Researchers Ask How We Could Survive A Nuclear War, In Palmerston North

Residents living near cities would have to produce food to feed city populations in the event of a global catastrophe, like nuclear war or a massive volcanic eruption, a new study has found.
The team at Adapt Research, supporting independent charity Islands for the Future of Humanity, modelled how a city could feed its people after such a disaster, if global links to imports like fuel, food and also transport and telecommunications were disrupted.
Researchers used Palmerston North of Manawatū-Whanganui as a case study of a mid-sized, land-locked city of 91,000 people to model yields from agriculture with the food supply needed to feed the population.
Lead author, Dr Matt Boyd said they found 80 percent of the city's food supply needed could be met by growing food within a one kilometre radius of the city, and 20 percent of the supply could be topped up by urban agriculture.
"We established within Palmerston North, in this case, the amount of potential land where you might be able to grow food, like people's backyards and golf courses and parks and things, and what would be the optimal crops to grow that would produce the most protein and food energy per area of land, and therefore feed the most people," he said.
"What we found is that it's a surprisingly little amount of near urban land that would sort of top up to feed the city's population."
He said the Covid-19 pandemic inspired the need for the research, "because we all remember what happened to supply chains."
Freight and food security for global commodities like wheat were also threatened in the years that followed, when the Russia-Ukraine war began in February 2022.
Researchers modelled which crops would be most efficient to grow in an environment where imports were no longer possible, to maximise caloric and protein yields.
They found peas and potatoes would suit normal growing conditions, whereas sugar beet, spinach, wheat and carrots would be most efficient during a nuclear winter scenario.
Considering the country's reliance on imported fuel as our "Achille's heel," Boyd said agricultural machinery could still run, powered by biofuel that was produced by 9 percent of the entire city crop.
"During a global catastrophe that disrupts trade, fuel imports could cease, severely impacting the industrial food production and transportation systems that keep our supermarket shelves filled.
"To survive, New Zealanders will need to dramatically localise food production in and around our cities. This research explores how we might do that."
Boyd said modest investments into securing seed availability, integrated food security into the wider national security and building local food processing capacity could be the difference between survival and famine.

Kennedy Jr., a longtime vaccine critic, cancelled US$500 million (NZ$842 million) in government-funded research projects to create new mRNA vaccines against respiratory illnesses that might trigger another health emergency. That dismays infectious disease experts who note that mRNA allows faster production of shots than older vaccine-production methods, buying precious time if another pandemic were to emerge. Using older technology to target a pandemic flu strain would take 18 months to 'make enough vaccine to vaccinate only about one-fourth of the world", said Michael Osterholm of the University of Minnesota, an expert on pandemic preparation. But using mRNA technology 'could change that dramatically, such that by the end of the first year, we could vaccinate the world'. (Source: 1News) The Covid-19 vaccines aren't perfect Years of research show protection from Covid-19 vaccines — both the types made with mRNA and a type made with traditional technology — does wane over time. The vaccinations provide the strongest protection against severe infection and death, even if people still become infected. ADVERTISEMENT But that's a common feature with both the coronavirus and flu because both viruses continually mutate. That's the reason we're told to get a flu vaccine every year — using vaccines made with traditional methods, not mRNA. Today's Covid-19 vaccines made with mRNA by Pfizer and Moderna can be updated more quickly each year than traditional types, an advantage that now has multiple companies developing other vaccines using the technology. Traditional vaccines aren't the only use for mRNA Osterholm counts about 15 infectious disease vaccines that could benefit from mRNA technology, but that's not the only potential. Many disease therapies take aim at proteins, making mRNA a potential technique for developing new treatments. Researchers already are testing an mRNA-based therapeutic vaccine for pancreatic cancer. Genetic diseases are another target, such as an experimental inhaled therapy for cystic fibrosis.

