found.
Investigators now believe he has left Canada and are seeking more information on the case. An ALERT spokesperson said it's believed that Buena left for the Philippines.
Officials said their investigation into Buena's online activities began last week when they were provided a tip by the RCMP's National Child Exploitation Crime Centre.
Buena had allegedly uploaded child sexual abuse materials using Facebook.
ALERT said it is sharing details of the case due to Buena's position of trust and authority as a teacher.
Buena's charges are related to online offences and it is unknown if any of his students were potentially impacted, investigators said.

SIU investigating after man holding knife shot by police at Brampton apartment

A man was shot by police on the sixth floor of a Brampton apartment building and taken to hospital with serious injuries. CP24's Arda Zakarian reports. Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a 35-year-old man who was holding a knife was shot and seriously injured by police at a Brampton apartment building following a call about a family dispute. Peel police said they were called to a sixth-floor unit in the area of Malta Avenue and Ray Lawson Boulevard at around 9:50 a.m. 'On arrival, officers spoke with the family members involved, and when they tried to make contact with the individual, the subject that was shot, he did produce an edged weapon and was subsequently shot by police,' Const. Tyler Bell-Morena told reporters at the scene. Const. Tyler Bell-Morena Const. The man was stabilized at the scene before being transported to a trauma centre in Toronto, where he is now in stable condition and expected to recover, Bell-Morena said. In a statement Wednesday afternoon, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) confirmed they are now probing the shooting. SIU Spokesperson Kristy Denette said an officer fired a single shot at the 35-year-old man, who was holding a knife in his hand, and he was struck in the abdomen. 'I can tell you one officer discharged (their weapon), so that would mean one subject official will be designated, and likely the other officer would be designated as a witness officer,' Denette said. She confirmed that two family members were with the man at the apartment when officers arrived, and that one of them placed the call to police. 'An individual, the family member, called police just concerned about her family member and the way he was acting,' Denette said. 'As far as any specifics that may have been occurring prior to police arrival, that would be something that Peel Regional Police would be looking at in a parallel investigation.' Preliminary information indicates that the man has some mental health issues, Denette said. Bell-Morena said officers had been called to the apartment before, but it was not clear if those calls were in relation to the man who was shot. He said officers arrived at the scene very quickly after the call was received and it was not clear whether they had been advised of the man's mental health problems, or whether crisis workers had also been dispatched. Denette said CCTV footage from the building, as well as footage from body-worn cameras will be part of the investigation. No officers were injured and police said the incident was quickly 'contained.' Multiple police vehicles were visible outside the residential building Wednesday. Peel police are advising people to avoid the area for the time being as there is a large police presence for the investigation. The SIU is an arm's length provincial agency called in to investigate anytime police are involved in a death or serious injury.

Ex-MMA fighter avoids jail time after crashing vehicle into Langley RCMP detachment

Abbotsford ex-MMA fighter Kultar Singh Gill is due to be sentenced in a 2023 crash that involved a vehicle being crashed into an RCMP building in Langley. Loading the player instance is taking more time than usual Loading the player instance is taking more time than usual A former mixed martial arts fighter from Abbotsford has received a conditional sentence after crashing a vehicle into an RCMP community policing centre in Langley nearly two years ago. Kultar Singh Gill, known in the MMA world as 'Black Mamba,' pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm. He was handed a conditional sentence of two years less a day, to be served in the community. The crash happened on the evening of Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023. Video posted to social media shows a vehicle speeding along Fraser Highway in Langley's Aldergrove neighbourhood, crossing a concrete median. A woman's legs appear to be hanging from the vehicle before it crashes into the Aldergrove community policing centre. According to an agreed statement of facts, Gill had consumed alcohol and cocaine in the hours leading up to the incident. He forced his way into the driver's seat, causing the woman's legs to dangle from the vehicle. The court heard he drove for four kilometres before crashing. The woman sustained extensive injuries to her legs. Gill fled the scene on foot and was arrested nearby. He spent 123 days in pre-trial custody before being released on bail. He was originally facing additional charges, including aggravated assault and two counts of failing to stop. Those charges were stayed. Court records show the case was classified as a 'K' file by the B.C. Prosecution Service — a designation used when the accused and victim have had a close, personal or intimate relationship. Gill previously ran a martial arts academy in Abbotsford. Under the terms of his sentence, he will remain under house arrest for six months, with exceptions for work and medical appointments. After that, he will be subject to a nightly curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. He was also given a one-year driving ban.

Illegal truck terminal in Halton Hills fined, prohibited from operating on property

An illegal truck depot on Winston Churchill Boulevard in Halton Hills has been fined, and prohibited from using the property on which it was operating and ordered to restore it. One Value Limited along with two of its directors were recently convicted of one zoning charge (illegal use) and three site alteration charges: two for failing to obtain a site alteration permit and one for failing to comply with a site alteration order. Further, the court has issued a prohibition order under the Provincial Offences Act, which prohibits an individual or entity from engaging in certain activities related to the offence they were convicted of. '(This order) is typically issued to prevent further harm, protect the public, or ensure compliance with provincial regulations. In the case of an illegal site alteration, it can also require restoration of the property,' the town said in a June 25 news release. 'Our valued farmland must not be destroyed by illegal truck terminals,' Mayor Ann Lawlor added. Halton Hills says it has been vigilant in enforcing By-law 2010-0050, noting that truck depots can house hundreds of illegally parked trucks. When in use, these vehicles 'add to traffic congestion, negatively impact farmland and threaten safety given the size and mobility of these 40-foot tractor trailers,' it said. The Town of Halton Hills, which has a population of about 64,000, noted that it has a zoning by-law in place that prohibits storing or parking commercial motor vehicles on residential and agricultural properties, most of which are along Steeles Avenue. 'We currently have over 50 properties in Halton Hills with illegal land use violations including illegal truck depots,' Susie Spry, manager of enforcement services, said.
