on Wednesday extended till July third week the interim bail granted to Ashoka University professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad, who had been arrested for alleged objectionable social media posts during
Operation Sindoor
.
However, the court declined to relax the condition gagging him on issues relating to two FIRs against him that SIT is probing, saying, "We do not want him to run a parallel commentary on the issues under investigation".
The court asked SIT to confine its probe to these issues after Mahmudabad's lawyer feared that its ambit may be expanded. "Why do you have to go left and right... Where's the need to check the devices (of Mahmudabad)? Don't try to expand the scope of the two FIRs...
SIT is free to form its opinion, but do not deviate from the task," SC said and posted the hearing in July second week.

Appearing for Mahmudabad, senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Sidharth Luthra repeatedly pleaded with a partial working day bench of Justices Surya Kant and Dipankar Datta for relaxation of the 'gag order' while promising that the Oxford educated professor would not indulge in the kind of writing which attracted two FIRs and which the bench had called "dog whistling" during the last hearing.
Sibal repeated his request several times. "Mahmudabad will not write anything relating to the issues involved in the two FIRs. Let that condition be deleted from the May 21 order by which the petitioner was granted interim bail. He is a mature person and Oxford educated. This is my earnest request. He knows where he landed because of the writings. I am beseeching you to delete the condition as it does not look nice," he said.
He failed to persuade the bench, which said, "He needs to wait for some time. You (Sibal) remind us of this during the next hearing. The condition is confined to the contents of the FIRs. We do not want him to run a parallel commentary on the issues under investigation."
Haryana's additional advocate general told the court that the SIT, comprising three IPS officers - ADGP Mamta Singh, SP (Karnal) Ganga Ram Punia and SP (STF, Gurgaon) Vikrant Bhushan - has been constituted and the investigation was on track. SC asked the SIT to submit to it a copy of the probe report after filing it before the jurisdictional court.

Year after army schoolboy suicide, charge-sheet filed against principal, teacher
More than a year after a 16-year-old student of Army Public School in Delhi died by suicide, Delhi Police has filed a charge sheet against the school's former principal and class coordinator, alleging abetment to suicide. The charge sheet was submitted before judicial magistrate (first class) Ravi of Patiala House courts recently following a complaint by the student's father, an army havildar. The father alleged that his son was denied the admit card for the Class 10 board exams just two days before they began, causing the boy immense mental stress. The principal and teacher, he claimed, misbehaved with the student's mother and demanded ₹10,000 as fine for damaging school property — all of which allegedly drove the student to take his life. The incident took place on February 19 last year at the family's home in Shankar Vihar, southwest Delhi. The student, who had returned from school with his mother around noon, was found hanging in his room an hour later. A case was registered at Vasant Vihar police station and a five-member special investigation team (SIT) was formed. An internal army inquiry also began, while protests were held by the student's family and well-wishers seeking the principal's dismissal. According to the charge sheet, accessed by HT, statements from students, teachers, and the student's tuition teacher established that the boy had broken a classroom desk three days before his death and uploaded a video of it on Instagram. On February 19, the school called his mother and informed her about the disciplinary action. The charge sheet stated that several witnesses have confirmed that the student was told his admit card might be withheld — which, the boy believed, would ruin his academic year. His tuition teacher told police, 'He had improved a lot in studies… he was only sad about his admit card. I convinced him it couldn't be held back, but he was very tense.' A classmate echoed this, saying, 'He was worried the coordinator would refuse him the admit card and his year would go to waste.' The police concluded there was sufficient evidence to prosecute the principal and teacher under Indian Penal Code sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 34 (common intention). However, the two have not been arrested as the court is yet to take cognisance of the charge sheet, which is expected to take place on July 17. Both accused were served notices under CrPC Section 91 to produce relevant documents. In their statements, they denied having misbehaved with the student's mother or issuing any fine, claiming the student was only issued a disciplinary note and that the admit card was to be handed over once the father met the principal the following day. 'The principal clarified that as per CBSE policy, no one can withhold an admit card,' the charge sheet said, adding that during the meeting with the boy's mother, the term 'admit card' was not mentioned. When contacted, the school said the matter is with the police and declined comment. The coordinator also refused comment, saying the case was sub judice. ‘Saboot gang not happy with what India achieved': BJP's Sambit Patra slams Congress leaders for remarks post-Operation Sindoor
A day after it accused Congress communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh of putting terrorists and Members of Parliament in the same category, the BJP launched an attack on the party for allegedly bringing down the morale of the Indian armed forces and common citizens on multiple occasions. BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra, quoting news articles acknowledging the might of India's retaliation against Pakistan following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, accused the Congress of being a 'saboot gang' in cahoots with Pakistan. 'In this climate, it is painful that there are political parties and especially the Congress who, in the beginning, said they are standing with the nation and with the government but they did not actually stand by either for a single day. From day one, Rahul Gandhi, Jairam Ramesh and several of their leaders, including Robert Vadra and the entire Congress leadership, have raised questions regarding the Indian Army and its valour,' Patra alleged. 'This saboot gang is not happy at what India has been able to achieve (in Operation Sindoor)…just think about it: Jairam Ramesh, who is the right-hand man of the Gandhi family, makes a statement that terrorists are roaming around here, MPs are roaming around there (in foreign countries). In one breath, you have put terrorists and MPs in the same category?' he asked. 'Rahul Gandhi, why are you asking us for a report card or proof when your own friend…Shehbaz Sharif himself has provided it?' he also asked. All these statements, Patra alleged, were 'synchronised', with the Congress's senior leadership on the one hand saying that it stood by the government even as its other leaders gave statements questioning the necessity of war and India's decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty. 'Just think about it: Rahul Gandhi did not ask even once how many Pakistani airbases had been destroyed, how many terror camps were destroyed or how many terrorists were killed,' he alleged. 'The country knows that there are two camps in the Congress party — one which is supporting Pakistan and the other which consists of leaders who do want to raise their voice for the sake of the country but are not able to do so because of you…your Jai Hind Yatra, where it is asked how many Indian planes were downed, seems more like a Jai Pakistan Yatra,' he added. Taking on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's comments questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Operation Sindoor, Patra asked, 'She is asking whether PM Modi is everyone's husband? What kind of language and statement is this? I would just like to say that PM Modi is everyone's sewak and brother, there is no doubt.' 'What is also undoubtable is that all these Bangladeshi and Rohingya infiltrators entering India have been given shelter only by you,' he alleged.
