Du Plessis has since defended his title against Israel Adesanya at UFC 305 in August 2024, and again in a rematch against Strickland at UFC 312 in February 2025.
Russian fighter Khamzat Chimaev, known for his wrestling skills, is 14-0 and is set to compete for a title for the first time. He is coming off a first-round submission victory over former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker, who only landed two strikes before being outwrestled in October 2024.

I'm taking DDP because of that."
Anatoly Pimentel writes: "I predict a submission win for Chimaev over Du Plessis in this UFC middleweight championship showdown because of the former's superior grappling skills, specifically the top-tier wrestling caliber that he has in his arsenal. One of the main reasons Chimaev remains undefeated is his unmatched wrestling skills, which overwhelm his opponents and cause them to crumble. The primary key for him is to start early and apply these wrestling skills against the defending champion."
