East Bengal edge Mohun Bagan 3-2 in thrilling CFL Kolkata Derby
In an end-to-end contest filled with drama, goals and cards, Bino George's East Bengal side rode on a fast start and a resilient finish to seal three crucial points in Group A.
Jesin TK (9′), Sayan Banerjee (45+6′) and David Lalhlansanga (69′) scored for the Red and Golds, while Leewan Castanha (55′) and Kiyan Nassiri (67′) found the net for the Deggie Cardozo side.
With this win, the Bino George-coached East Bengal climbed to eight points from five matches in Group A, while Mohun Bagan remained on 10 points from six outings.
East Bengal started with attacking intent and were rewarded when Jesin, captaining the side, tapped in after a neat build-up between Edmund and Banerjee.
The lead was doubled deep in first-half stoppage time (45+6') as Sayan turned scorer, calmly slotting the ball into an open net after skipping past the goalkeeper, capping a swift counter-attack.
Mohun Bagan regrouped after the break, and Castanha pulled one back converting from close range after Dippendu set him up with a header from a corner.
But just two minutes later, David headed home from Aman CK's pinpoint cross to give East Bengal a 3-2 lead –one they would hold on to despite late pressure.
The closing stages saw high drama.
Mohun Bagan missed a few chances, including an audacious volley from Suhail Bhat.
East Bengal, too, missed an opportunity to seal the win when David skied a sitter.
The match ended in fiery scenes as East Bengal's Aman CK was sent off after receiving a second yellow card in stoppage time.
Fans were seen celebrating the win in trademark fashion, waving flags and lighting their symbolic 'moshals" (torches) in the stands, adding to the electrifying atmosphere. PTI TAP KHS

Divya Deshmukh arrives to grand reception, credits win to her family
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Nagpur, Jul 30 (PTI) Grandmaster Divya Deshmukh arrived here on Wednesday to a reception befitting a champion, with the young achiever saying she was overwhelmed by the affection shown by the the people who had come to greet her at the airport. Divya, 19, arrived from Batumi, Georgia, where she defeated Indian stalwart Koneru Humpy in the Women's World Cup title showdown, to clinch the biggest title in her fledgling career. Divya overcame the 38-year-old Humpy in the tie-breaker after two classical games ended in draws. Divya had entered the tournament as an underdog aiming to achieve a GM-norm but returned home with the Grandmaster title, besides securing a spot in the Candidates and becoming richer by USD 50,000. 'I am feeling very happy that so many people have come to felicitate me, and chess is getting the recognition," said Divya, who flew from Batumi to Mumbai and then took a flight to her hometown Nagpur, accompanied by her mother. Divya received a grand reception in Nagpur, with her relatives and fans arriving much in advance to receive her. 'My parents have played the biggest role in my career. Without them I would not have reached here. Credit to my family, my parents, my sister, and my first coach, Rahul Joshi sir. He always wanted me to become the Grandmaster, and this is for him," said Divya, about Joshi, who passed away in 2020 at just 40 years of age. 'My mother and father had a bigger role to play but definitely my whole family, my sister Arya Deshmukh, my grandmother, grandfather…I don't think whatever I will say will be enough (for my parents)." Divya also reserved special praise for GM Abhijit Kunte, saying he was lucky for her. 'Abhijit sir is lucky for me. Wherever he has been with me, I have won the trophy," she said. Elaborating on her future plans, Divya said she would take a break and then compete in the Grand Swiss, to be held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan from September 2-16. Diksha all set for her favourite Major at AIG Womens Open
Agency: Porthcawl (Wales), Jul 30 (PTI) India's Diksha Dagar is set to make her sixth appearance in her favourite Major, the AIG Women's Open, when she tees up at the Royal Porthcawl this week. The two-time Ladies European Tour (LET) winner, who has been on the Tour full time since 2019, holds the record for the most top-10 finishes by an Indian on the Tour. She has 22 top-10s in 130 starts. Diksha also finished second at the Lalla Meryem Cup this year. This year, Diksha is the only Indian in the field on the AIG Women's Open. In five previous starts in the event, Diksha has made the cut only once, finishing T-21, the best ever by an Indian. Meanwhile, fresh off a sensational victory at last week's ISPS HANDA Women's Scottish Open, England's Lottie Woad will be the one to watch out for. The victory marked her second Ladies European Tour title, adding to her earlier triumph as an amateur at the KPMG Women's Irish Open. The 21-year-old will make her first Major start as a professional this week, returning to a familiar ground where she made headlines last year as an amateur with a T-10 finish. World womens chess champ Divya reaches Nagpur, credits family, coach for win
Agency: Nagpur, Jul 30 (PTI) Women's World Cup champion Divya Deshmukh on Wednesday credited her family and first coach Rahul Joshi for her stunning victory. Divya, native of Nagpur, reached the city in the night and was greeted by chess fans outside the airport. 'I am so happy to receive this affection," Divya said. 'It feels nice to see that such a crowd has gathered here to welcome me. My heart is very happy," he said. 'I want to credit my sister, the whole family, and my first coach, Rahul Joshi," she said. The 19-year-old player from Nagpur on Monday became the youngest to win the Women's World Cup as she outwitted the seasoned Koneru Humpy in the tie-breaker of an all-Indian final in Batumi, Georgia.