The researcher behind a slow-release ketamine tablet, developed to treat people with treatment-resistant depression, has been named a finalist in the 2025 KiwiNet Research Commercialisation Awards. University of Otago Hazel Buckland chair in psychological medicine Prof Paul Glue is up for the BNZ Researcher Entrepreneur Award for his pioneering research. The awards honour those who bridge the gap between research and business, transforming scientific discoveries into real-world solutions that create lasting benefit for New Zealanders. "I'm absolutely blown away by this," Prof Glue said. "Since this project started, it's taken on a whole new life of its own." For nearly a decade, he has been working on the medication, which is now about to undergo Food and Drug Administration approval, with the aim of getting it on the market within the next three years. He said the new medication was working well for patients and almost everyone who took it during trials decided they wanted to stay on it. While he was delighted to be named a finalist in the awards, Prof Glue said the biggest reward was that it was changing people's lives. "The contrast between what their pattern of illness was like before, versus being on this drug and basically being well, has been striking — life-changing for them." Most people who have treatment-resistant depression are destined to be stuck at home, unable to work, continually dealing with relationship problems — a place far from a normal life, he said. "The stats show that about one in five women, and one in 10 men in New Zealand will have an episode of depression, and about a third of the patients won't respond to conventional treatments. "They're functionally impaired. It's a big population, and at the moment, we as a health system do not have an effective line of treatment for this big population." Doctors usually used the anaesthetic drug as an effective means of sedation and pain relief, but ketamine was also given to patients with treatment-resistant depression, via injection or nasal spray. Unfortunately, it had major side effects in this form, he said. "It can make patients feel very spaced out, very sleepy. They can't walk for about half an hour. "That's why you have to have it in a clinic. "It's quite a burden on resources for patients and the health system." However, Prof Glue's slow-release ketamine tablets were absorbed by the body over about 10 hours and had few side effects. Because of that, it reduced the risk of abuse by drug users. It meant the tablets could be picked up from a pharmacy on prescription, potentially making treatment a much cheaper and more convenient option, compared with weekly clinic visits for ketamine injections or nasal sprays, he said. KiwiNet chief executive Dr James Hutchinson said the finalists represented the "cutting edge of innovation", turning world-class science into high-value, high-growth ventures with real impact for New Zealand. "From pioneering medical treatments to clean tech, sustainable food production and space innovation, they show how science can tackle real-world challenges — growing our economy, boosting productivity, and doing good in our communities." An outbreak of the chikungunya virus in China has prompted authorities to take preventive measures from mosquito nets and clouds of disinfectant, threatening fines for people who fail to disperse standing water and even deploying drones to hunt down insect breeding grounds. More than 7000 cases of the disease have been reported as of today, focused largely on the manufacturing hub of Foshan near Hong Kong, which has reported only one case. Numbers of new cases appear to be dropping slowly, according to authorities. Chikungunya is spread by mosquitoes and causes fever and joint pain, similar to dengue fever, with the young, older people and those with pre-existing medical conditions most at risk. Chinese state television has shown workers spraying clouds of disinfectant around city streets, residential areas, construction sites and other areas where people may come into contact with virus-bearing mosquitos that are born in standing water. Workers sprayed some places before entering office buildings, a throwback to China's controversial hardline tactics used to battle the Covid-19 virus. ADVERTISEMENT People who do not empty bottles, flower pots or other outdoor receptacles can be subject to fines of up to 10,000 yuan (NZ$2348) and have their electricity cut off. The US has issued a travel advisory telling citizens not to visit China's Guangdong province, the location of Donguan and several other business hubs, along with countries such as Bolivia and island nations in the Indian Ocean. Brazil is among the other countries hit hard by the virus. Heavy rains and high temperatures have worsened the crisis in China, which is generally common in tropical areas but came on unusually strong this year. China has become adept at coercive measures that many nations consider over-the-top since the deadly 2003 SARS outbreak. This time, patients are being forced to stay in hospital in Foshan for a minimum of one week and authorities briefly enforced a two-week home quarantine, which was dropped since the disease cannot be transmitted between people. Reports also have emerged of attempts to stop the virus spread with fish that eat mosquito larvae and even larger mosquitos to eat the insects carrying the virus. Meetings have been held and protocols adopted at the national level in a sign of China's determination to eliminate the outbreak and avoid public and international criticism.
