Tamil Nadu government is planning to constitute Special Task Force to identify and deport illegal immigrants

The Tamil Nadu government is planning to set up a Special Task Force to deport Bangladeshis and Rohingyas (Myanmar nationals) staying without valid travel documents in the State. Detention camps may be established soon at select locations to detain the illegal immigrants while the process of their deportation is being initiated. The decision is part of a nationwide operation launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to identify and deport Bangladeshis and Rohingyas illegally staying in the country. The MHA wrote to the Chief Secretaries of all the States/the Union Territories, asking them to establish the Special Task Force in all districts under the supervision of the police to detect, identify, and deport the foreign nationals staying without valid travel documents. After Operation Sindoor, hundreds of such illegal immigrants were identified in different States and handed over to the Border Security Force. They were 'pushed back' to their respective countries. A majority of the illegal immigrants sent back had settled in Gujarat and the States along the India-Bangladesh border such as Assam, Tripura, and Meghalaya. 'We are in the process of setting up an STF and detention centres. Identifying illegal immigrants and taking action against them under the Foreigners Act and the Passports Act is an ongoing process in Tamil Nadu. Cases were registered against several persons and steps were taken to deport them in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs,' a top police officer told The Hindu on Wednesday. Policy decision Asked why the Tamil Nadu government had not constituted the STF or established detention centres even a month after the MHA issued the advisory, the officer said that since the matter was a policy decision and the management of special camps for foreign nationals being a subject of the Revenue Department, a proposal had been sent to the authorities concerned for taking a decision. In Tamil Nadu, 364 illegal immigrants have been arrested since 2022 and 202 of them have been taken into custody in 2025 alone. The concentration of illegal immigrants is more in Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Erode, and Chennai and its suburbs. It is suspected that a majority of them have acquired Aadhaar cards and other proof of address or identity based on fake documents. The illegal migrants are employed in the textile, construction, and hospitality industries in these districts, police sources said. The MHA asked the State law-enforcement agencies to verify the claims of suspected Bangladeshis/Rohingyas. If they claim Indian nationality and residence in some other State/Union Territory, the police or Revenue Department officials were advised to get the matter verified by the District Magistrates. The District Magistrates would ensure that an appropriate report was sent to the deporting State or Union Territory after proper verification within 30 days. During the period of 30 days, the suspected person shall be kept in the detention or holding centre. If no report was received within one month, the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer could take action to deport the suspected Bangladeshis/Rohingyas after capturing their biometrics, facial photographs, and demographic details on the Foreigners Identification Portal, the sources added.

Seven Bangladeshi nationals and Indian human trafficker arrested in Tripura: police

Seven Bangladeshi nationals were arrested in two incidents in Tripura for illegally staying in India, police said on Wednesday. An alleged Indian human trafficker who helped four of the Bangladeshis was also arrested along with them. In the first case, three Bangladeshi nationals including one minor were arrested at Kailashahar in Unakoti district late on Monday night. They were produced before a local court on Tuesday. The Irani police, based on secret information, raided a house at Kalerkandi and found the Bangladeshi family of three there. In the preliminary investigation, it was found that they had been staying in Gujarat and were about to go to Bangladesh again. 'We arrested and booked them under the Passport Act and the Foreigners Act. They planned to go to Bangladesh via Tripura. They came to India illegally and went to Gujarat, where they stayed for two and a half years,' said an officer from the Irani police station. In the second incident, four Bangladeshi nationals and an Indian man were arrested at Boxanagar in Sepahijala district. The arrested Bangladeshis claimed they had given Rs 7,500 each to the Indian man to help them cross the international border. While arrests of illegal immigrants have been rather common in Tripura, a series of arrests of Bangladeshi nationals who illegally crossed the India-Bangladesh border have been made in recent months, especially since the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government in Dhaka fell last year. As per the Tripura police, 816 Bangladeshi nationals, 79 Rohingya people and two Nigerians were arrested between January 1, 2024 and February 28, 2025. As many as 483 of these arrests were made after August 5, 2024, when the Hasina government fell. Tripura shares an 856-km-long border with Bangladesh, parts of which are still unfenced due to local disputes.

CM asks police to take action against Bangla infiltrators

Kendrapara: Asserting that Odisha government was committed to deporting Bangladesh nationals staying illegally in the State, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday asked the police and the district administration of Kendrapara to take strict action against such persons as they may pose a threat to national security. He said deportations would be made as per the law of the land. 'The local police need to work in coordination with Central agencies to tackle the tricky the issue of illegal immigration,' Majhi said. While reviewing the implementation of government programmes in the district, he directed the police to identify the unlawful settlers with the help of the administration and initiate steps for their deportation. 'All the infiltrators -- whether from Bangladesh or any other country -- will be dealt with sternly,' he said, adding that the State government is following a zero-tolerance policy towards foreigners settling down without valid documents as they are always a threat to India's security. Majhi, who also holds the Home portfolio, had informed the Assembly in March that 3,738 Bangladeshi infiltrators have been identified in the State. Kendrapara tops the list with 1,649 people, followed by 1,112 in Jagatsinghpur, 655 in Malkangiri, 199 in Bhadrak, 106 in Nabarangpur and 17 in Bhubaneswar. As many as 1,711 Bangladeshis from coastal Odisha were served 'Quit India' notice in 2005 in accordance with provisions of the Foreigners Act. However, the exercise to deport them was put on hold by the Centre amid allegations of wrongful identification of the suspected foreign nationals, an official said. However, 21 Bangladeshi nationals were deported to their country under Foreigners Act prior to 2005, the official said. Kendrapara's development issues were discussed as the Chief Minister took stock of administrative performance, infrastructure growth and social welfare initiatives. 'Kendrapara will become a launch pad for the State government's second-year development agenda,' Majhi said, while addressing officials and public representatives. The review meeting was attended by MLAs from the district and discussions were held on strengthening water resource infrastructure, accelerating industrial growth and expanding the district's renowned mangrove cover. Majhi asked the officials to focus on eco-tourism potential of Kendrapara and put efforts to attract more tourists to Bhitarkanika National Park and Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary while preserving ecological integrity. Also, the MLAs and other people's representatives drew the attention of the Chief Minister to the long-standing demand for setting up a medical college in Kendrapara and implementing the 'parikrama' (corridor) project around the Baladevjew Temple. Majhi appreciated the district's performance in the creation of Lakhpati Didis and the success of Subhadra Yojana. He also lauded the district's performance in grievance redressal, implementation of mid-day meal scheme and distribution of allowances. The Chief Minister asked the administration to prepare a comprehensive roadmap within a month to develop Kendrapara into a model district, with a special focus on industrial growth, tourism, renewable energy and uninterrupted drinking water and healthcare access. Earlier, Majhi participated in Tiranga Yatra from Mausi Maa Temple to the historic Shri Baladev Jew Temple. He also flagged off two outreach initiatives -- Krishi Rath (Agriculture Rath) and Revenue Rath.
